Overcome Overeating—During the Holidays and Throughout the Year

San Francisco, CA, December 1, 2020 — Candied sweet potatoes. Egg nog. Mac ‘n’ cheese. Stuffing. Pumpkin pie. Traditional holiday meals are resplendent with taste-of-home fare that’s easy to overeat. Based on original research by holistic nutrition researcher Deborah Kesten, M.P.H., and behavioral scientist Larry Scherwitz, Ph.D., Whole Person Integrative Eating offers in-depth insights into the reasons we overeat and gain weight, and a science-backed, step-by-step dietary lifestyle that can halt—even reverse—overeating and weight gain during the holidays—and throughout the year.

“Now is the time to ‘reset’ and rethink what and how we eat; to replace traditional dieting with a scientifically sound way of eating that lessens overeating and that leads naturally to weight loss, health, and healing,” says Kesten.

In their award-winning book, Whole Person Integrative Eating: A Breakthrough Dietary Lifestyle to Treat the Root Causes of Overeating, Overweight, and Obesity, authors Kesten and Scherwitz share a simple yet powerful premise: Identify the reasons you overeat (your overeating styles) and gain weight—with the illuminating self-assessment quiz—then overcome overeating and lose weight by replacing your overeating styles with the antidotes: the elements of the Whole Person Integrative Eating program.

By shedding light on the root causes of overeating, Kesten and Scherwitz present a program that empowers readers with a personalized plan, and in turn new hope and new choices to help them reduce overeating, lose weight and keep it off.

WPIE is not a diet that a person goes on … then off. It is a scientifically sound, dietary lifestyle designed to be practiced for a lifetime.

"If people follow the revolutionary program outlined in this game-changing, insightful book, it may be the most helpful step they can take toward losing weight and keeping it off," says bestselling author Kenneth Pelletier, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco.

The authors’ paradigm-shifting message is that food influences not only the physical dimensions of health, but also our emotional, spiritual and social well-being. Their dietary lifestyle can build bridges between the millions who struggle with overeating and weight issues and the medical community. And it can inspire us all to re-envision our relationships with food, eating and weight, so that each time we eat, we are nourished … for life.

DECN ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT AGREEMENT WITH RUSSIAN FEDERATION PARTNER FOR GENVIRO! AND GENVIRO! PRO COVID-19 TESTING PRODUCTS AS WELL AS ITS BLOOD GLUCOSE GENULTIMATE! PRODUCTS

COMPANY CONTINUES TO PURSUE GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENTS  DURING THE “HOME STRETCH” IN U.S. BASED FDA LEVEL TESTING

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / December 1, 2020 / Decision Diagnostics Corp. (OTCMKTS:DECN) www.decisiondiagnostics.co, a leading manufacturer and worldwide distributor of diabetic test strips engineered to operate on legacy glucose meters through its subsidiary Pharma Tech Solutions, Inc., today announced it has signed an agreement for the sale of  its Genviro! and Genviro! Pro Covid-19 testing products as well as several of its GenUltimate! blood glucose products through a large Moscow-based distribution company.  The agreement provides for exclusivity in the Russian Federation territory and the Ukraine, countries that have a combined population of approximately 280 million people. In a November 30th article in the Korea Times, https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/tech/2020/11...99908.html ,

it was reported that, “Russia’s virus test market is around $300 million.” In another article, https://www.koreabiomed.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=9593, it was reported that, “Demand for Korean test kits is rising in Russia because of their high accuracy.”

The GenUltimate! Precis products were brought to completion specifically for this Russian partner and present a special opportunity not often encountered. The company’s GenUltimate! Precis product will replace a similar product formerly manufactured by J&J Lifescan as a later version of the popular worldwide OneTouch Ultra/Select product line. This product is no longer available for sale in the Russian Federation, the largest customer territory for the OneTouch Select Plus product line.  Large markets devoid of competition do not often materialize.

The Russian Federation agreement comes on the heels of recently completed  distribution agreements for  GenViro! Covid-19 10.5 Second Saliva Swift Kits in Asia, including India, and more recently covering Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands and areas across the Caribbean and Central America. The company had previously announced it had signed agreements with distributors/dealers covering Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Lebanon. The Russian Federation announcement and flurry of distributor/dealer activity comes as the company enters into the “home stretch” in its GenViro! FDA testing submission efforts with a Pennsylvania-based FDA and CLIA certified testing lab.

