COVID-19 vaccine developers AstraZeneca, CanSino, Johnson & Johnson and ReiThera face multiple challenges, says GlobalData
While there has been widespread press for its COVID-19 vaccine, AstraZeneca, in collaboration with Oxford University, faces multiple challenges in the race to develop a successful product, as reported by Reynald Castañeda, Pharma Writer for the Investigative News team at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. CanSino, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and ReiThera, which are also studying their own adenovirus vector vaccines, are likely to have similar hurdles.
Castañeda explains: “Although it has advantages over other vaccine technologies for COVID-19, the respective companies’ adenovirus vector vaccines are likely to be tripped up by pre-existing antibodies to the vectors used and the need for a second injection to boost protection.”
According to GlobalData, there are at least 38 companies or universities with a recombinant adenovirus-derived vaccine asset for COVID-19 from preclinical to Phase II/III stages. On 3 June, the US Federal Government’s vaccine initiative, Operation Warp Speed, named AstraZeneca’s AZD122, as one of five finalists along with Johnson & Johnson’s candidate.
Castañeda comments: “AZD1222’s recent animal data leave questions about its utility to prevent virus spread. A future booster shot could improve this aspect.
“CanSino Biologics’ Ad5-nCoV and Johnson & Johnson’s vaccines’ disadvantage is they use a human adenovirus vector. This means a significant chunk of people may already have neutralising antibodies against the vector, which decreases efficacy prospects. Phase I Ad5-nCoV data is underwhelming, which underscores this limitation. In contrast, AstraZeneca’sAZD1222 and Rome-based ReiThera’s vaccines use nonhuman vectors and so may not have this issue.”
CanSino’s Ad5-nCoV is already in a Phase II trial that has a primary completion date of January 2021. J&J’s Phase I/IIa will start in July. ReiThera will also begin clinical investigation in the summer. Phase I/II AZD1222 trial data are expected shortly, with the vaccine concurrently in a Phase II/III trial, with data timelines dependent on community viral transmission rates.
Castañeda notes: “Prior reporting has suggested that a standard trial meant for approval that starts in the summer is likely to require around 25,000–30,000 volunteers if the annualized incidence rate is 1.5%. While a human challenge trial design – where study participants would be intentionally challenged with the COVID-19 virus – could be considered to quickly gather protection data, such a trial design also has its own operational and ethical issues.”
Microdermics Inc. Seeks to Commercialize Microneedle Drug Delivery & BioSensing Technology
Seeking strategic M&A or technology out-licensing opportunities
Intradermal Platform provides easy access to skin for both biosensing and therapeutic or cosmetic drug delivery
Completed in vivo studies to validate the effectiveness and reliability of drug delivery and biosensing platforms
Novateur Ventures Inc retained to support Microdermics to commercialize their microneedle drug delivery & biosensing technology
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, June 19, 2020 – Microdermics, a medical device company commercializing a novel microneedle delivery and biosensing platform, seeks strategic M&A or technology out-licensing opportunities with Pharma, cosmetic, and Biotech companies for its microneedle platforms. Novateur Ventures, an established global life sciences advisory company, have entered into an agreement to provide strategic advisory support and to lead the transaction process.
Microdermics has developed a patented, commercially scalable, low-cost, customizable, metal, intradermal microneedle platform that provides easy access to skin for both biosensing and drug delivery. Microdermics have completed in-vivo proof of concept studies to validate the effectiveness and reliability of drug delivery and biosensing platforms, including proof of concept biosensing studies for analytes such as glucose, potassium, sodium, lactate and creatinine.
The global biosensor market expected to be worth $36 Billion by 2027, growing at 7.9% (Grand Review Research), and the electronic drug delivery market expected to be worth $14.5 Billion by 2027, growing at 8.5% per year (P&T Community Research).
