All Aeroplan Miles donated to the Air Canada Foundation until December 10, 2017 will be matched by Aeroplan up to 500,000 Aeroplan Miles.

MONTREAL, Dec. 7, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - This week is the Air Canada Foundation and Aeroplan Miles Matching Week in support of the Air Canada Foundation Hospital Transportation Program. This program redistributes the Aeroplan Miles donated by Air Canada customers to 15 pediatric hospitals across Canada by providing flights for sick children who need specialized health care not available in their community. Aeroplan will match all miles donated until this Sunday December 10, 2017 up to 500,000 Aeroplan Miles.

"We are grateful to Aeroplan members and to Aeroplan for their ongoing support of the Air Canada Foundation Hospital Transportation Program during this annual Aeroplan Mile Matching Week," said Priscille Leblanc, Chair of the Air Canada Foundation.  "Their ongoing generosity allows us to donate in average every year 10 million Aeroplan miles to 15 pediatric hospitals across Canada relieving families of the financial burden of unexpected expenses and allowing them to focus on the health and well-being of their sick child."

"We're overwhelmed by the generosity of our members.  Every mile donated makes an enormous impact to families and people in need across Canada.  We hope our members continue to support the incredible work that our partner the Air Canada Foundation is doing to support children who require medical care not available in their communities," said Anne-Josee Laquerre, Director, Social Purpose and Sustainability, Aeroplan.

The Aeroplan Mile Matching Week in support of the Air Canada Foundation Hospital Transportation Program is being held until this Sunday December 10, 2017. To donate your miles, please visit aircanada.com/Foundation and select the "Donate" button located on the top banner.

About the Air Canada Foundation
The Air Canada Foundation, a not-for-profit organization focused on the health and well-being of children and youth, was launched in 2012. It offers financial and in-kind support, through travel assistance, to Canadian registered charities. Core programs include the Air Canada Foundation Hospital Transportation Program, which donates Aeroplan Miles to pediatric hospitals across Canada, enabling children to access medical care unavailable locally, and the Volunteer Involvement Program, which recognizes the involvement of Air Canada employees in their local communities by providing airline tickets to registered charities in support of their fundraising activities. The Foundation also offers continued support to major health-related causes that benefit Canadians and actively participates in international humanitarian relief activity as the need arises. In collaboration with the airline, the Air Canada Foundation also participates directly in fundraising activities such as the Every Bit Counts program, which encourages customers to donate loose change on board flights or through airport collection containers. Organ donation in Ontario increased by 30% in 2016

Trillium Gift of Life Network is proud to announce a third consecutive record year for organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario. In 2016, deceased organ donation increased by 30 per cent, leading to more lives saved.

Last year (January 1 – December 31, 2016) 351 deceased organ donors and 256 living organ donors gave the gift of life to a record 1,302 transplant recipients. More families than ever before consented to organ donation, with a 40 per cent increase over 2015, marking a growing trend in families to choose donation for their loved one. Nearly 2,400 tissue donors enhanced the lives of thousands through the gift of eyes, bone, skin, and heart valves. In the past decade (2007 – 2016), tissue donation has increased by 161 per cent in Ontario.

Trillium Gift of Life Network has applied a number of internationally-accepted best practices over the past several years, leading to the increase in donation and transplantation. Highlights include:

  • implementing routine notification at 70 designated hospitals, requiring hospitals to refer all potential donation cases to Trillium Gift of Life Network;
  • appointing 58 donation physicians that work in-hospital to educate hospital staff about donation and facilitate implementation of donation policies;
  • providing ongoing training to organ and tissue donation coordinators who care for families throughout the donation process; and
  • increasing organ and tissue donor registration rates across Ontario communities.

"As we celebrate the successes of Ontario's donation and transplantation system let us remember the heroic donors and compassionate families who shared the gift of life," said Ronnie Gavsie, President and CEO of Trillium Gift of Life Network.

