Academic Mediocrity of American Students Examined in Thought-Provoking Comparison of Educational Approaches

Brooklyn, NY, September 21, 2020 — East Asian students have always gained higher scores on the international comparative tests than American students. How can this be explained?

In A Mirror for Americans: What the East Asian Experience Tells Us about Teaching Students Who Excel, Dr. Cornelius Grove provides the explanation. Distilling 50 years of anthropological research into East Asian primary classrooms, Grove offers insights into East Asian teaching methods and, more significantly, into the societal values that shape East Asian teaching.

But A Mirror for Americans, about teaching, provides only half of the explanation. The other half is about East Asian families and parenting, revealed by Grove in his 2017 book, The Drive to Learn: What the East Asian Experience Tells Us about Raising Students Who Excel.

“The purpose of my books,” explains Grove, “is to convey to the general reader the research findings from East Asia, where societal values unlike ours shape child-rearing and primary school teaching. There’s an ‘Aha!’ moment: If only we could think differently about children and their classroom learning, we could raise the level of our own youngsters’ performance.”

A Mirror for Americans concerns itself with preschool through grade 5, comparing the culture of teaching in East Asia and the U.S. Among the research-generated facts revealed are these:

  • In preschool and grade 1, East Asian children are taught, and they practice, individual and group behaviors that promote their own learning and their teacher’s efficient lesson delivery.

  • Teachers design lessons based on the internal logic of the content they are teaching, not on factors such as a need to motivate, have fun learning or draw out pupil creativity. But they do strive to present content so that alltheir pupils – slower and more advanced – will benefit.
  • Whether a lesson is student-centered or teacher-centered doesn’t concern East Asians. Grove’s conclusion is that East Asian lessons are knowledge-centered, a key explanation for why East Asian students outperform their American peers on those international tests.

Explains Grove, “Attitudes toward learning brought from home, plus methods of teaching encountered at school, mold East Asian youngsters into superior students. These research-generated facts can serve as a mirror for Americans, enabling us to examine our approaches to children’s learning – and to the values that drive our approaches – from a fresh perspective.”

Author Cornelius N. Grove holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Johns Hopkins and a Doctor of Education from Columbia. An independent scholar, his “day job” since 1990 has been as the managing partner of the global business consultancy, Grovewell LLC.

Grove has had a decades-long fascination with the cultural factors that affect children’s ability to learn in school. At a 2005 conference in Singapore, he delivered a paper on the two instructional styles found around the world. In 2013 he wrote The Aptitude Myth: How an Ancient Belief Came to Undermine Children's Learning Today, a historical study of why most Americans believe that inborn ability determines school performance. For two recently published encyclopedias (2015 and 2017), he contributed entries on “pedagogy across cultures.” And now with A Mirror for Americans and The Drive to Learn, he is revealing the complementary roles that home and school potentially play in building young people’s mastery of school learning.

Don’t Lose Focus on Vision Health During COVID: Glaucoma Expert Shares His Tips for Healthy Eyes

New York, NY, September 21, 2020 — The COVID-19 pandemic may have changed the way we visit our doctors, but it shouldn’t prevent us from staying up-to-date with our usual health care appointments, including vision checkups.

“During the coronavirus pandemic, people should guard their eyes with glasses or face shields to protect their eyes from virus infection," says Dr. Daniel Laroche, Director of Glaucoma Services and President of Advanced Eyecare of New York. People also need to know, even though there are many concerns about COVID-19, common-sense precautions can significantly reduce the risk of infection, he says, adding: “Wash hands frequently, follow good contact lens hygiene and avoid rubbing or touching our mouth, nose and especially our eyes.'' Dr. Laroche is also affiliated with the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, Island Eye Surgical Center and New York University.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also changed the way people visit their doctors. For patients over 60, Dr. Laroche advises it's better to stay home and do telehealth over the phone or video consultation until the pandemic flattens. He also encourages people to wear face masks on visits and maintain social distancing, even if they are in a health clinic.

“Eyesight or human vision is one of the most important senses. As much as 80 percent of what we feel comes through our sense of sight. By protecting the eyes, people will reduce the chance of blindness and vision loss while also staying on top of any developing eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts. A healthy brain function requires a healthy vision. The brain is our most essential organ, and it allows us to control other organs. Normal and healthy vision contributes to improved learning and comprehension for a better quality of life,” says Dr. Laroche.

Dr. Laroche says there is another critical issue that COVID-19 has brought to the forefront and that is the issue of health care disparities among Black and Brown people. “Nationally, African American deaths from COVID-19 are nearly two times greater than would be expected based on their share of the population. In four states, the rate is three or more times greater. In 42 states, plus Washington, D.C., Hispanics make up a greater share of confirmed cases than their share of the population. In eight states it’s more than four times greater,” he says, adding: “In stark contrast, white deaths from COVID-19 are lower than their share of the population in 37 states.”