Microdermics’ microneedle biosensing technology has been developed for real-time healthcare monitoring and diagnosis, reducing the need for blood sampling and analysis. Manufacturing of Microdermics’ drug delivery platform is highly scalable and can be used to efficiently deliver vaccines and other drugs, as these microneedles work with any liquid injectable or analyte target to eliminate needle-phobia thereby increasing patient compliance, and increase accuracy.
"Intradermal drug delivery is a potential solution to many of the challenges faced by new and existing medicines and will allow pharma companies to unlock the potential of the skin for their current and planned drug products," said Dr. Boris Stoeber, PhD, Acting Chief Executive Officer at Microdermics. "We are confident Novateur Ventures' expertise and proven track record will help us find the right partner to advance our microneedle drug delivery & micro-sensing technology.”
Today, most of the approved analyte sensors and injectable drugs are injected into subcutaneous and intramuscular layers, which can be more painful, costly, require skilled application, higher doses and less accurate. Microdermics' needles are novel, hollow, metallic microneedles, which offer all the benefits of intradermal drug delivery in a simple design:
“Microdermics minimally invasive biosensing technology is one of the best available technologies to enable access to the skin for accurate and continuous monitoring of patient's multi-analyte levels in real time and is agnostic to the type of monitor being used. We believe that our wearable technology could provide valuable opportunity to continuously monitor patients in real time with chronic conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease”, said Ali Ardakani, Founder and Managing Director of Novateur Ventures.”
About Microdermics
Microdermics is a Vancouver based medical device company focused on commercializing a new hollow microneedle delivery platform for breakthrough applications in biosensing and drug delivery. Microdermics' platform aims to revolutionize sensing and drug delivery using our minimally invasive patented technology by providing precise and easy access to the skin.

Over half of all Canadians do not know how to find virtual care
COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for health care from home
TORONTO, June 18, 2020 /CNW/ - The COVID-19 pandemic has put a spotlight on the importance of virtual care. Once an emerging trend, it's now a necessity for health care in Canada. Yet, many are facing challenges. In a recent Lumino Health survey, over half of all Canadians (55%) said they do not know how to find virtual care services.
Forty-nine per cent of Canadians surveyed report the pandemic having negative effects on their physical health and nearly 60% report mental health impacts. This is a three per cent increase from a Sun Life survey conducted earlier in May1, which found 56% of Canadians reported COVID-19 having a negative impact on their mental health.
Interestingly, despite identifying a physical or mental health concern, only a small percentage of Canadians are seeking treatment. Of respondents who said COVID-19 is negatively impacting their mental health, only 21% have sought professional care. This rate is consistent with Canadians who say the pandemic is having a negative impact on their physical health – with only 21% seeking professional help.
"The need for Canadians to connect virtually with health care professionals has never been more important," said Chris Denys, Senior Vice-President, Possibilities, Lumino Health. "As physical distancing continues, it's our goal to bring Canadians the tools and resources they need to manage their health from home. The Lumino Health network has access to more than 12,000 health care providers who offer virtual services."
Although many Canadians are finding it difficult knowing where to access virtual care, awareness is high (72%). When asked what they believe are the main benefits of virtual care, Canadians listed:
convenience (54%);
no waiting rooms (50%); and
speed to connect with a health care professional (40%).
Lumino Health: connecting Canadians with solutions
"When it comes to taking care of yourself, finding the right health care provider, solution or information can make all the difference. However, we know it's not always easy. That's why we created Lumino Health – Canada's largest network of health care providers, free to all Canadians," Denys explains.
Features of Lumino Health include:
A 'virtual visit' icon, providing Canadians with access to over 12,000 health care providers who offer virtual care services.
A search engine to find dentists, massage therapists, mental health professionals and other health care providers in your area.
Access to more than 14 million ratings submitted by Sun Life Clients and their family members.
Cost information to help compare how much each provider charges.
A collection of resources and information to help Canadians manage their health and wellness.
As the situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, Lumino Health will help Canadians access the support they need to manage their health and wellness. For more information, visit LuminoHealth.ca.