"Ontario remains committed to working with the Trillium Gift of Life Network to ensure that we increase the number of life-saving transplants and reduce wait times for patients requiring transplants. We have made great progress, and today more Ontarians are registered donors than ever before, but there is still more that we can do. We must continue to discuss the importance of organ donation in Ontario and encourage donors to discuss their wishes with their families and formally register at www.BeADonor.ca," said Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario's Minister of Health and Long Term Care.

In 2016, nearly 285,000 people joined the growing list of 3.7 million Ontarians who continue to offer hope to the 1,500 patients waiting for an organ transplant by registering their consent for donation. Currently, 30 per cent of eligible Ontarians have registered their decision to donate.

Trillium Gift of Life Network is a not-for-profit agency of the Government of Ontario responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating and supporting organ and tissue donation for transplantation across Ontario and improving the system so that more lives can be saved.

City: Whitchurch-Stouffville

What a great event for support of Diabetes and the JDRF. The walk was so unique you even got your own FITBIT! Thank you for the invite TELUS!

The Background

This was the 8th year of TELUS’ title sponsorship of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) signature, nationwide fundraising event, the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes. As you likely know, the walk raises money for JDRF to continue funding critical research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications. This research helps develop advanced treatments to improve the lives of people living with Type 1 Diabetes.

The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes is also a signature event in our TELUS Days of Giving initiative. In its 10th year, TELUS Days of Giving brings together 16,000 team members, retirees, family and friends across Canada and around the world to volunteer for local causes of their choice to make positive, heartfelt and lasting connections within the community. As a company that is dedicated to health and technology, the Walk to Cure Diabetes is a cause that’s especially close to our hearts.

The Challenge

The challenge, if you were keen to accept it, is to sign up for your local walk and encourage your friends, family and online community to join you. But that’s not all. We also want to provide you with a Fitbit, courtesy of TELUS, so you can prepare for the walk and track your progress.

The hashtags used were #actsofgood and #TELUSWalk hashtags and the @telus handle.

The Goal

The goal is simple –they wanted to get as many Canadians as possible walking for a cure and helping raise to awareness for the amazing work being done by the JDRF. They also encouraged people to donate to this very important cause.

We believe a cure will be found within our lifetime, but we must work together to be successful. Your help will bring us one step closer to finding a cure.

TOMS launches its fourth One for One® product, the TOMS Bag Collection, to address maternal health, in Canadian market on March 6

With every bag purchased, TOMS will help provide a safe birth for a mother and baby in need

Toronto, ON – TOMS, the company known for starting a global movement through its One for One® business model, has launched its fourth and newest product, the TOMS Bag Collection, addressing the issue of maternal health worldwide. With every TOMS bag purchased, TOMS will help provide a safe birth for a mother and baby in need. The announcement was made today by TOMS Founder Blake Mycoskie.

After years in the field, I recognized a need for advancements in maternal health,” said Mycoskie, “so we developed a program with our Giving Partners to identify two key ways TOMS can aid in safer birthing conditions. Being able to give in this way – one that helps save the lives of mothers and newborns – is incredibly special. The issue of maternal health is very close to my heart, as I just became a father this past December. I truly believe people around the world will be amazed at what these bags can do.”

The TOMS Bag Collection features three distinct bag lines including Artisan, Travel-inspired, and Campus and Tech, in canvas, leather and global prints ranging from $30-$328 CDN. TOMS bags will be available for fashionable, philanthropic Canadians at TOMS.ca and select retailers across the country starting on Friday, March 6.

The Artisan line is hand-crafted, hand-beaded and hand-sewn using special construction techniques that have been passed down from generations. The Travel Inspired line draws on TOMS’ employee’s experiences as world travellers, and are extremely lightweight, utilitarian, multi-functional in design and are built to wear-in beautifully with everyday and travel use. The Campus and Tech line is colourful and multi-textured and is designed to carry computers, iPads, tablets and more in style, with many of the offerings being unisex. Key silhouettes for this collection include the tote, baby bags, bucket and the hobo crossbody.