Dr. Laroche says there are several things that can be done to not only address but to help combat this issue:

1.  Increase the number of Black and Afro-Latino physicians worldwide.

2.  Implement universal health care.

3.  Increase wealth and education which produces better health.

4.  Provide a living income stipend for poor people to access food and reduce malnutrition.

5.  Eliminate racism to reduce stress.

6.  Identify white supremist organizations as terrorist groups.

7.  Recommend all corporations have people of color in the top management and leadership positions.

8.  Eliminate sole reliance on standardized testing as the criteria to be used at entry to magnet schools.

9.  Provide more funding to reduce homelessness and for mental health.

10. The government should also require medical school, research and hospital funding to diversify and benefit people of color.

Holistic, Science-Backed Program Helps Build a Healthier Relationship with Food, Eating and Weight

San Francisco, CA, Sept. 21, 2020 — Could a dietary lifestyle that nourishes us physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially be the answer to stemming America’s rising tide of overeating and obesity?

Original research points to yes, and in Whole Person Integrative Eating: A Breakthrough Dietary Lifestyle to Treat the Root Causes of Overeating, Overweight, and Obesity, nutrition researcher Deborah Kesten, M.P.H., and behavioral scientist Larry Scherwitz, Ph.D., offer documented proof that by nourishing ourselves multi-dimensionally each time we eat, we can develop deeper, healthier relationships with food and eating that leads to attaining and maintaining weight loss. The authors’ Whole Person Integrative Eating (WPIE) program is not a diet that a person goes on … then off. WPIE is a scientifically sound, dietary lifestyle designed to be practiced for a lifetime.

"If people follow the revolutionary program outlined in this game-changing, insightful book, it may be the most helpful step they can take toward losing weight and keeping it off," says bestselling author Kenneth Pelletier, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco.

Divided into three parts, Whole Person Integrative Eating begins by describing seven root causes of overeating: Emotional Eating, Food Fretting, Fast Foodism, Sensory Disregard, Task Snacking, Unappetizing Atmosphere and Solo Dining. A Self-Assessment Quiz follows, with 76 questions to help readers identify their unique food choices and eating behaviors that lead to overeating and weight gain. Part Two provides a step-by-step guide to WPIE antidotes for each overeating style. It also explains why the elements of WPIE work and how they can be incorporated into daily life. And Part Three offers over 30 recipes based on the three main criteria of WPIE: fresh, whole and "inverse,” meaning mostly plant-based foods with small or no servings of animal-based foods.

An excerpt from the Foreword of Whole Person Integrative Eating by New York Times best-selling author Dean Ornish, M.D., Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California:

“[The book] offers an evidence-based alternative to the conventional wisdom about attaining and maintaining weight loss. What’s groundbreaking about Kesten and Scherwitz’s research is twofold: They have created a scientifically sound, comprehensive, and integrative program for treating overeating, overweight, and obesity based on these principles. And in addition to what (food choices) and how(eating behaviors) we eat, they have identified seven statistically significant root reasons to explain why we overeat: what they call “new normal overeating styles” and eating behaviors that also have a profound influence on how much we eat and weigh.”

The authors’ paradigm-shifting message is that food influences not only the physical dimensions of health, but also our emotional, spiritual and social well-being. Their dietary lifestyle can build bridges between the millions who struggle with overeating and weight issues and the medical community. And it can inspire us all to re-envision our relationships with food, eating and weight, so that each time we eat, we are nourished … for life.

Connect Outside This Fall: It’s the Safe Place to Spend Time and It’s Good for You

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alexandria, Va. – Fall is nearly here, and you can boost your health and connect with nature, your friends and your family by getting outside and into green space.

“Due to the pandemic, we are gaining a fuller understanding of the importance of the outdoors – from our yard and parks to school yards and sports fields. They are essential to our well-being and to nature, itself,” said Kris Kiser, President of the TurfMutt Foundation, which directs the TurfMutt environmental education and stewardship program, and The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI).

TurfMutt has advocated the importance of managed landscapes and other green space as critical to human health and happiness for over a decade.

“We are reconnecting to the family yard in a way we haven’t seen for many years,” said Kiser. He noted that time spent in green space like your yard, is really good for you.

“Research shows that time spent outside reduces stress for adults and children alike,” said Kiser. With indoor gatherings limited in many areas and many people eager to see family and friends, the safest place to spend a fall evening catching up and socializing is your yard.

Reconnect with yourself and others. Unplug from your computer, television, and smartphone by getting outside. Disconnecting from electronics, to-do lists and the news cycle lets you re-connect to nature, family and friends.

Burn more calories. A brisk walk around the block or a few minutes of yard work can help you drop the extra “COVID 15” weight that many have added while sheltering at home during the pandemic. Exercising and exertion in cooler temperatures also burns more calories.