NOT AVAILABLE IN THE UNITED STATES OR PUERTO RICO

“We had always recognized that Genviro! could find its footing internationally prior to the expected FDA authorization, and that’s how things  now appear to be playing out,” said CEO Keith Berman.  “We were also  confident that with all of the activity and interest surrounding Genviro!, we would see an uptick in interest in our GenUltimate! blood glucose products, and certainly the Russian Federation agreement is emblematic of that. We look forward to receiving continued interest in both of our product lines globally, especially as we conclude our FDA testing for Genviro! and prepare for submission of our EUA application within the next few weeks.”

According to an August report by BBC Research and reported in the same Korea Times news article referenced earlier, the global Covid-19 diagnostics market will be valued at $35 billion this year and will grow an average of 14.8 percent annually to reach $112 billion by 2027.

Mr. Berman continued, “The agreement with the Russian Federation will include our GenViro! Swift Kits for professional use as well as our GenViro! Kits for personal use.  For us, this is a first. The actual number of kit orders will be controlled by the distributor.   All of our GenUltimate! products are for personal use.” Berman went on to say, “The Korea Times article also reports that “Test kit makers also say vaccines will not eat up the demand for testing because proper diagnosis is a precondition for proper treatment or prevention.”

ABOUT DECISION DIAGNOSTICS CORP

Decision Diagnostics Corp. is the leading manufacturer and worldwide distributor of diabetic test strips engineered to operate on legacy glucose meters. DECN's products are designed to operate efficiently and less expensively on certain glucose meters already in use by almost 7.5 million diabetics worldwide. With newly inspired technology, and diabetic test strips already in the final stages of development, DECN products compete on a worldwide scale with legacy manufacturers currently selling to 71+ percent of a $15+ billion at-home testing market.

The company's new GenViro!™ products designed to test for Covid-19 are not yet available in the United States and hopefully should soon be available in Puerto Rico, but Emergency (EUA) Waivers are in process with the U.S. FDA with additional submissions to take place in the near future. The company has also signed an agreement with an FDA and CLIA certified US, Pennsylvania-based testing partner to complete testing per current FDA guidelines and continues to look forward to the FDA authorization of its EUAs.

The same data that will be produced by the company’s Pennsylvania testing partner will be used for submissions to the EU and Russian Federation. The company will also use data provided by its Korean R&D and contract manufacturing partner as part of their extensive product development schedule as well as the recently reported and better than anticipated XPRIZE testing results that have been submitted in advance of the newly extended December 5th deadline as yet a third validation of the testing methodology.

Beyond the testing, the company has received word from several of its large GenUltimate! blood glucose product distributors who are seeking to have Genviro! added to their Amazon product offerings upon FDA approval. Currently, Amazon only offers special licenses for point of care and professional use medical products, which would preclude the individual use GenViro! Kit from being available on Amazon, even after FDA approval is secured. Two of the company’s GenUltimate! product distributors have these “professional use” arrangements with Amazon, with a third distributor application in the works, although the company may determine that it is in its best interest to offer limited exclusivity to one distributor once FDA authorization is achieved.

The company continues to recruit and accept applications from prospective domestic and international distributors.  Inquiries can be directed to info@decisiondiagnostics.co.

Forward-Looking Statements:

This release contains the company's forward-looking statements which are based on management's current expectations and assumptions as of November 30, 2020, regarding the company's business and performance, its prospects, current factors, the economy, and other future conditions and forecasts of future events, circumstances, and results.

Success Stories Show that Low Dose Naltrexone Helps Many People with Autoimmune Diseases

Chicago, IL, November 30, 2020 — Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s, psoriasis, fibromyalgia and other autoimmune conditions affect nearly 23.5 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health.

In her thought-provoking book, The Power of Honest Medicine, patient advocate JuliaSchopick (with Don Schwartz) outlines a safe, inexpensive, often dramatically effective alternative to the costly, often-toxic treatments that doctors routinely prescribe for autoimmune and other diseases. It’s called Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN), and The Power of Honest Medicine is filled with compelling success stories from people all over the globe who have experienced relief from their symptoms thanks to LDN.

“There is lots of evidence that LDN is a groundbreaking treatment for autoimmune diseases, helping many patients with these conditions to achieve remission,” Julia writes. “In some cases, it can slow or stop the progression of their diseases. In many cases, patients experience a life-changing relief of symptoms.”

In spite of its documented benefits, the use of LDN to treat autoimmune conditions remains largely unknown among the medical community and the public. Julia is committed to changing that.

