SEIU Healthcare mourns the loss of Maureen Ambersley, nurse, due to COVID-19
RICHMOND HILL, ON, Jan. 6, 2021 /CNW/ - SEIU Healthcare, the union that represents over 60,000 frontline healthcare workers in Ontario, mourns the loss of our dear member Maureen Ambersley, a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), due to COVID-19 and extends our deepest sympathies to her family, as well as her union sisters and brothers who work at the Extendicare nursing home in Mississauga. Our union has reached out to Maureen's family to offer whatever support is needed at this difficult time.
Maureen passed away yesterday at the age of 57 and leaves behind her parents and two children. She was a dedicated union steward and an exemplary RPN for over 16 years.
STATEMENT FROM SEIU HEALTHCARE PRESIDENT, SHARLEEN STEWART:
"Maureen's family, friends and colleagues are in deep sorrow.
On behalf of our union family, I extend our deepest sympathies to Maureen's family, as well as her close friends and colleagues who we know loved her like a sister.
Maureen represented everything good about what it means to serve your community. For her last birthday she encouraged friends to make donations to SickKids Hospital Foundation. Maureen dedicated her working life to caring for our most vulnerable as a nurse in long-term care.
Maureen Ambersley is the fourth member of SEIU Healthcare to die during the pandemic. Christine Mandegarian, PSW, Arlene Reid, PSW, Sharon Roberts, PSW, and now Maureen Ambersley, RPN, were all women of colour serving on the frontline who died because they showed up to work in service of their community.
It must be said that the death of healthcare workers is preventable and the result of ongoing policy failures.
As Ontario families bury more workers and residents in long-term care, we reiterate our demand of the provincial government for a new action plan to get us through this out-of-control crisis."
SEIU Healthcare represents more than 60,000 healthcare and community service workers across Ontario. The union's members work in hospitals, homecare, nursing and retirement homes, and community services throughout the province. www.seiuhealthcare.ca

Healthcare Workers File Human Rights Complaint Against Nursing Home Chain and Provincial Government
RICHMOND HILL, ON, Jan. 6, 2021 /CNW/ - SEIU Healthcare, the union that represents over 60,000 frontline healthcare workers in Ontario, has filed an application with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario on behalf of workers at Responsive Group's Rykka Care Centres, pursuant to section 34(5) of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Healthcare workers are standing up to the private, for-profit nursing home operator for being discriminated against based on their gender and skin colour. SEIU Healthcare is standing shoulder to shoulder with exploited workers in this sector who are predominately of people of colour and overwhelmingly women.
The complaint is calling for better working conditions for the applicants, as well as orders to replace the management at the Rykka Care Centres.
The Crown and its Ministries of Health, Labour and Long-Term Care have also been named as Respondents to this application for their responsibility in regulating and overseeing the operation of long-term care homes in the province.
SEIU Healthcare has been calling on all levels of government to end the discriminatory and exploitative system of for-profit care across Canada that allows privileged and powerful men like Mike Harris to put their financial interests before our elderly moms and dads and the workers who care for them.
Our union has lost four members during the pandemic. All women. All women of colour.
Statement from Sharleen Stewart, president of SEIU Healthcare:
"Everyone knows that the working conditions in long-term care are abhorrent. We have a care economy in Ontario that exploits working women of colour, who are intentionally abused by their employers, as well as their government.
After the devastating year workers have had, SEIU Healthcare supports working women of colour who are standing up to say enough is enough. That means calling out violations of the Human Rights Code where and when they occur.
It's time we boldly change the conditions of work and care in our nursing home system once and for all."
