Wonder Water: 6 Unexpected Infused Water Ideas for Gorgeous Skin

While most dermatologists and doctors preach the benefits of drinking more water, water gets boring. Perhaps you’ve done just about everything to make your plain glass of water more enjoyable. If you’re running out of ideas and are tempted to reach for a caffeinated beverage you’re not alone. We talked to the experts who gave us six fresh infused water recipes that’ll pack a punch of flavor and add health and beauty benefits to your H2O! If you’re new to infused water it’s easy. Chop up the ingredients, let them sit over night in your water pitcher and sip your way to healthy hydration inside and out.

  1. Mango Ginger

This combo might seem weird, but adding the health benefits of ginger and the antioxidant power of mangoes is a surprisingly tasty mix! “Mangoes contain so many vitamins that help boost your immune system. It has antioxidants that maintain youthful glowing skin and aid in the production of blood cells,” says Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. an anti-aging expert and long-time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team.  “Ginger is also helpful in fighting infection, has been linked to lower cholesterol levels, may reduce muscle aches, and helps digestion,” adds Dr. Calapai.

  1. Grapefruit Rosemary

Recently rosemary was found to be the main ingredient eaten by residents of an Italian village with one of the highest populations of people who live past 100! “Rosemary improves circulation and sends more blood to the brain which is linked to greater concentration and potentially reduces risk of Alzheimer’s,” says Dr. Calapai. Grapefruit is not only delicious but it’s a natural fat burner, boosts metabolism and cleanses your liver.

  1. Melon Mix

Cut up watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe chunks and throw into your water over night. “This melon variety tastes great and is amazing for your skin,” says Dr. Kally Papantoniou board certified dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. “Melons are immensely hydrating, meaning more hydration per cup of water. They are also chock-full of antioxidants that keep skin clear plus they contain vitamins that promote collagen production which helps skin cell turnover.”

  1. Citrus Mint Pick your favorite citrus fruits, cut up into slices and add some crushed mint.  “Adding mint to your water is not only extra refreshing but also improves digestive health and can speed up your metabolism,” says Dr. Calapai. “Mint actually contains salicylic acid, a potent acne fighter,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “It’s also well known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties which work to calm irritation both on your skin or internally,” she adds.
  2. Cucumber Lavender

“The reason so many spas use cucumber based treatments is because it contains many skin friendly minerals like magnesium, potassium and silicon,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “This mix is especially healthy,” says Dr. Calapai “Cucumbers are powerful detoxifiers, flushing out any waste in your system. Adding crushed lavender to the mix not only adds a beautiful aroma but can also help digestion as lavender contains polyphenols that reduce bad bacteria in your gut, making your system run smoother,” he explains.

  1. Pineapple Coconut Water
This one is almost cheating… almost. Get your favorite store bought raw coconut water and refrigerate over night with large chunks of pineapple. The coconut-pineapple flavor combo is delicious and reminiscent of a piña colada without all the sugar and calories. Although this is not pure H2O, coconut water contains electrolytes which plain water does not, which rehydrate you in record time. “Pineapple is yet another fruit that aids in collagen production,” says Papantoniou “This is not just great for beautiful skin, collagen also has a major role in bone health and tissue repair.”

Clearly there are benefits to keeping hydrated. Water does not have to be boring, it can be delicious. Drink up!

Dr. Spiezia - Co-founder and Formulator

Medical herbalist and skin expert at The Walsingham Natural Health Center in Turo, Italy, Dr. Mariano Spiezia has been considered the father of the organic beauty movement in Britain and was voted one of the Top 25, “Who’s who in natural beauty” in 2012 and 2013, 2015 and again in 2016. Dr. Spiezia graduated in Medicine and Surgery in Italy in the early 1980s, and has since worked on combining orthodox medicine with the extraordinary power of nature.

The Bio-lipophilic Matrix ®

For years Dr Spiezia has studied these connections with the idea of empowering the ingredients he uses with a higher frequency to gain a positive resonance on people’s skin and overall health. The result of this research is the Bio-lipophilic Matrix®, which is now at the core of each individual Inlight skincare product.

The Bio-lipophilic Matrix® consists of a specific blend of pure organic, cold-pressed oils selected for their high bio-chemical affinity to the lipidic human skin layer. Prior to production, they are energized by Dr. Spiezia’s bespoke techniques, which combine ancient traditions with modern science. These techniques heighten the oils’ vital force and help re-attune the skin to harmony, health and beauty. This enhanced blend of oils forms the heart of every Inlight product.

The core feature of Inlight’s formulations lies most importantly in the synergy between the individual ingredients. Other key factors are Dr. Spiezia’s medical expertise and Inlight’s carefully designed manual production, including its herbal oil, the base of all INLIGHT products, obtained by infusing the selected herbs in oils. The resultant herbal oil is extremely rich in beta-carotene, antioxidants, and pigments such as chlorophyll.

Entirely Plant Based, Inlight Skincare is suitable for vegetarians and Inlight oils are suitable for vegans. In addition, all Inlight products are microbiologically and nickel tested in the high tech labs of the Centre of Homeopathic Medicine in Naples (CeMON).