The Power of Honest Medicine contains contributions from 18 people from around the world (the U.S., the U.K. and Europe), all of whom are eager to spread the word about how LDN helped alleviate their symptoms of serious conditions—such as chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn’s, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and fibromyalgia—when the higher priced, often-toxic medications they had been taking didn’t work. Also, with many of these conditions, the drugs doctors prescribe can cost thousands of dollars a month, compared with LDN, which costs around a dollar a day.

Additionally, The Power of Honest Medicine contains a section dedicated to helping readers understand LDN and why it has the potential to positively impact those suffering from autoimmune disorders. Plus, the book includes a chapter with strategies for helping readers convince their doctors to prescribe LDN—information Julia has been asked for again and again by her readers and by those who have heard her speak.

Ever since her husband’s death from a brain tumor in 2005, Julia has dedicated her life to patient advocacy and to sharing information about potentially lifesaving alternative and off-label medical treatments. Her first book, Honest Medicine, offered valuable insights supported by patient testimonials regarding the use of four underutilized lifesaving treatments: Silverlon, for non-healing wounds; intravenous alpha lipoic acid, for liver disease; the Ketogenic Diet, for epilepsy; and Low Dose Naltrexone, for autoimmune diseases.

Julia’s husband survived 12 years beyond any doctor’s prognosis, and she attributes this to the innovative treatments she uncovered for him. It’s been her passion since then to prevent others from suffering unnecessarily and having to juggle the side effects of toxic medications with the debilitating symptoms of their health conditions.

“I believe that LDN would be the standard of care for autoimmune diseases if Big Pharma didn’t rule doctors’ prescribing decisions,” she adds.

Julia Schopick is the bestselling author of Honest Medicine and her follow-up book, The Power of Honest Medicine. She is a seasoned radio talk show guest who has appeared on over 200 shows and is often invited back. Julia’s goal is to empower patients to make the best health choices for themselves and their loved ones by teaching them about little-known but promising treatments their doctors may not know about. Julia’s articles have been featured in numerous publications, including American Medical News (AMA), Alternative & Complementary Therapies, the British Medical Journal and the Chicago Sun-Times

Healthcare Workers, These Mental Health Tune-Ups
Can Help You Weather COVID-19 Chaos

Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers face unprecedented levels of pandemic-related stress—and even PTSD. Here are a few tips and tactics to help you manage.

Nashville, TN (November 2020)—For many months now, doctors, nurses, paramedics, nursing home workers, and other healthcare professionals have been fighting an invisible enemy. And it’s taking a serious toll. While healthcare workers “keep on keeping on”—because that’s what healthcare workers always do—they’re staggering under the weight of anxiety, depression, fear, hopelessness…and, increasingly, PTSD.

But Mark Goulston, MD, and Diana Hendel, PharmD, have some reassuring news: Trauma healthcare workers aren’t destined to struggle forever.

“Instead of pushing down your emotions so you can power through, you can start dealing with them right now,” says Dr. Goulston, coauthor along with Dr. Hendel of Why Cope When You Can Heal?: How Healthcare Heroes of COVID-19 Can Recover from PTSD(Harper Horizon, December 2020, ISBN: 978-0-7852-4462-2, $17.99). “Not only does this give you relief in the short term, but you could prevent post-traumatic stress disorder from setting in down the road.”

History has shown us that frontline workers may suffer from PTSD following a deadly outbreak. It happened following the SARS and Ebola epidemics, and early researchshows it is happening with COVID-19 as well. But PTSD need not be inevitable, says coauthor Hendel, who became an expert of organizational trauma after leading a major medical center through a horrific workplace shooting over a decade ago.

“By learning to tap into your feelings now—the good, the bad, and the ugly—you can begin a healing journey that carries you through the pandemic and beyond,” says Dr. Hendel.

Why Cope When You Can Heal? shares therapeutic approaches that are currently used to effectively treat traumatic stress and PTSD and introduces powerful exercises to help you move through the trauma and further your healing. Read on for a few mental health tune-ups and other tips to help you manage COVID stress:

Try the 12 words exercise. This powerful tool helps patients tap into their feelings when they feel “stuck” due to trauma by gently visiting key words one at a time.

You can do the 12 words exercise on your own, in therapy, or as part of a group exercise. If doing it on your own, imagine a trusted friend or loved one gently and empathetically guiding you through the exercise. If you are in a group, the moderator can lead the exercise by speaking each word to the group, or to a single person in the group. You don’t have to cover all the words at once. You can focus on just one or two words, take a break, and start on a new word later.

