Canada’s favourite fruit is ripe for making delicious recipes
and beauty applicationsStarting 2016 off on the right fork is easy with delicious and nutritious Avocados From Mexico. A smooth and savory superfood, Avocados From Mexico make up 80 per cent of the avocados consumed in Canada, and offer a range of ways to be prepared, devoured and applied.

Often mistaken for a vegetable, avocados are in fact a fruit (they have a seed). Avocados From Mexico have all the right fats in all the right places. The good oil fats in avocados – monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat – aid the body in absorbing nutrients from other foods and help to lower cholesterol. Nicknamed "green gold"avocados contain nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients and are suitable for many diet restrictions and eating plans. Avocados have zero-cholesterol, and are gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

Using a specialized growing technique, with hand craft trees combined from the branches of the Patron avocado plant and the roots of the Criollo avocado plant in Mexico’s Michoacan region, Avocados From Mexico are grown year-round and are always in season.

Tasty in much more than guacamole, and suitable for enjoying during breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack-time (making it the most versatile food yet), avocados can be used in hundreds of recipes including Mac n’ Cheese avocado nuggetsavocado berry smoothies, ceviche stuffed avocados, Mexican avocado rainbow towers, avocado, kale and quinoa salad and avocado cheesecake, to name a few.

From L to R: Mexican avocado rainbow towers, avocado berry smoothie and ceviche stuffed avocado

Avocados are also a cost-effective staple for DIY beauty treatments. As an all-natural moisturizer that can rejuvenate and soften skin and hair, avocados contain four per cent of the daily value of vitamin E (an antioxidant that protects body tissue from damage caused by free radicals which are believed to play a role in aging). Avocados can be used to make hydrating face masksremedies for frizzy hair, dark circle and puffy eye correctors and are a natural salve for dry hands!

Prana Coconut Chips - Review

coconut-chips-bbq

Coconut chips?!?! Yes you read that right. If you know me well you are aware that I may have a slight chip addiction. Ever since I was little I would devour any and all chips put in front of me. So when I was offered the chance to try Prana's new coconut chips of course I said yes.  These make a great alternative to the high calorie, greasy potato chips that we all know. What is even better is that these coconut strips are the perfect choice for a quick gluten-free snack, GMO free, Kosher, Organic and Vegan. Also I love to support Canadian companies and these Organic Dry Roasted Coconut Chips are produced by Prana; a family owned Quebec company that offers a wholesome range of healthy snacks, nuts and dried fruit, as well as chia seeds. Since October Prana Organic Coconut Chips can be found at all major grocery chains, health food stores and supermarkets with healthy living aisles across Canada.

The chips that I tried came in four flavours Jive (Spicy Chilli), Hula (Sea salt and pepper), Charleston (BBQ) and Regular. They all each had their own unique hint of coconut among the flavours and my favourite was the sea salt and pepper. The Jive was ok but I personally am not huge on spice. After all I am from a small town in New Brunswick where the only spice my family used was pepper lol. BBQ was a close second to the sea salt for me and if you love coconut you will love the regular.

I highly recommend this for a healthier alternative to chips. And if you are looking for more info or want to visit the Prana page click HERE

Thanks Prana for the tasty treat!

Coco Joy - Enjoy the Holidays Without Sacrificing Those Classic Treats

eggnog

The holiday season tends to be filled with delicious food, family gatherings and endless indulgences. It can be easy to overindulge on tempting sweets, so this season try something new with a fun, healthy twist on the classics by using coconut oil, coconut water and milk water from Coco Joy, first all-natural portfolio of coconut products.

  • Coconut Oil: Deemed a superfood, coconut oil is the perfect substitute for butter, margarine or shortening and also (melted) in any recipe that calls for oil. Coconut oil is almost 90% saturated fat, but don’t let this scare you. The saturated fat in coconut oil is called lauric acid, a medium-chain saturated fatty acid that appears to have a more neutral effect on heart health when compared to longer-chain saturated fats found in meats and dairy products.
  • Coconut Water: Coconut water provides nutritional values while also being a more satisfying alternative to plain water. Because coconut water is rich in potassium and magnesium, and naturally loaded with electrolytes, it is a great alternative to unhealthy sports drinks as well. Compared to other coconut water brands, Coco Joy is fat and cholesterol-free and has fewer calories, less sodium, no added sugar and no preservatives.
  • Coconut Milk: For those with dietary restrictions, coconut milk is a delicious alternative to traditional milk. Coco Joy Coconut Milk contains no dairy, lactose, soy, gluten or casein and is vegan friendly, thus a perfect substitute ingredient in recipes and equally satisfying on its own.