Funds from TOMS bag purchases will help provide safe births in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Haiti and India. This work will be done by a network of TOMS Giving Partners involved in maternal and child health programs, who will help provide training for skilled birth attendants, along with a safe birth kit that includes vital materials like soap, gloves, gauze, a cord clamp, surgical blade and a clean surface to help a woman safely give birth.

TOMS Tablet Sleeve in Jetset Black ($140). TOMS Canvas Drawstring in Reef Chili Chevron ($86)

TOMS Traveler Duffel in Saffrom Ikat ($164). TOMS Coastal Canvas Tote in Chili Ikat ($108)

TOMS Linen Woven Backpack ($108). TOMS Leather Canvas Backpack in Caravan Cognac ($274)

TOMS’ Giving Partners in this area include respected organizations such as United Nations Population Fund, BRAC and ayzh. In addition, TOMS has selected Every Mother Counts as its maternal health advocacy partner.

Infection is a leading cause of death among mothers and newborns worldwide, and by providing clean birth conditions and skilled birth attendants, nearly half a million lives can be saved each year. (Source: UNFPA and Every Newborn Action Plan, 2014). Each year, 40 million women around the world give birth without the help of a skilled birth attendant (Source: Millennium Development Goals Report, 2014), but with the training of skilled birth attendants and proper materials to help provide a safer delivery, women are up to 80 per cent less likely to develop an infection and nearly half of newborn deaths can be prevented (Source: UNFPA, 2015).

Of the potential impact the TOMS Bag Collection can have around the world, Mycoskie added, “While in the field, I’ve met mothers and entire families who have been affected by the physical and emotional repercussions of giving birth alone, or in unsafe environments. We feel it’s our responsibility to change this through the TOMS business model, and we’re so proud to be able to present the first One for One product that can actually help save lives.”

Since then, TOMS has given over 35 million pairs of new shoes around the world.

Realizing that One for One® could serve other global needs, TOMS launched TOMS Eyewear in 2011 to help restore sight to persons in need with every purchase of sunglasses and optical frames. Since then, TOMS has helped restore sight for over 300,000 people worldwide.

In 2014, TOMS Roasting Co. launched with the mission to provide clean water to developing communities with the purchase of premium coffee. Since its debut, TOMS Roasting Co. has provided over 67,000 weeks of safe water to communities in need in seven countries.

Hey everyone!

Every four years, talented Jewish athletes from all over the world meet in Israel for The Maccabiah  Games and display courage, determination, sportsmanship and most of all Jewish pride.

I am honored and excited to have qualified and have been chosen as team Canada Sprint and Hurdle Coach to represent our country at the 19th Maccabiah Games, July 2013. At the Maccabiah Games, “The Jewish Olympics” compete in over 40 different sports and celebrate our Jewish heritage and our love, support and connection to Israel. I will be part of a world delegation of more than 8,000 Jewish athletes. Our Canadian team will be composed of over 600 athletes, coaches, medical and support staff.  The Maccabiah is the 3rd largest sporting event in the world and is the most significant social tradition of the Jewish people and the Zionist Movement in recent generations.

Maccabi Canada is a volunteer based national registered amateur sports organization that strives to promote Jewish identity and a strong bond with Israel by using sport as a medium.  Through the promotion of athletic, cultural and educational programs, Maccabi Canada has provided a way for the athletes to connect with their roots. Even though I am not Jewish I am honored to be selected.

There is no feeling like the one an athlete experiences, playing to represent their country. The opportunity to coach at an international meet, and meet lifelong friends and experience growing from the fine athletes of today into the leaders of tomorrow.

The cost of going to the games is high and covers my airfare, accommodation, medical care, insurance, team uniform, and other expenses.

Please support my journey and help me realize my dream of proudly representing Canada by donating to Maccabi Canada in my honour.  Any amount will get me closer to my goal, your generosity is greatly appreciated.
