Ascensia Diabetes Care Receives Amended Health Canada License for Contour® Next Link 2.4 for Use With the Minimed™ 670g Insulin Pump System

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 17, 2018 /CNW/ - Ascensia Diabetes Care today announced the receipt of an amended license from Health Canada for the CONTOUR® NEXT LINK 2.4 blood glucose meter to be used with the new Medtronic MiniMed™ 670G insulin pump system with SmartGuard™ algorithm.

"Achieving another important regulatory milestone demonstrates Ascensia's ongoing commitment to delivering innovative products that help improve the lives of individuals affected by diabetes," said Annika Pawaroo, Country Division Head of Canada, Ascensia Diabetes Care. "We are proud to be able to offer new options for Canadians living with diabetes who need and want meters that are accurate."

Type 1 diabetes affects about 300,000 Canadians1. The primary goal of diabetes management is to control blood glucose levels and ensure they are kept within a normal range. When blood glucose levels get too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia), it can lead to serious complications.

The CONTOUR® NEXT LINK 2.4 is the exclusive licensed blood glucose meter designed to connect wirelessly with the Medtronic MiniMed™ 670G insulin pump system. The CONTOUR® NEXT LINK 2.4 meter provides highly accurate blood glucose results that can be used for the insulin dosing and calibration of the Guardian™ Sensor 3, the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensor. Accurate results also help people with diabetes reduce the risk of hypo- and hyperglycemia2. The meter provides proven accuracy3 utilizing the highly accurate CONTOUR® NEXT test strips.

The MiniMed™ 670G insulin pump system is the world's first self-adjusting insulin pump system. It is designed to help people with diabetes achieve better glucose control, with its advanced SmartGuard™ Auto Mode algorithm, by automatically monitoring glucose and providing the appropriate basal insulin doses for people 7 years of age and older with type 1 diabetes. The system will also automatically suspend insulin delivery when sensor glucose levels reach a pre-set low limit, and resumes insulin delivery once sensor glucose levels recover.

New app aims to help people manage life in the early stages of dementia or mild cognitive impairment

VANCOUVER, Oct. 17, 2018 /CNW/ - A new mobile app aims to help people with early dementia or mild cognitive impairment to manage daily activities and keep track of how they are doing, providing greater independence.

The novel technology guides users through their day. Using audio, text or visual prompts, it reminds people to carry out tasks and activities such as taking medications, going to appointments, preparing meals ‒ as well as making healthy food choices.

Called DataDay, the app also helps people track their cognition, mood and physical activity. It captures information as users engage with it, reminding them what they've done and charting any changes in their condition.

Its name is a play on "day-to-day" because it structures and follows users' daily routines.

Canadian dementia researcher Dr. Arlene Astell spent nine years developing DataDay, which was unveiled yesterday at the AGE-WELL Annual Conference in Vancouver. Dr. Astell co-created the app with people who have dementia.

"Most people once they have a diagnosis go home and live life with dementia. We want to give people something they can use for personal support and to keep track of how they are doing," explains Dr. Astell, who holds a Research Chair in Dementia Wellbeing at the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences in Whitby, Ontario.

AGE-WELL supported research focusing on the needs of older adults, caregivers and clinicians in using the app, while the Baycrest-led Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI) financed the technical development of the app and portal. UK-based New Dynamics of Aging funded the first phase of the technology.

Beta testing of DataDay is now starting in Durham Region in Ontario. The app, or a device with it installed, will be provided initially to patients of local memory assessment clinics, which will keep track of users through a special portal for those who opt in.

DataDay is made for Apple and android smart phones and tablets. "We've made the way you interact with it and the type of information collected responsive to what users would like. They helped shape it," says Dr. Astell.

One of them is Alex Vanderzand, 75, of Pickering, Ont., who was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment in 2014 and feels that DataDay will be a "real benefit" to keep track of activities and record what he's done each day.

"When I first got the diagnosis, I felt like I was thrown to the wolves," says Vanderzand, who is especially concerned about being a burden to his wife Penny, 73. She's also part of the testing process for the app and thinks caregivers will find it helpful too. "It's going to give everybody a tool to help function," she says.