Below is a round-up of delicious holiday treats using Coco Joy Coconut Oil, Coco Joy Coconut Water and Coco Joy Coconut Milk,--

Toronto's first modern Pierogarnia restaurant, The Saucy Pierogi is now open

saucyperogi

Dundas West restaurant now serving full dinner menu, share plates, premium vodkas, cocktails and craft beers

Toronto, ON - After dominating the Toronto food scene for over two years as a pop-up restaurant and festival favourite, The Saucy Pierogi (TSP) is now open on trendy Dundas St. West (1282 Dundas St. W.). The restaurant pairs creative Pierogi dishes with a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere.

“This menu is without a doubt Polish in its DNA but since we’re in Canada, we wanted to celebrate its ingredients in our dishes,” says Konrad Obara, owner. “I wanted to blend traditional Polish cooking techniques with “out-of-the-box” flavour combinations in a cool venue with good vibes.”

Meant to be shared, the dinner menu features pierogi stuffed with gourmet fillings like braised beef, pulled pork, jerk chicken, and classics like cheddar potato. Pierogi and all other menu items are made in house; including soups, stocks and schnitzel. The cocktail and beer menu features signature cocktails, founded on the classics as well as a rotating craft beer menu and both premium and rare vodkas.

TSP blends a standing cocktail bar and sit-down restaurant, serving through to late night, offering house creations inspired by traditional polish Pierogarnia. The lively atmosphere is suitable for a quick after-work snack or a top spot to end an evening on the Dundas and Ossington strip.

TSP’s 1000 sq. ft. interior seats 77, with 10 comfortable stools at the bar. Boasting floor-to-ceiling front windows that slide open for the summer, and wood finished accents under candle lit table tops; the venue draws a warmth and rustic balance to the contemporary design, which, displays Polish-street art and photography throughout.

TSP will also feature a retail section offering take home goods, including soups such as Cabbage and Bacon, or their vegan Potato and Leek, house-made sauces, grab and go dinners, cabbage rolls, and frozen pierogi dozens for home preparation.

The Saucy Pierogi is open from 6pm until Late, Tuesday through Saturday.

It is universally agreed that a balanced diet is the best way to meet nutritional requirements. All the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function at an optimal level can be found from natural sources. This cannot be disputed. The subject of nutritional supplements, however, brings more polarising views. For those with deficiencies, they are absolutely required to give their body the boost it needs. Others see them simply as a marketing gimmick, cashing in on the health conscious generation.

With so many contrasting views to wade through, it can be difficult to understand the possible benefits. Just what is the truth about supplementing?  Well, for starters, let's make a few things abundantly clear. Supplements are NOT to be used as a substitute for clean eating. Their makeup is simply not designed to replicate the micronutrients and essential dietary fibre of whole foods. But when consumed alongside a well-planned diet, there are health benefits to be found in supplements.

So, who are the kind of people that may find the most benefit from supplements?

  • Vegans, for example, may lack Vitamin B12 as this can not found from plant-based sources.
  • Pregnant women are advised to take folic acid and iron supplements as a means of increasing their daily intake.
  • Those with eating disorders or a lack of appetite may need to supplement their nutrient intake to remain healthy.
  • People whose bodies struggle to break down or absorb nutrients in food.
  • Bodybuilders and gym goers may need protein supplements for muscle growth and repair.

You should always seek medical advice if any of these issues affect you. Consult a dietician about how supplements may be helpful in maintaining good health. Speak to your doctor about introducing them into your regular diet.

So, you've decided that you'd like to give them a try. What next? Most reputable supermarkets and health stores stock a wide range in powder, liquid and tablet form. You can even find supplements online very easily. Remember always to read the label carefully. You want to look for products specifically designed to provide all the essential nutrients your body needs. The best supplements generally supply an even amount of your recommended daily allowance for all vitamins.

Some supplements contain many different kinds of multivitamins. You may instead choose to take a specific product depending on your needs. You can buy a variety of pills that are specifically targeted towards certain vitamins in which you may be lacking.

Be careful about taking in too much. If you normally have a good diet, you'll likely get a good variety of vitamins and minerals from your food alone. Supplements are designed to give your intake a boost and maybe make up for areas in which you are already lacking. Watch what you eat and adjust your consumption accordingly.  Food products like fortified cereals have added vitamins and minerals. Taking too many could be harmful. An overdose of iron, for example, could cause unpleasant side effects such as nausea and vomiting. Always consume supplements before their expiration date.