About the survey The survey is based on findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between May 8 and May 11, 2020. A sample of 1,001 Canadians was drawn from the Ipsos I-Say online panel aged 18 and older. The data for Canadians surveyed was weighted to ensure the sample's regional, age, and gender composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population.
The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 3.5% at 95% confidence level had all Canadian adults been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to methodological change, coverage error and measurement error.

Bunzl Canada Launches National Hygiene Compliance Platform
New IoT solution rolled out to warehouse operations to verify and validate cleaning protocols
BURLINGTON, ON, June 18, 2020 /CNW/ - Bunzl Canada (bunzlcanada.ca) today announced the phased rollout of its digital cleaning management system, WandaMOBILE™, to major distribution centres across Canada.
As an essential link in Canada's grocery, safety, and cleaning & hygiene supply chain, keeping its buildings and vehicles clean and hygienic to protect both employees and customers is vital for Bunzl. However, like most organizations, the national distributor struggled to easily verify and validate cleaning program compliance. To solve that problem, Bunzl collaborated with its development partner, Visionstate IoT, on the WandaMOBILE™ application.
Accessible from any mobile device, WandaMOBILE™ contains the specific cleaning protocols for each warehouse facility and vehicle fleet, including both tasks and frequencies. Staff can easily enter cleaning activities as they are completed. Managers can quickly and conveniently view compliance dashboards to verify that necessary activities are taking place to keep facilities clean, healthy and safe. The system is designed to focus cleaning efforts, improve effectiveness and promote compliance in any type of facility.
According to Bunzl's Senior Director of Operations, Tim McKinnon, the program pilot was highly successful. "We began this initiative in our Mississauga, Ontario facility. The first month was a learning curve - as expected, it took our team some time to get used to a new way of doing things. But by week four, our cleaning program was running so well that our compliance rose to over 100%, and the feedback from our management team and employees was really positive. Now we've begun a phased rollout, beginning with our five largest distribution centres across the country."
John Howlett, President of Bunzl Canada and a passionate proponent of the system, said it will be implemented in all of the company's office and warehouse locations by the end of the year. "If you can't measure it, you can't manage or improve it," he said. "The health and wellbeing of our employees and customers is our top priority and foremost concern. Digitally managing and monitoring cleaning program compliance enables us to maintain a cleaner, healthier and more hygienic work environment for our employees. That protects our customers, and gives them confidence when our vehicles arrive with their critical supplies."
WandaMOBILE™ is a component of the WandaNEXT™ system, comprised of robust analytics software and data collection components that include touchscreen tablets, infrared traffic counting units, the new mobile application and IoT alert buttons. Its configuration can be customized to meet specific facility management needs. The system's growing installation base includes healthcare, retail, commercial office, conference, airport and distribution facilities across Canada and the United States. It was also recently launched in the United Kingdom and Australia.
"WandaMOBILE™ is a powerful compliance management tool that helps to raise the standard of cleaning and hygiene in public spaces," said John Putters, CEO of Visionstate IoT. "The feature-rich technology continues to evolve to enable and support state of the art environmental management."

CPAP Machines Canada launches Free CPAP Mask Guarantee program
TORONTO, June 18, 2020 /CNW/ - CPAP Machines Canada, a trusted online CPAP and Oxygen therapy provider treating Sleep Apnea sufferers from coast-to-coast, is launching free CPAP Mask Insurance as part of their ongoing efforts to modernize Sleep Therapy. The new initiative is another step in CPAP Machines Canada's effort to make CPAP therapy more convenient for Canadians.
"The single most important input to compliant CPAP therapy is finding a comfortable, properly fitting CPAP mask," explains CPAP Machines Canada Clinical Support Manager Ghalia El Ghazouli. "For clients trying CPAP for the first time, finding the right CPAP mask can take some iteration. And existing CPAP users are sometimes hesitant to try a new and improved CPAP mask design, for fear the new mask won't fit as well as their old one. By offering free CPAP Mask insurance, clients can try new masks worry-free, helping them take advantage of the newest CPAP Mask technology available and increase comfort and compliance."