DataDay is designed for people with a range of types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia. It is intended for use from the early stages of cognitive decline to moderate dementia, and for mild cognitive impairment, which many people experience before dementia.

"The aim is for people to start using DataDay as early as possible. We hope that once the app becomes part of their daily routine, they will keep using it as their dementia progresses," says Dr. Astell, adding that it is best if a health service, such as a memory clinic, assists with set up and monitoring.

Once the early roll-out in Durham is completed in March 2019, the plan is to make the app widely available through memory clinics. A French version will be created.

By capturing accurate information on how someone is doing, the app can help users, caregivers and their clinicians decide whether or not additional health services are needed. It's hoped that this will cut down on emergency room visits, she says.

"We can give people with dementia some control over their lives – and better plan services when they need help."

Canadians are invited to join the conversation: Raise Your Hand for Diabetes

LAVAL, QC, Oct. 17, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Sanofi Canada is on a mission to raise awareness and money to help people living with diabetes, one of the leading causes of death and disability in Canada.1 In honor of Diabetes Awareness Month, which begins on November 1, Sanofi Canada is calling upon Canadians to support Diabetes Canada and Diabète Québec with just one click of a button. For each new LIKE on the Raise Your Hand for Diabetes campaign's Facebook page from November 1 until World Diabetes Day (November 14), Sanofi Canada will donate $5 to the associations, up to a maximum of $50,000.

Last week, Sanofi Canada got a head start on Diabetes Awareness Month efforts. At the Diabetes Canada/Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism Professional Conference, Sanofi Canada hosted a Raise Your Hand for Diabetes airstream in support of Diabetes Canada. Attendees shared their personal experiences with diabetes and their hopes for those living with the disease. For each testimony, Sanofi Canada made a donation, raising $25,000 for the association.

"The Raise Your Hand for Diabetes campaign aligns with Diabetes Canada's mission to help people who are living with diabetes and to help work towards a cure. The campaign provides role models with everyday people choosing to use their voices to strike out the stigma against those living with diabetes. By doing so, they encourage people to admit that they are affected by diabetes, consequently making it easier to reach out and provide treatment," said Russell Williams, Vice President Government Relations and Public Policy, Diabetes Canada.

Raise Your Hand for Diabetes is a unique awareness initiative that leverages patient and caregiver stories to create a community in which people living with diabetes play a direct role in dispelling the myths and stigma surrounding the disease. By visiting the website raiseyourhandfordiabetes.ca, Canadians can upload a video, picture or quote about what matters most on their personal diabetes journey. The website also provides a wealth of resources on diabetes management, including topics such as diet, physical exercise and treatment.

"To strike out diabetes, we must continue to raise awareness and help people better understand the disease. This campaign is a wonderful way to try and achieve the mission of decreasing the stigma and ultimately end diabetes," said Dr. Alice Y.Y. Cheng, MD, FRCPC, Endocrinologist at Credit Valley Hospital and St. Michael's Hospital and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto's Department of Medicine.

"Sanofi Canada is proud to support people living with diabetes. Our Raise Your Hand for Diabetes initiative builds on a legacy that dates back almost 100 years to the 1920s, when the company, then known as Connaught Laboratories, worked with Doctors Banting, Best, Macleod and Collip on the first purification and large-scale production techniques for insulin. This helped turn diabetes into a manageable condition," claimed Michael Mullette, President, Sanofi Canada. "We are committed to continuing to invest in research and to supporting those living with diabetes."

First launched in Québec three years ago in partnership with Diabète Québec, Raise Your Hand for Diabetes has been expanded nationwide in collaboration with Diabetes Canada and STOP Diabetes Foundation.

Health Canada has approved INVOKANA®* (canagliflozin) for reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), the first SGLT2 inhibitor in Canada to receive this indication(1)

INVOKANA® has been shown to reduce the combined risk of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction and nonfatal stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease by 18 per cent compared to placebo2

TORONTO, Oct. 17, 2018 /CNW/ - The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson announced today that Health Canada has approved INVOKANA® (canagliflozin) for reduction of the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), which is composed of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction (heart attack) and nonfatal stroke, in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who have established cardiovascular disease.3

Health Canada's approval is based on the findings from the CANVAS Program, which is the longest completed cardiovascular outcome program of any sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor to-date.4 The CANVAS Program evaluated the effect of INVOKANA® on cardiovascular risk in a broad population of more than 10,000 adults with type 2 diabetes who had established cardiovascular disease or were at risk (with two or more risk factors) for cardiovascular disease.