SEIU Healthcare represents more than 60,000 healthcare and community service workers across Ontario. The union's members work in hospitals, homecare, nursing and retirement homes, and community services throughout the province. www.seiuhealthcare.ca

Putting Bradford on the big pharma map and giving the district a health check
06 January 2021 Prof Dinesh Saralaya recalls that when he was young, despite the family being Hindu, his mother sent him to a Catholic school in Madras (now known as Chennai), essentially, to broaden his horizons. The Consultant Respiratory Physician at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has certainly done that. He is director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) patient recruitment centre in Bradford.Well respected in his field, he has run clinical trials for 11 years and forged important links with big pharma - undoubtedly one of the reasons the Novavax Covid-19 Vaccine trial came to Bradford. Now he has another string to his bow, in the form of an honorary visiting professorship from the University of Bradford. But despite his many accomplishments in life, he remains fastidious and humble and focused on improving the health of people in the local area.“I have worked in Bradford for 19 years, we established the clinical trials unit here in 2009 and it has grown to become one of most reputable centres in the world. That’s why today, Bradford is one of only two cities in Yorkshire to host the Novavax Covid 19 Vaccine trial.“We need to be doing more research of this kind in communities. Bradford is a city of high economic deprivation but also has higher than the national average levels of various illnesses, such as asthma, COPD, diabetes and heart diseases. I can use my links to get this level of clinical research where it’s most needed.”Prof Saralaya grew up in Madras, graduating from its university and gaining a doctorate in Medicine, before coming to the UK in 1995. He achieved an University Gold Medal for having stood first in his doctorate exams in 1994. His father, Lakshmi Narayana, was also a doctor. Prof Saralaya became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1997 and after training in various parts of the country, came to Bradford in 2001 as a senior registrar and was appointed consultant at BTHFT in 2004.He has pioneered the use of Omalizumab in the treatment of severe allergic asthma and has been involved in ‘mist’ clinical trials involving the newer biologic treatment in severe asthma. In 2016, Dinesh was the leading investigator in the APEX 2 study, which was the largest study in the UK on the effectiveness of Omalizumab in the treatment of severe allergic asthma.Asked what his honorary professorship meant, he said: “I am delighted to be joining the Faculty of Life Sciences and will be working to forge links between colleague at Bradford and the life sciences industry but more importantly I will be using my previous track record of extensively being involved in research, alongside the skills provided by the University, to benefit the city of Bradford. I’m very excited about this opportunity.“As a consultant respiratory physician, I’m concerned about the health inequalities in this area. Bradford has an asthma rate which is above 10 per cent, whereas the national average is 8.5. It also has higher proportions of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and this is due to things like cigarette smoking, health education and so on. That is why it’s so important to do research. I have run asthma trials across the world. The clinical trials unit in Bradford is recognised as being in the top five severe asthma trials units in the UK and one of the best in the world.”Recently, it was announced the University of Bradford’s Digital Health Enterprise Zone is hosting one of the world’s first mass Covid-19 vaccine trials, run by US biotechnology company Novavax in conjunction with Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR), part of the Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. In 2015 and 2016 Dr Saralaya was awarded the best Principal Investigator Award for the UK for his delivery into the commercial respiratory research portfolio by NIHR. In 2014, Dr Saralaya was appointed Associate Director of Research at the BIHR and has grown the institute’s commercial research portfolio to over £1.25 million pounds annually. In 2019 he was awarded the joint NIHR/ Royal College of Physicians award for research in England for the year 2018-19Prof Saralaya now lives in Bingley with his wife Sudha with whom he has a son and cites a love of travel, politics and history among his passions. Note to editors: this is the second of three features on recent honorary professors at the University of Bradford who are involved in healthcare. The first (issued yesterday), was on Mel Pickup, CEO of BTHFT. The third (which will be issued tomorrow) is on Brendan Brown, CEO of Airedale NHS Trust. Episode 23- The Train It Right Life - Live In The Now!
Happy New Year Everyone! It's time to Live in the now! Thanks for your support, listening, reviewing, sharing and subscribing! It's time to make 2021 great!
The Year of the Quitter: Seven Things to Stop Doing in 2021 Instead of making new resolutions to add (and later discard) in the new year, Steve Cook says we should be focusing on what we want to subtract.
Knoxville, TN (January 2021)—In January, we typically look back over the previous 12 months and contemplate what we intend to do differently in the upcoming year. (Curiously, these resolutions are often the same ones we made and abandoned the year before!). With 2020 behind us—and none too soon, you’ll probably agree—Steve Cook hopes you’ll take a different approach this year.
Rather than adding to your already jam-packed to-do list, look for what you’ve been doing that isn’t serving you well. Then quit doing it.