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Sleep Apnea occurs when your throat muscles intermittently relax and block your airway during sleep. The most noticeable sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring, although not everyone who has obstructive sleep apnea snores. The consequences of NOT treating Sleep Apnea are numerous, as it can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues like heart attack or stroke, and weight gain among other ailments.
The good news is that with compliant CPAP therapy, Sleep Apnea can be completely managed. Not only does that lower the risk of associated heart problems and weight gain, but it leaves people feeling a level of energy that they have not experienced in years!
CPAP Machines Canada online-only model is convenient, and they have not sacrificed customer care.
"Virtual Care can still be Quality Care. Our CPAP clinicians are all medically trained nurses and respiratory therapists. We are available to support our clients by phone or video consultation, and we provide follow-up with their physician and healthcare team at their request for no additional charge. Our team mantra is, "we do not sell CPAP. We sell better sleep". And that's an ongoing responsibility that we take very seriously".
CPAP Machines Canada Free Mask Guarantee initiative will help CPAP Machines Canada's clients find a CPAP mask that fits comfortably, risk-free.

Temporary Isolation Can Be TheOpportunity To Permanently Transform Your Weight And Health
Los Angeles, CA, June 18, 2020 ̶ Not sure how to eat and stay healthy this quarantine season without resorting to your familiar diet of spaghetti, bread, pizza, and sugar? Candice Rosen, R.N., MSW, and author of the upcoming book Forget Dieting: It’s All About Data-Driven Fueling! encourages "trophology," or "food combining," which is one of the foundations of Rosen's Data-Driven Fueling Plan. As you combine foods, Rosen adds that "monitoring blood glucose is the key to weight gain vs. weight loss; good health vs. poor health."
1. Make Wednesdays and Fridays Vegan Days. According to Rosen, avoid dairy! Try vegan yogurts, cheeses, and milks. Dairy is inflammatory and will deplete your bones of calcium (it’s true!). There are unsweetened milks of almond, hemp, cashew, etc., and all are available in grocery stores. A low blood glucose breakfast idea would be a sprouted grain English muffin, spread with a tofu or nut-based cream cheese, some sliced tomatoes, and topped off with sea salt or Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend.
2. Eat fruits that are high in fiber. Apples, bananas, oranges, berries ̶ the list goes on! You will still want to avoid sugary fruit juices, as well as very sweet fruits like pineapples and mangos while trying to lose weight. Fruit is always eaten alone with two exceptions: they can be added to a vegan smoothie and they can be eaten with a nut or seed butter. These healthy fats reduce the chance of a blood glucose spike.
3. Nothing white. To lower blood glucose, do not eat or combine animal proteins with any white potatoes, bread, rice, or pasta… EVER. Sorry!
4. Eat More Sweet Potatoes. Think wholesome, nutritious, responsibly grown, pancreatic-friendly foods (food that doesn’t raise your blood glucose) like sweet potatoes and yams, which are an incredibly nutritious carbohydrate that are low in sugar levels and provide fiber. They’re best consumed baked or steamed, but can also be cooked in a variety of other ways. A great lunch or dinner option (and it is inexpensive) is a baked sweet potato, split down the middle with a large spoonful of black beans, a tablespoon of tomatillo salsa, and a side salad. To lower blood sugar, eat them with veggies and plant-based protein together… NOT MEAT!
5. Try Fish. Give your body a break from animal protein. Red meats increase inflammation and provide poor sources of fat. However, if you crave protein, try fish! For those who aren’t allergic, fish is a fantastic source of protein that’s low in carbohydrates and contains high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, one of the few consumable healthy fats! If consuming fish raw, remember only sashimi-style – no white rice! To lower blood sugar, combine fish with veggies, not starches or fruit.