Overall, treatment with INVOKANA® significantly reduced the combined risk of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction and nonfatal stroke by 14 per cent.5 When assessed separately, the three components of MACE showed similar reductions – 13 per cent (95 per cent Confidence Interval (CI) 0.72 - 1.06) for cardiovascular death; 15 per cent (95 per cent CI 0.69 - 1.05) for nonfatal myocardial infarction; and 10 per cent (95 per cent CI 0.71 – 1.15) for nonfatal stroke.6 In patients with established cardiovascular disease, treatment with INVOKANA® reduced the combined risk of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction and nonfatal stroke by 18 per cent.7

"Since its approval in 2014, INVOKANA® has proven its ability to help type 2 diabetes patients achieve tangible clinical benefits, such as lower A1C levels and weight loss," said Dr. Vincent Woo, CANVAS Program investigator and endocrinologist at the Diabetes Research Group, University of Manitoba.** "Canadians living with diabetes have a higher risk for cardiovascular events, and addressing these risks is a key part of diabetes management. INVOKANA® now has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events among a broad population of patients."

Of the over 3.5 million Canadians living with diabetes, at least 90 per cent have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.8 By 2028, it is estimated that the number of Canadians with diabetes will grow to more than 4.6 million.9 Canadians with diabetes are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease 15 years earlier than those without the condition, which can cause individuals to have complications including heart attack or stroke.10

Individuals living with diabetes are over three times more likely to be hospitalized due to cardiovascular disease,11 and each year, 30 per cent of strokes and 40 per cent of heart attacks are a result of diabetes.12 It is important for patients to manage their diabetes with diet and exercise as well as treatment to help reduce their risk of these associated complications.13

About the CANVAS Program

The CANVAS Program is composed of two, nearly-identical, large cardiovascular outcome studies: CANVAS (CANagliflozin CardioVascular Assessment Study) and CANVAS-R (Study of the Effects of Canagliflozin on Renal Endpoints in Adult Subjects with T2DM).14 It is the longest completed cardiovascular outcome program of any SGLT2 inhibitor to-date.

The CANVAS Program evaluated the effect of INVOKANA® on cardiovascular risk in 10,142 adults with type 2 diabetes who had established cardiovascular disease or were at risk (with two or more risk factors) for cardiovascular disease. It was conducted in 30 countries, including Canada with 16 Canadian trial site locations and 19 Canadian investigators.

In the CANVAS Program, a vast majority (90 per cent) of patients had a history of hypertension and 66 per cent of patients had a history of CV disease (14 per cent had a history of heart failure).15 The study assessed the cardiovascular efficacy and safety of INVOKANA® relative to placebo in patients receiving commonly-used diabetes agents.16 The primary endpoint was defined as major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), composed of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack and nonfatal stroke.

In addition to MACE, other cardiovascular clinical outcomes of the CANVAS Program included a 33 per cent reduction in hospitalization due to heart failure and a 30 per cent reduction in the composite of death or hospitalization due to heart failure.17 With respect to renal function, patients treated with INVOKANA® over a period of 6.5 years experienced an initial fall in mean eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) that thereafter stabilized, whereas patients treated with placebo experienced a progressive decline in eGFR.18

The mean duration of treatment was approximately 2.9 years,19 and the mean follow-up time was approximately 3.6 years.20

Overall, adverse events seen in the CANVAS Program were generally consistent with the known safety profile of INVOKANA®21; however, an increased risk of amputation with canagliflozin was seen. The risk of amputation in CANVAS was 0.59/100 patient-years vs. 0.28/100 patient-years in the INVOKANA® arm and the placebo arm, respectively. The risk of amputation in CANVAS-R was 0.75/100 patient-years vs. 0.42/100 patient-years in the INVOKANA® arm and the placebo arm, respectively.22

The risk of amputation was highest in patients with a baseline history of prior amputation, peripheral vascular disease and neuropathy.