“Many people found that 2020 stripped away their illusions and showed them the parts of their lives that aren’t working,” says Cook, author of Lifeonaire: An Uncommon Approach to Wealth, Success, and Prosperity (Lifeonaire Promotions, LLC, 2018, ISBN: 978-0-9863228-7-7, $14.99). “Wherever you’re suffering—finances, lifestyle, relationships, spirituality—if you dig down to the root you might find the problem is you’ve bought into a cultural narrative that tells you to hustle, grind, stay busy, and keep pursuing more.”
Not only does blind pursuit of “the American Dream” not lead to happiness, it actively detracts from it. Thus, it stands to reason that we need to slow down, take an honest look at our choices, and stop the proverbial madness.
“We are taught that quitters never win,” says Cook, a life and business coach, speaker, trainer, and author. “Well, sometimes they do!”
In Lifeonaire, Cook challenges us to consider what we really desire out of life. Through this fictional story, he shares how Americans blindly pursue financial wealth—thinking that money will reward them with what they want—and helps us to discover that our heart’s desire is to become more than just a Millionaire…what we really desire is to become a Lifeonaire.
That said, here are seven things you should quit doing in 2021:
QUIT using money as a metric to measure how successful you are. You should not stop doing smart things with your money, but do stop measuring your success on it. Chances are there are many people that have much more than you yet are still not happy. At all.
“One thing I have discovered in my years of coaching wealthy people is that they never seem to have enough,” says Cook. “They measure their success based off of how much they have and consequently they never have enough. This measure itself leads to discontentment.”
QUIT taking on debt. “Most every person that I talk to would like to eliminate all of their debt, however most of those people will go deeper into debt in the following year,” says Cook. “They will convince themselves that they need something enough that it is worth going into debt for.
“Marketers will do whatever they have to in order to get you to buy their products and services; they really don’t care that you want to be debt free,” he adds. “Make it a point to stop borrowing money this year. You will find that there are things that you can actually live without, and it is the first step toward becoming debt free.”
QUIT trying to keep up with the Joneses. It’s a game that you cannot win! Whenever you compare yourself to someone else, you will always find someone that has something bigger, better, prettier, or newer than what you have. It’s a very slippery slope to be on. Instead learn to be grateful for and content with what you have.
“Keeping up with the Joneses often means keeping up with a pretty picture that doesn’t represent what is going on behind closed doors,” notes Cook. “The Joneses oftentimes finance their way to that pretty picture. You don’t see the amount of work they do to maintain it, the stress they are hiding, and the disfunction in their relationships that comes along with the pretty picture.”
QUIT surrounding yourself with people who try too hard to impress you (and others). Most people are too busy worrying about their own lives to really care about you. That is not an indictment of people, instead it suggests that the same insecurities that you may have about how you look, what you have, or how successful you are, may be shared by many. Make this the year that you surround yourself with people who have come to a place of contentment—those who aren’t trying to impress anyone.
QUIT taking financial advice from people who are not better off than you. “It is amazing how often people take advice from others who are doing no better, if not worse than they themselves are,” says Cook. “I’ve seen people get marriage advice from divorced people, and business start-ups getting advice about how to do things from struggling businesses. The only advice you should get from those who are struggling is what NOT to do.”
QUIT working so many hours. Cook insists the most successful people work less, often make more, and love their life. Their business complements instead of competes with their personal life. They experience freedom and independence with their time, finances, and choices.
“Years of conditioning have us believing that hard work means working a lot,” he reflects. “The truth is, short periods of efficient hard work are much more productive than “overdrive” 60-hour work weeks. And if you have young children, long work hours and lots of business travel are especially dangerous. Now is when they need you in their lives. Work will be there later.”
QUIT putting off living life until someday when you have more wealth. Let’s face it, in 2020 many people realized how short life can be. It’s time for you to start experiencing life to the fullest. When you are trying to live life with money as the measure, you will never have enough. You will put off doing the things you could do right now in hopes that someday you have more available to enjoy life. Live it today.
“The Lifeonaire approach is to change the rules of the game of life,” concludes Cook. “Rather than playing life the way the world around us expects us to, we go against the grain and live life to the fullest. If you stop doing the things above, you will begin to have the space and time to do the things in life that really matter the most to you, which will also give you the time to grow and experience life to the fullest.”