STEP 1: Read the following words out loud: Anxious, Afraid, Overwhelmed, Fragile, Depressed, Frustrated, Angry, Ashamed, Alone, Lonely, Exhausted, Numb.
STEP 2: Pick one of these words that most captures what you’re feeling when you’re greatly stressed and then focus on it.
STEP 3: Imagine feeling this feeling at its worst.
STEP 4: What does this feeling make you want to impulsively do?
STEP 5: Imagine saying what you want to do to a person who loves you, and picture them smiling with love and compassion and saying back to you, “I understand.”
STEP 6: Imagine feeling their love taking some of the pain away.
STEP 7: Imagine them asking you, “What would be a better thing to do?”

Try some instant relaxation techniques during the workday. Yes, you have important work to do, but you can incorporate small routines and tools that help you get through the day (especially the rough ones). Keep a list of quick and simple ways you can relieve tension at work, and do one or two of the techniques each time you take a break. Take a 60-second stretching session. Close your eyes and breathe deeply for two minutes. Do a brief grounding exercise by noticing five things that you can see, smell, taste, touch, and hear.

Rediscover the simple pleasures around you. PTSD can make the world appear and feel dangerous, with threats lurking around every corner. That’s why it is important to stay immersed in the joys of life. Focusing on simple pleasures promotes healing and helps you enjoy your life in the process. For example:

  • Get lost in a good book. Don’t just read a few pages before bedtime. Really allow yourself to indulge. Set aside 30 minutes after work or in the morning before starting your day to escape into a captivating story.
  • Take a walk. Even if it is only five minutes long, commit to taking a walk every day. Chances are, by the time those five minutes are up, you will want to keep going.
  • Find a creative outlet. Think gardening, playing a musical instrument, putting together a puzzle, or even coloring in an adult coloring book.

Join a workplace support group for a regular hit of oxytocin. As a healthcare worker, you are part of a team. While you are experiencing the countless traumas of the pandemic, the teammates by your side are going through the same experiences, and, essentially, you are all traumatized together. Likewise, you can all go through the full recovery from that trauma together.

“When groups share similar suppressed and repressed thoughts and feelings during and following a trauma, they are immersed in the bonding hormone, oxytocin, which is associated with emotional connectedness and emotional safety,” says Dr. Goulston. “Check if your organization already has a formal support group. If not, consider forming your own peer support group. You can meet once or twice a week for sessions in person or even by video conference.”

Ignore the stigma and find a good therapist. Healthcare’s “just-move-on” culture makes many people reluctant to seek therapy, but it’s time to ask yourself, How well am I handling this on my own? If your answer is, Who am I kidding—I’m not handling this, it can make a huge difference.

“Find a good therapist with whom you can build rapport and trust, and stick to your sessions,” says Dr. Hendel. “Some appointments may feel easy while others may be excruciatingly painful. You might feel on top of the world one day and hopelessly helpless the next. Setbacks are a normal part of the process. What’s important is that you keep showing up.”

“There’s a long road ahead for healthcare workers fighting this pandemic,” says Dr. Goulston. “But with some good mental health practices, you’re better equipped to ride out the storm. Healing is possible, and the sooner you start working toward healing, the better you will feel—and the better equipped you will be to assist your patients.”

The Untold Story of Elvis Presley’s Heartbreaking Health Struggles

Traverse City, MI, November 30, 2020 — The world lost Elvis Presley on August 16, 1977, when he was just 42 years old. News reports painted him as bloated and unconscious on his bathroom floor, leaving devastated fans with a graphic, tarnished final image of their shiny idol from Tupelo. Toxicology reports confirmed that he was overloaded with prescription medications — just another cliché, a rock star who popped one too many pills.

Historian and author Sally Hoedel, however, doesn’t see Elvis as a cautionary tale of self-destruction. Instead, she sees a man who struggled, every day, to survive.

In her compelling, thought-provoking new release, Elvis: Destined to Die Young, Hoedel offers factual and scientific data, plus never-before-published information she gained by interviewing people who personally knew Elvis, to dive deep into his struggles with multiple chronic health conditions.