Uber

I absolutely love what uber is doing #uberhungerto check out below what they are doing to help hunger in Toronto.

At Uber, we want to do our bit to help - and help in a way that only Uber can. That's why we've partnered with local restaurant The Goods, along with food rescue organization Second Harvest, to bring meals to those in need on what we're calling #UberHUNGERTO day.

Here's how we kicked it off:
XvsTTC_FB%20copy

Pay it forward by popping open your Uber app between 11am-2pm today on Friday, September 25th, to order a meal through UberEATS. We'll match your order and will ensure someone in need receives lunch.

This is not a one day thing. Uber is committed to aid hunger relief by donating any extra UberEATS meals to local food banks daily.

Silk_Product_Image

My personal reason for trying the Silk #MeatlessMondayNight Challenge is this football season is because plant based foods keep you active during sports, fitness events and day to day living. There are many benefits of plant based foods but some of the most interesting benefits have been known to include:

1. Lowering your blood pressure

2. Helping with blood sugar levels

3. Lowering your risk of developing cancer

4. Lowering cholesterol

5. Linked to weight loss

And I think those are all good reasons to increase the amount of plant based foods in my diet and so should you. For my very first Silk Meatless Monday Night #MeatlessMondayNight I plan on making a smoothie. You can make your own Silk #MeatlessMondayNight recipe or make mine. Make sure to post your photo and recipe and hashtag #MeatlessMondayNight

Alicia Bell and Telus Present - Living Better With Samsung S6

I have such a busy schedule! Not only am I a personal trainer in busy downtown Toronto, Canada,  but I also work for a water company (GP8 Sportwater) and I am also an athlete who trains to compete in the Ontario Physique Association (OPA) bikini category.

My life is filled with fitness, nutrition, travelling and social interactions. Sometimes it is hard to keep track of not only my own goals and activities but also my clients and other business adventures. I have to keep a very tight schedule, so for me timing is everything.

Since getting the new Samsung S6 from Telus  I have been living better! I love to take pictures and video of my clients training, my own workouts, the food I eat and the day to day activities and events that I attend. I have found that the Samsung S6 really captures these moments. Its dynamic, ultra-responsive camera captures the true-to-life brilliance of any moment throughout my day. It also has a quick launch camera so that I can pull out my phone and quickly (under a second) launch the camera to take an in the moment photo.

20150601_125305

Another convenient feature for me is the quick unlock finger print option. Instead of keying in a password (which you can also do) you can use your very own finger print to quickly unlock your phone. It was very easy to set up and when I need to open my phone fast to read a message it only takes a quick second  to unlock from being secure.

Another one of my favourite features is that it has a super charger. What does this mean? It means that because I am always on the go I can plug the S6 in for just 10 minutes and get up to 4 hours of battery life!!!! When you take as much photos as I do and you are constantly travelling from one place to another and listening to music this is crucial. I don't have the time to leave my phone plugged in for hours at a time.

The apps that I have found useful on the Samsung for my busy and active lifestyle are:

20150601_130713

S- Health: This app you can personalize and sync your health data with your Samsung account. You can choose your personal units of measurements and receive notifications of events in the status bar. Within the app you can download extra things. I use the Workout Trainer (if I need a quick workout for myself), Recipes & Nutrition(for finding healthy recipes) and the Hydro Coach (for recording my water intake). There are so many useful apps to help with staying on track and these three are just a few. You can completely personalize the S Health and the apps that you use within it for whatever your goals are.

20150601_130727_HDR

20150601_130803_HDR

20150601_130952_HDR

The phone can also counts your daily step count and allows you to adjust your goals for the count. I have it at 10, 000 steps per day. The only downfall is that if you don't have the watch to go with the phone you have to have the phone in your hand or in your pocket for it to keep track.

The sleep tracker is also key. As an athlete and trainer I cannot express how important sleep can be. If you don't get enough sleep your body will be high in cortisol. A stress released hormone that can trigger your body to store fat. Keeping track of your sleep will help you with your fitness goals.

Another awesome feature with the phone is that it actually has a heart rate sensor that allows you to instantly measure your heart rate and record it. This is great when training because it allows you to check if you are working in the right zone for your goals when you are doing an intense training or cardio session.

I also use the food recording within the S Health application. This can let you see what you are eating and how many calories are in it. Its great to achieve your goals. Whats also really cool is that if you haven't recorded anything for the day it will ask you if you feel like tracking your food? It will also remind you. Which is great if you are as busy as I am and often forget.

Check out the phone for yourself in this video from Samsung:
