SmartCitti & WRLD3D launch 'SafeDistance' app as 47% of the UK workforce are anxious about returning to work post-lockdown

Social distancing app, ‘SafeDistance,’ seeks to eradicate workplace woes post-lockdown and protect employee health for the long term

Image

A study has found that almost half of the UK workforce (47%) are nervous to go back to work and be in close proximity with others, as the government continues to loosen lockdown restrictions.

WRLD3D and SMARTCITTI, the creators of the new SmartWorkplace social distancing app SafeDistance, surveyed 2,000 workers in the UK to gain valuable insight into what they are most concerned about as organisations start to reopen their doors.

The number one concern raised in the study is the level of sanitisation in workplaces and the longevity of newly implemented procedures, for example, will hygiene and safety standards slip over time?

Workers are also nervous of the possibility of picking up the infection from an asymptomatic colleague and expressed doubts over whether colleagues would follow social distancing rules in the office – especially in compact areas, such as kitchens, meeting rooms and bathrooms.

This poses an important question: Should organisations be learning from the Coronavirus pandemic and looking for ways to protect employees from all potential outbreaks, not just Coronavirus? Would they be prepared if this were to happen again?

62% of respondents said they would welcome new technology into the workplace, if it aided a smooth transition back to work and alleviated their concerns around safety for the long term. Many of us haven’t experienced a global lockdown in our lifetimes, so it naturally raises questions about the future and our ability to adapt as a nation.

The survey also delved into the emotional needs of workers, revealing that 59% of people care about being able to share their feelings at work – with a shocking 36% saying there is currently no offer of mental health support at their place of work. At a time like this, the happiness of employees is pivotal and offering supports helps to instil their confidence in the organisation.

To offer support to those facing a return to work in the coming weeks, SMARTCITTI and WRLD3D created SafeDistance. Not only does the app monitor morale and encourage employees to reach out when they need help, it also creates a digital twin of the workplace, senses real-time movement inside a building, and assesses risk – this means that employees can feel safe to move around freely, significantly reducing the impact on their anxiety and mental health.

Primary features include

  • Safe indoor navigation system: GPS tracking and indoor navigation ensures employees and visitors can be guided around a building and shown the safest route to take, including specific alert notifications on potentially dangerous congested areas.
  • Happy to Help: Allows people to list themselves as a helper or reach out to others for help – whether that is a need of emotional support or just a friendly chat.  People seeking assistance can locate helpers on the app and reach out via messaging. This feature helps to nurture an important sense of community and well-being within organisations.
  • Live room occupancy:  Live footfall monitoring ensures that room capacity is never exceeded, helping organisations to arrange desks in compliance with the 2-metre social distancing guideline. Regular cleaning checks will be prompted and monitored to maintain safe workspaces.
  • Emotional reporting: Users of the app. are regularly encouraged to record how they are feeling, using a simple mood selector. This helps organisations to monitor and boost morale – and encourages employees to be mindful of others.

SafeDistance also has a car parking allocation feature to further support social distancing and sends push notifications to those looking to use meeting rooms, letting them know when it’s safe to enter.

CEO of WRLD, Faizaan Ghauri said: “More and more businesses are starting to plan a return to the workplace and SmartTech will allow them to do this in a much safer and more efficient way. Our plan is take as much stress out of the situation as possible, reassure employees that their employers care about their physical and mental health -  and that they have a long term strategy in place, should there be another wave or a future outbreak.”

Health Canada Authorizes Precision Biomonitoring to Import and Sell Biomeme's SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT-PCR Test in Response to COVID-19

Ultra-portable testing solution approved for use across Canada

GUELPH, ON and PHILADELPHIA, July 7, 2020 /CNW/ - Biomeme and Precision Biomonitoring, industry leaders in rapid DNA field detection, announce that Health Canada has approved Biomeme's SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT-PCR Test and rapid mobile detection platform for immediate deployment across Canada by Precision Biomonitoring. Approval was based on lab validation data generated through stringent testing of viral samples in performance areas including sensitivity and specificity. The approval is aligned with the Government of Canada's ongoing commitment to collaborate with innovative companies dedicating their efforts to combating the pandemic.

"This approval is the result of the dedication and commitment of our teams at Precision Biomonitoring and Biomeme, as well as ongoing collaboration with our validation partners," says Dr. Mario Thomas, CEO of Precision Biomonitoring. "This rapid test can now be distributed everywhere across Canada, especially in remote areas and workplaces where creating virus-free zones is vital. We can now bring the lab to the sample."