Hoedel examines Elvis Presley — devoted son, husband, father and friend — while plowing through the negative hype and legendary myths surrounding the man. Elvis’ downward spiral of health struggles is intertwined with his life story, and for the first time, it is revealed that he suffered from disease in nine of eleven bodily systems. Five of those disease processes, Hoedel finds, were present from birth. She expertly puts all of this into historical context, pointing out differences in medical treatments and protocols for the time.

Hoedel’s extensive research provides answers to lingering questions about his death and dispels the long-held theory that abuse of prescription drugs is what killed Elvis. Readers may be surprised to learn that, based on Elvis Presley’s family history and the genes he was dealt, nothing could have saved the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The result is a totally fresh, unique, humanizing approach to Elvis.

“I wrote this book because I genuinely believe this is a story that Elvis would want known,” Hoedel says. “He needed to be a strong American male while he was alive, and he hid his pain and his body’s weaknesses. Yet, he always knew he was just like everyone else: human. I believe he would be OK with everyone now understanding just how human he was. He struggled but he tried. My only hope for this labor of love is that it makes someone stop and think about Elvis just a little bit differently. He deserves it.”

Sally A. Hoedel, a lifelong Elvis fan and historian, has a journalism degree from Michigan State University and is co-owner of Character Development and Leadership, a curriculum business. She lives in Northern Michigan with her husband and their four daughters.

Researchers look to physical therapy to get arthritis patients moving

VANCOUVER, BC, Nov. 30, 2020 /CNW/ - Counseling by a physical therapist has the potential to improve physical activity in people with inflammatory arthritis, according to an Arthritis Research Canada study.

Researchers recruited people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and involved them in an 8-week physical activity intervention.

This included an in-person session with 20 minutes of group education and 30 minutes of individual counseling with a physical therapist, use of a Fitbit wristband paired with an app developed by the research team, and four bi-weekly phone calls (20-30 minutes) with a physical therapist. Physical therapists guided participants to set goals, develop an action plan, and identify barriers and solutions to physical activity.

"While the research doesn't prove this intervention will work for all people with inflammatory arthritis, we found a significant improvement in pain, which suggests it might have a positive effect on symptom management," said Dr. Linda Li, a Senior Scientist of Clinical Epidemiology at Arthritis Research Canada.

Supporting a physically active lifestyle is an important part of self-care for people living with arthritis. It can reduce complications like cardiovascular conditions and has a positive effect on pain, sleep quality and fatigue.

The results of this study provide a foundation for further development of the intervention for individuals with inflammatory arthritis.

Types of Exercises You Can Do When Going Through Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a type of medical precise health care that involves kinesiology, exercise recommendations, health education, mobilization, electrical, and physical agents to treat and reduce chronic pain caused by an injury initiated by accidents, trauma, or illnesses. If you have been experiencing pain and have loads of questions you need to ask, this is the perfect opportunity for you to visit an orthopedic clinic.

The most suitable remedy that your physiotherapist would recommend are exercises to aggravate the pain. PT exercise is part of your therapist's strategy to help regain your body's change and promote normal growth of muscles and tissues. If you have pain and abnormal functional mobility, your therapist may describe the following exercises.

Flexibility Exercises

Every patient who visits an orthopedic center has different forms of pain. Thus, every physiotherapy needs to consult with their patients and find out the exact cause of pain. They are keeping in mind that every condition has a different treatment and exercises.

Flexibility exercises aim to improve endurance, strength, and balance. Also, it stretches the muscles. The primary purpose of flexibility exercises is for one's body to stay pliable. It eliminates discomfort even when you are in a stationary place for a duration of time, like at your office place. Examples of flexibility exercises include body yoga, pilates, forward bend, stretches, cross-over, seat side straddle, among many others.

Range of Motion Exercises

Range of motion exercises involve activities that focus on improving movement with a particular joint. Therefore, ROM is the ability of the joints to move flexibly. A joint can move either 180 or 360 degrees.

The goniometer and inclinometer usually determine the amount of motion in the joints. The exercises recommended by your therapist may either be active, passive, or both. It helps to relax the muscles and lose tension. Operational activities involve the injured performing it, while passive exercises require a therapist to do it on behalf of the patient.

Functional Mobility Exercises

The exercises tend to improve the stability and mobility of the joints. The functionality helps us perform our daily activities; otherwise, we would remain useless in completing tasks or running errands. Ways to improve the whole body's function are to access it from the ground up through exercises to prevent injuries. Examples of these exercises are:

  • Foot stability-stationary runner
  • Ankle mobility standing plantar/dorsiflexion
  • Knee stability- lunge matrix
  • Lumbar spine stability

These are just examples, but there are many more others that your therapist might assist you in identifying with them.