Get a happiness boost. Fall afternoons in the yard are great for soaking up sunshine and natural Vitamin D, which can improve your mood and support overall health.

Give your eyes a break. We spend a lot of time looking at screens – on our TVs, computers, tablets and smartphones. This can overstimulate our eyes and lead to nearsightedness. Just walking outside, you give your eyes an opportunity to relax and widen their focus, as they look at the ground in front of you and to the landscape around you.

Boost your energy. Spending time in nature and breathing fresh air increases energy levels in 90 percent of people, according to research.

Stimulate your brain. Fall yard work in cooler weather, such as digging in planting beds, mulching leaves, aerating soil and planting trees or shrubs is all good for your brain. Research shows people perform tasks better when temperatures are cooler. Go for a brisk walk around the neighborhood or do a few minutes of yard work.

Use local pharmacies to recruit BAME volunteers for groundbreaking Covid trial, says professorCall for BAME over-50s to take part in Covid treatment trial
18 September 2020
University of Bradford Visiting Honorary Professor Mahendra Patel is working with University of Oxford Primary Care Trials Unit to trial new treatments for COVID-19 in older people. Two antibiotics are being tested: azithromycin and doxycycline, to see whether early treatment can help over-50s recover quickly from Covid, without the need for hospital admission.Prof Patel will work on the PRINCIPLE trial as its National black, Asian and minority ethnic Community and Pharmacy Research Lead.Thousands of volunteers are still needed, especially amongst British Asian communities, who are often underrepresented in this type of research but can be at higher risk of developing a more serious Covid-19 illness.Professor Patel suggested chemists could be used to recruit BAME volunteers."There has to be a more concerted and tailored effort to reach out to black, Asian and minority ehnic communities more effectively in health research, particularly in the case of Covid-19, where we are seeing members of these communities unfortunately experiencing a greater risk of contracting the virus with higher adverse effects and even deaths.“South Asian communities have a different outlook to engaging with health research and studies, and this may the case be with black and other minority ethnic groups. How you reach out to the different communities is vital to ensure proper understanding and confidence. The more people volunteering [for] these studies, the greater the likelihood for an effective and safe means of tackling the virus.“Pharmacists play a valuable role in the community and in primary care and there is an opportunity here to use those channels more effectively in recruiting people from all backgrounds into this trial.“All participants are closely monitored at every stage and would be free to withdraw at any point should they choose to do so.”The trial is open to people aged over 50 with an underlying health condition or anyone over 65. Those with Covid-19 symptoms can be joined online, without needing face-to-face visits. Delivery of the trial and recruitment of participants is supported by the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Networks across more than 800 general practices.PRINCIPLE is one of the UK Government’s national priority platform trials on treatments for Covid-19, with over 850 participants already signed up. So far, recruiting people from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities has been a particular challenge.Lead Investigator Professor Chris Butler from University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, said: “Like other trials evaluating potential coronavirus treatments, recruiting participants into PRINCIPLE who are at most risk of developing serious illness is the best way to understand whether these treatments are going to be effective. Conventional patient recruitment strategies which rely on utilising established national and regional clinical networks often fail to reach those who are typically under-represented in health research.”Previously, Prof Patel has called for greater awareness of the risks of Covid, delivering, using the slogan: “We are our own vaccine. Social distance, wash hands, wear facemasks.”

Sunset Key, Key West, FL– Tiki Hut Livin (www.TikiHutLivin.com) balances fashion andfunction in a line of outdoor and sun-safe apparel. The Tiki Hat has been popular this summer at the Sunset Key, Key West location, and is expected to be the new “must have” item this fall. "The Tiki Hat" is a patent pending design that elegantly offers women protection from the sun, in a practical and chic way. The scarf doesn’t just block 98 % of UV rays with the two UPF 50+ scarfs, but it also meets the CDC requirements for a cloth face covering while out in public.

“Outdoor lovers want to protect themselves from sun exposure. Yet, when having to choosebetween style and safety, it seems that most people pick style. Our products create a new normal where people no longer have to choose” Says CEO Capobianco.

The Tiki Hat offers numerous styling options, to either cover up completely, partially, or wear as a fashion accessory. The scarves can be removed and easily swapped to coordinate with any outfit or event. She designed the hat with small magnets embedded into the brim of the hat, and sewn into the seam of the fabric, to protect while boating, beaching or driving in a convertible. “As soon as I saw ‘The Tiki Hat,’ I knew I had to have my own, and now I never go to the beach without it,” said Mazzone, a Florida Sunshine State resident. “All of Cheryl’s products not only have a fashionable flare, they have an important health aspect,” added Mazzone.

Tiki Hut Livin is an athleisure brand with a line of outdoor and ultraviolet protective apparel. They carry a wide range of hand- picked products for outdoor fun, to sun safe eyewear, and sports accessories.