Inlight proudly displays the BUAV accreditation to demonstrate that none of our products or their ingredients has ever been tested on animals.

Environmentally Mindful Packaging

o   Inlight packaging is all recycled (glass jars up to 98% recycled), recyclable or biodegradable, and Inlight only uses vegetable-based inks. Even maize filler is GM free and will biodegrade over time.

Go Bananas Over Bananas

Inline image 1
It’s no surprise that bananas are a fruit favorite around the world, packed with nutrients and antioxidants, rich in fiber and low in fat, they are little powerhouses of good nutrition. In our never-ending quest to stay healthy without sacrificing our taste buds, bananas are a clear go-to and they are quite versatile. Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. a highly accredited New York City anti-aging and stem cell specialist, and long-time nutrition advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team explains, “Bananas are packed with health benefits throughout every stage of their lives, from green to fully ripe. As the banana ripens some of these health benefits change, making it a rare fruit that is enjoyable in many forms.”

Typically when we think of bananas we think of a lunch-box addition or a quick on-the-go snack, more so than a cooking staple? Here are 5 healthy ways to incorporate bananas into your meals and the health benefits of each.

When they’re green...

Fill Up on Mashed Plantains.
Green bananas are often referred to as plantains, they are not sweet like ripe bananas and they contain most of their fiber in the form of resistant starch. “Plantains are rich in starches that regulate appetite,” says Dr. Calapai. “Resistant starch may even slow stomach emptying, making you feel full longer and thus reducing the urge to eat sooner after a meal.”

Bonus! Mashed plantains could not be easier to whip up. Simply peel and cut the green plantains into chunks and boil in a full pot of water for 20-30 minutes or until tender, then mash with a fork until they achieve the consistency of mashed potatoes. Sautee garlic and onions in olive oil and add to the plantains along with salt and pepper and any other seasonings you enjoy. You can serve the dish with fish, chicken or meat, sprinkle with bacon bits or eat plain.

Satisfy your craving for something salty, crunchy with plantain chips.
“All bananas, green, ripe or in between are very low in calories, about 105 per fruit” explains Calapai “So you can get away with frying them in your choice of light, heart-healthy oil.” Plantain chips are a great snack or side dish and are also incredibly simple to whip up. Peel the plantain completely and cut off about half an inch on both ends, then thinly slice the rest of the plantain into chips. When the oil is piping hot fry your chips until golden and salt to taste. Voila!

When they’re semi-ripe...

Eat "Maduros" for younger, healthy skin.
"Maduro" (pronounced mah-doo-row) means "ripe" in Spanish and it’s what Latin Americans call this tasty plantain dish. You can eat plantains this way once they are very yellow and spotted, or have turned fully black. Simply peel, cut into thick diagonal slices and deep fry until golden brown in heart-healthy oil. Bonus! “Bananas at any stage of ripeness are very rich in Vitamin C, an antioxidant also known as called ascorbic acid,” says board certified dermatologist Dr. Kally Papantoniou. “Vitamin C assists in collagen production, which keeps your skin healthy and also blocks free-radical damage which is believed to potentially contribute to the aging process.”

When they’re ripe...

Manage blood sugar with a banana smoothie.
This one takes five minutes and a blender. Cut up two nice yellow, ready to eat bananas into chunks, add milk or yogurt of your preferred variety, some ice, and blend until thick! “Bananas have shown by studies to possibly regulate blood sugar as they are very moderate in the glycemic index, meaning they don’t cause dangerous spikes to your blood sugar levels,” says Dr. Calapai “Having a good banana smoothie for breakfast or as an afternoon snack, as opposed to high-sugar options make sure you are balanced throughout the day.”

Amp up the flavor!
If simply eating a banana starts to get boring amp up the flavor with a healthy pairing. Cut up your banana into chunks and add a healthy spoonful of peanut butter, sprinkle with some almonds or cinnamon, or mix with some dark chocolate chunks!

Bananas are a great, affordable way to add some goodness into your meal plan. Enjoy!

5 Tips to Help Keep Skin Safe in the Sun

Berlin, Germany, 23/8/16 - Over recent decades beauty standards have altered to place a larger importance on bronzed, sun-kissed skin. Changing leisure habits have made regular use of sunbeds acceptable, and a culturally agreed importance of boasting a year-round tan as a sign of health - and expendable wealth - mean that tanning is more pervasive than ever before.

Sporting a gorgeous glowing skin tone may make some among us feel better about our looks, but the potential health effects have been widely reported on. Specifically in Canada, a recent study from dermatological platform Derma.plus showed that the country has the 19th highest diagnoses annually of skin cancer worldwide. And at this time of year, it’s not just those who use artificial tanning methods who need to be careful to keep their skin protected.

Below are five simple ways to ensure you don’t over-expose your skin this summer, boosting your chances of keeping skin healthy.

1. Wear practical clothing...
A simple technique to avoid strong solar radiation is to wear sensible, skin-covering clothing, suitable for the environment around you. Loose fitting linens are very popular in summer, providing adequate ventilation as well as cover from the sun’s rays. Likewise, don’t underestimate the power a simple hat can have in protecting your face from the sun’s heat. At the beach or swimming pool don’t assume these garments need to come off before you get into the water; UV rays are more intense when refracted through liquid, so stay covered for as long as required.