Cardio-Respiratory Exercise

Most people believe that cardiovascular patients are not supposed to get involved in any exercise. These are all myths. Talk to any cardiologists, and they always encourage their patients to exercise. However, it is good to know and understand your cardiorespiratory endurance. Cardiorespiratory endurance is the level at which your heart, lungs, and muscles work collectively. Running and jumping exercises help your heart and lungs take in oxygen. Try also side to side hops and burpees.

Physical therapy exercises are good, but your therapist should include other forms of alternatives like electrical and physical agents, mobilization, among other treatments. Get direct access to a physical therapist and achieve your rehabilitation goals. Don't let that pain get in the way of your happy, healthy life.

CrossRoads of Southern NV Teams with Multiple Local Non-Profits to Visit Homeless in Las Vegas Tunnels

First Visit Occurred Weekend of July 24th, with Four Groups of Volunteers

July 30, 2021 – LAS VEGAS, NV – CrossRoads of Southern Nevada, NV’s top drug and alcohol addiction treatment center, recently organized and participated with the Freedom House, and Shine-a-Light Project, a morning of service to bring supplies and counseling to the many homeless living under the city of Las Vegas in the miles of flood tunnels.

CrossRoads CEO Dave Marlon participated with Paul Vautrinot, of Shine-a-Light, and Freedom House Sober Living.

Volunteers waded into the tunnel system, armed with backpacks full of granola bars, water bottles, Narcan, clean clothes, and canned foods. (Pictures available). They met with dozens of people who are living in the tunnels full time, many of them have been there for years.

“We were able to sit and talk and have good conversations with these people,” said Dave Marlon. “It’s important to remember they are still people and may be suffering from a mental illness. We want to help them. And we can help them with effective treatment.”

Marlon and his team of volunteers were able to convince one member of the homeless camp to take beds at CrossRoads and seek treatment – all paid for by Medicaid.

The group will be visiting the same tunnels, and others, every Saturday at 8 am PT through the summer.

OMA modernizes its governance structure, empowering members and improving decision-making

TORONTO, Nov. 30, 2020 /CNW/ - The Ontario Medical Association has approved the most significant governance changes in its 138-year history, a monumental step forward in strengthening this world-class medical organization.

These transformational changes will make the OMA's governance more skills-based, nimble and responsive, aligning it with best practices in industry and not-for-profit, member-driven organizations across Canada.

The OMA Governance Transformation changes were approved by the organization's governing Council at its meeting this weekend.

The new structure will empower OMA members through more direct connection to elected bodies and decision-making, with enhanced transparency into the OMA's structure and function. This will enable the OMA to represent members' priorities more effectively, including improved patient care and better support for doctors.

"Ontario's doctors deserve the most effective and modern organization." said OMA CEO Allan O'Dette. "These governance changes will enable the organization to be a more effective advocate for all its members."

The key changes in the governance structure include:

  • The Board of Directors will become smaller, more effective and skills-based consisting of 11 directors, including three non-physicians, reduced from 26 members
  • Replacing the current 250-member elected delegate Council will be a leaner General Assembly made up of:
    • an appointed Priority and Leadership Group
    • a General Assembly Steering Committee
    • appointed members of panels and working groups with clearly defined goals, objectives and work that help deliver on the overarching mandate
  • The General Assembly will provide more meaningful ways for members to get involved and effect change within the OMA:
    • skills-based working groups, made up of OMA members who are engaged to deliver on the General Assembly identified priorities
    • collaboration networks made up of OMA groups with common interests, specialities or locations
  • Members-at-large will now elect board directors,
  • Members will have a binding vote on choosing their presidents, rather than an advisory referendum. Members will also vote directly on Physician Services Agreements.

"These are historic changes," said Dr. Tim Nicholas, OMA Board Chair. "The new skills-based Board with non-physician directors is certainly going to broaden the efficacy of our governance system."

"This is the result of 1-1/2 years of hard work by our members, for our members, along with thousands of hours of staff support," said Dr. Samantha Hill, a cardiac surgeon and president of the OMA. "The 43,000 practicing and retired physicians and medical students representing 47 different specialities deserve the best medical association we can create.  These monumental and exciting changes will improve our collective ability to represent doctors, bring forward health system concerns and advocate for elements needed to better care for Ontario's patients.

About the OMA