More About the Biomeme Device & Software

Weighing only 1.2 kg, battery-operated and able to deliver results for up to nine samples in about 60 minutes, the mobile device and its easy-to-use software are ideal for all locations where screening is needed such as assessment centers, long-term care and nursing homes, retirement communities, ships, airports, borders and more distant regions. Precision Biomonitoring has also partnered with Guelph-based environmental consulting firm, Shared Value Solutions, to bring the approved rapid mobile testing platform to Indigenous communities in northern Ontario in response to COVID-19.

A free and intuitive smartphone mobile app pairs wirelessly with the device to easily run, monitor, and analyze the results of each test. Tests can be run online or offline, results can be interpreted in real-time, and all data can be securely synced to the cloud. Both the device and smartphone can be transported in a laptop-sized bag making it ideal for spot tests, especially when results are now needed in emergency rooms and more rural and remote regions.

More About the Test

The SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT-PCR Test requires no special lab equipment or cold chain and is intended for the qualitative detection of RNA from SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal (throat) swab samples. The assay's two RNA targets are multiplexed together with Biomeme's RNA extraction and RT-PCR process control in a single triple reaction. While being able to perform these tests in remote areas and workplaces is critical, the SARS-COV-2 test is also being manufactured in form factors suitable for high throughput labs. Here is a summary of each shelf-stable, pre-mixed form factor approved for use by health care providers across Canada:

  • 3-Well Go-StripsTM: Optimized for performance in the field. Each Go-StripTM has 3 reaction wells and each well contains a 20 µL lyophilized triplex reaction. With this form factor, there is no aliquoting or mixing of components in the field. You just add your sample to the strips and begin your test.
  • 96-Well Go-PlatesTM: Optimized for high throughput lab use in standard commercial thermocyclers (Bio-Rad CFX96, ABI QuantStudio5). Just like above, each Go-PlateTM is shelf-stable, pre-mixed, and pre-aliquoted with the same lyophilized triplex reaction.
  • Bulk Vials: Optimized more for lab use in any thermocycler. Each vial is shelf-stable, pre-mixed and lyophilized, but they are not pre-aliquoted, so you are free to use your own plastics.

"Having a reliable rapid test is critical for controlling the spread of COVID-19, especially in certain communities or rural settings where testing may take longer. It will allow these communities to get results faster and will enable healthcare professionals to take the necessary steps to expedite their response to COVID-19 cases," said Dr. Rob Kozak, clinical microbiologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

The approval from Health Canada, combined with these capabilities and various form factors, allows Precision Biomonitoring to contribute to initiatives and programs recently implemented by the Government of Canada, as well as close to home in Ontario, where the government continues to focus on increasing testing capacity and creating safe workplaces.

50+ And Healthy Examines The Importance Of Mental Health As We Age

Chicago, IL, July 7, 2020 — The worldwide stay-at-home orders have turned weekend warriors into daily dog walkers, joggers and cyclists — all hoping to stay fit and avoid the “quarantine 15.” But there’s more to being healthy than having a fit physique. Mental health is equally important, but often gets buried beneath the stigma surrounding it.

“Many of you recognize that mental illness is often a taboo subject … due to seeming complexity, mystery and stigma,” explains Murali Rao, MD. “Unfortunately, the high discrimination of the subject leads to a statistic of nearly two-thirds of the world population refusing to seek help for mental health related issues.” Adding: “Though this primer is directed towards learning to help elders, the material can readily apply to any age group.”

Rao, an expert on clinical geriatrics and geriatric psychiatry, addresses the concepts of mental health and mental illnesses in the overarching context of healthy aging in 50+ and Healthy: What You Need to Know About Mental Health and Healthy Aging — for You and Your Loved Ones. This exceptionally strong, evidence-based guide emphasizes the importance of nurturing our mental health as we grow older.

Using easy-to-understand language, he explores common health-related conditions, how to recognize symptoms, practical approaches to treatments and his GAME PLANTMmethod for helping yourself and your loved ones, of any age, during times of distress or mental health crises.

For readers of any educational and professional background, 50+ and Healthy offers easily presented information and relatable case studies.

With this book, you can learn from a world authority about:

1. Healthy aging and mental health

2. Common mental illnesses, why people get them, how to identify them and how to manage them

3. Practical approaches for first aid and later interventions

4. Self-care for mental health and successful aging

If you are interested in healthy aging and how to help yourself, your family members and your friends with mental health, this book is for you. All proceeds from book sales go to a nonprofit organization engaged in mental health awareness education in the United States and India (www.nndcifoundation.org), founded by Dr. Murali Rao.

Author Murali Rao, MD, is a professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He specializes in liaison and emergency psychiatry. Additionally, he serves as a member of multiple professional bodies including the American College of Psychiatrists, the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, CINP, the Indian Psychiatric Society and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA).

Dr. Rao has received multiple awards and fellowships, including Distinguished Life Fellow by the APA, Outstanding Academician Award by the Indo-American Psychiatric Association and the Master Teacher Award by the Stritch School of Medicine. Dr. Rao has also had more than 80 journal publications, books and book-chapters. Just In Time For Christmas In July: A Santa Tale With A Modern Twist

New York, NY, July 7, 2020 — Santa’s been kidnapped just before the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, but almost no one notices his absence. Christmas has become an exercise in one-upmanship, with children practically dictating their wish lists and parents gauging the success of the holiday solely upon their ability to outdo their neighbors. Santa needs to be rescued for people to remember the true meaning of Christmas. Can a band of unfairly labeled misfits culled from The Naughty List rise to the challenge?

Author Thomas Conway sets the stage for worldwide adventure in this imaginative, modern Christmas tale that blends elements of pop culture with the age-old tradition of Santa Claus. The Naughty List opens in a world without Santa, where toy manufacturer Eastern Industries has just released a new holiday marketing scheme, monopolizing the attention of the children and draining their holiday spirit. With Christmas fast approaching and the North Pole in chaos, a team of intrepid youngsters recruited from Santa’s Naughty List aim to rescue Santa and save the holiday.

While primarily a Santa tale, The Naughty List cleverly incorporates Winter holiday beliefs from around the world, including the legend of Marduk, a Babylonian god; the Roman feast of Saturnalia; the epic story of Jangar from North Asia; Moravian traditions of animal communication; and the present real-life adventures of Israeli Santa Claus, Nicola Abdou.

Also sprinkled with references to holiday favorites such as Miracle on 34th StreetT’was the Night Before Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and others, this wonderfully rich tale promotes right over wrong, good over evil and love over fear.

Suitable for all ages, The Naughty List skillfully weaves valuable lessons about overindulgence and society’s tendency to put labels on children, with the overarching theme that when kids misbehave they should not be defined by their bad deeds but rather see it as a learning opportunity, since when we appreciate the best in humanity and combine our talents, we are capable of almost anything.

The Naughty List, winner of the 2020 Indie Book Award in the E-Book Fiction category, is the first release from Thomas Conway. His 30-year career spans various industries. When not at work, he devotes his time to environmental matters and inventing stories for his two children.

How Important is it to Have Good Eyesight When Training?

When it comes to sports performance, eyesight is a key element that is often overlooked. Many people focus on the weights and exercises during their training. However, good eyesight is important for a number of reasons when training.

Visual Contrast

When training, especially for sports, it’s important to be able to discern objects from their background. Over time, eyesight can be decreased to the point where it becomes difficult to make out items that are farther away. Items such as baseballs, footballs, and even soccer balls that blend into the background can slow down a player’s reaction time. Having an adequate level of visual contrast will ensure that you can pick out these items from far away.

Quick Reaction Times

When training, your reaction time is everything. Whether it’s catching a ball instead of dropping it or moving out of the way of a defender, you need to react quickly to be successful. When you have dry eyes when training, it can reduce your ability to see the ball or defender until it’s too late to properly react. It’s best to undergo a dry eye treatment  to ensure that dry eyes don’t impair your training experience.

Enhance Coordination

When it comes to sports performance, coordination is a big factor that makes it successful. From lining up the bat to hit the ball to catching a throw, you need to be able to coordinate your vision with the movements of your body. Most studies have shown that poor sports performance isn’t usually in the movement itself. Rather, it’s in the proper movement being performed at the wrong time or place. When you have good vision, you can coordinate your movements with the right accuracy regarding time and place.

Visual Exercises Are Just As Important As Other Training

Sports optometrists are working with all levels of athletes throughout various types of sports to enhance players’ vision. Contrary to what you may think, your eyesight is like a muscle. When exercised correctly, it can enhance your ability to perform on the field. It all starts with a sports vision examination to determine a player’s weaknesses. Then, the sports optometrist will address those areas of weakness with more exercises to normalize the functioning areas of the eye to enhance the player’s performance.

Having good eyesight is essential to your sports performance and your training. When you can train with good eyesight, you can enhance your ability to perform on the field. However, if you train with poor eyesight, you will be engraining bad performance into your brain.