  1. ...And adequate sun protection!
The most popular kind of sun protection is still the classic sunscreen. But make sure that you’re using the correct SPF for your skin type, as well as the right amount to actually protect the skin. To reach the SPF level on the bottle, adults should use at least 30-40ml sunscreen for the whole body. If you have sensitive skin, if its midsummer, of if you’re in a hotter country than your skin is ordinarily used to, be sure to raise your SPF factor accordingly, and always reapply several times throughout the day.
  2. Allow skin to acclimatise
If your skin is not used to hot weather or intense sunlight be careful about subjecting it to these factors too quickly. Allow it time to become accustomed to more intense solar levels to avoid any nasty sensations or shocks. Keep sunbathing to shorter periods of time in the first instances, and avoid being in the sun too long during it’s peak, between 10am-4pm in the northern hemisphere.
  3. Avoid sun beds
Straight-up great advice; sun beds should be avoided! It has been proven time and again that simulated solar radiation can drastically increase the risk of developing harmful diseases such as skin cancer. Such intense solar levels coupled with a lack of protection not only increase the risk of cancer, but also age the skin faster than usual. Some among us use sunbeds ahead of holidays in an attempt to acclimatise skin by creating a base layer of tan. However due to the intensity at which sunbeds work, this is not a sensible approach. A far better option is to follow the advice above and slowly acclimatise your skin whilst on location, timing exposure and ensuring skin is never exposed to levels which are too intense.
  4. Take special precautions with children
As far as the usage of sunscreen on children’s skin goes, debates rage on regarding the age at which they can safely start to have it applied. Some experts state that babies under 6 months of age should never have it applied, whilst others argue children should never use it under the age of two. Whichever argument you’re more inclined to believe, most experts and parents agree that sunscreen should never be the first and only line of defence for children. Opt instead for physical barriers such as clothing, hats or umbrellas.

THE COOLEST WAY TO SMOOTHER SKIN

FACE FREEZING VIA CRYOCURE FACIAL™

www.skintologyny.com

The thought of “freezing yourself” in the name of beauty might leave you cold, but new treatments that use extremely frigid temperatures are the hottest beauty trend.

From reducing wrinkles and boosting radiance to firming the skin, exposing the body to plummeting temperatures can have multiple benefits. “Therapies that use cold temperature can stimulate circulation,” says Yevgenya Freylikhman the director of Skintology Med-Spa in Manhattan.

Cryotherapy has been used as early as the seventeenth century.

Freeze Your Youth

The Cryocure Facial ™ is non-invasive and works by means of Cryotherapy or "freeze therapy". When the skin is rapidly cooled it causes a constriction of the microcirculation vessels that is quickly followed by a vasodilatation due to increased release of transmitter substances. This series of vasoconstrictions followed by vasodilatations is known as paradoxical vasomotricity. It works to stimulate the microcirculation, promoting better oxygenation of dermal cells. Paradoxical vasomotricity enhances the penetration and distribution of unique products containing more than 50 vitamins, minerals and amino acids to energize the skin and protect against free radicals. Collagen production is greatly enhanced.

By focusing exclusively on the face with local CryoWand, the surface of the face is enhanced immediately as the pores will appear much smaller and all inflammation and “puffiness” in the face is eliminated.

The CryoCure Facial™ is a Cryogenic treatment, in which a controlled beam of vaporized liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the skin of the face, scalp, and neck area. The CryoCure Facial™ is truly one of a kind. The cold nitrogen produces an instantaneous tightness in the skin, filling in fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen is activated to produce more cells, causing skin to become more elastic over repeated use. During the CryoCure Facial™, skin vessels and capillaries undergo severe vasoconstriction (to keep the core temperature from dropping), followed by vasodilation after the procedure. Toxins and other stored deposits are flushed out of the layers of the skin and blood perfusion is improved after several treatments.

Additionally, skin’s pore size is reduced, keeping toxins, dirt and grime out. The CryoCure Facial™ flushes away built up toxins in the skin and sooths inflammation, eliminating dreaded puffiness.

This technique can:

Reduce pore size

Decrease wrinkles and lines

Stimulate collagen production

Improve blood flow

Sooths eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis

Brightens dark spots

CryoCure Facial™  entails:

-Cleansing of skin and pores

-Exfoliating dead skin cells

-Extractions

-Stimulate collagen production with Cryotherapy for the full face

-Application of a mask to moisturize and soothe the skin

As Yevgenya Freylikhman points out, “The effects can be seen immediately and last for up to four months. And as nitrogen occurs naturally in the body you aren’t putting a foreign substance in to your system.”

FAQS

Can I catch a cold because of this procedure?

No. The immediate cold impact of the cryosession will raise the internal body temperature for a short period of time. The stimulation of the immune system can help decrease the severity and frequency of future colds.

How will I feel after the treatment?

During each session the body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make you feel good and energetic. The mood-enhancing effects from each session can last for days.