About INVOKANA®

INVOKANA® is an oral, once-daily prescription treatment used to lower blood glucose (sugar) levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.23 INVOKANA®belongs to a class of medications called sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which offer a novel approach to treating diabetes by increasing the excretion of glucose in the urine, resulting in greater loss of calories.24

INVOKANA® was approved by Health Canada on May 23, 2014. The treatment is indicated as monotherapy or in combination with other antihyperglycemic agents as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. INVOKANA®is also approved to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction and nonfatal stroke) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease. INVOKANA® is currently approved as a single agent in 79 countries.

Common side effects reported with INVOKANA® include vaginal yeast infection, hypoglycemia, yeast infection of the penis, urinary tract infection, increased urination, constipation, skin ulcer, nausea and thirst.25 For a complete list of side effects, please refer to the INVOKANA® Product Monograph available here.

INVOKANA® has been studied in more than 18,000 patients with type 2 diabetes across 14 double-blind, controlled Phase 3 and Phase 4 clinical trials.26,27

4 Ways Marijuana Businesses Could Benefit From Banking Law Changes

The old adage “money talks” could be revised to “money screams” when it comes to money and the legalized marijuana business.

“There is just too much cash running through these pot businesses for something not to change,” says Sarah Lee Gossett Parrish (www.sarahleegossettparrish.com), a cannabis industry lawyer. ‘’The status quo – not allowing banks to legally work with pot businesses – is not going to work for very much longer.”

Although marijuana is still illegal under federal law, some state laws allow it, and that leaves distributors of legal marijuana in peril.

Wall Street interest in marijuana firms is at an all time high.  The North American cannabis market is expected to go from $9.2 billion in 2017 to $47.3 billion within 10 years, according to Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics.

That kind of money attracts the movers and shakers in the upper echelon of the financial markets who know how to pull strings in Washington.  U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said recently that if the Democrats’ narrow chances of capturing the Senate in November succeed, Democrats would vote in favor of a bill to end federal oversight of marijuana and let states handle the issue.

“The politics are tricky, but money is a great motivator in politics,” Parrish says.  “Plus as more states continue to jump on the bandwagon, there will be huge incentives for the banks to want to get involved with the business.”

A few small credit unions offer marijuana businesses checking accounts, but most financial institutions are awaiting the federal government to act.  And that means most marijuana businesses are dealing with large amounts of cash.

She says allowing financial institutions to work with legal marijuana businesses would ease these issues:

  • Financing. Marijuana growers are like any other business people. They occasionally need to borrow money for a variety of reasons. Being able to work with a bank will open up more opportunities.
  • Credit card access. Customers would be able to use credit cards to purchase marijuana, and marijuana businesses would have better ways to track spending and income.
  • Cash violence. It is not unusual for some marijuana businesses to handle $20,000 or more in cash. This is not only dangerous for the people carrying the money, but for innocent bystanders should a robbery occur.
  • IRS paper trail. Cash transactions are easier to hide from the Internal Revenue Service.  Putting the money in a bank is an easier way for the IRS to track revenue from a business.

“It is ridiculous for the federal government to put these shackles on businesses that are allowed to operate under their state laws,” Parrish says.  “But it can’t last.  Money talks.”

Or screams…

With Halloween just two weeks away, kids will be eating all the candy they can find and sugar levels will be through the roof. But how much sugar is too much, and what are the signs your child is sugar overdosing?

Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O., a New York-based Osteopathic Physician board-certified in family and anti-aging medicine, gives the rundown on sugar intake and what you need to know to keep your child out of a sugar coma.

How Much Sugar Is Too Much?

For children, it depends on their age and their calorie intake, but 12-25 grams a day is just enough.

What Are the Signs of Too Much Sugar?

#1: Sugar High

A sugar high happens when there are extremely high levels of blood sugar, which results in high energy and shaking of the hands. The candy equivalent is three Butterfingers, which is 30 grams.

#2: Sugar Crash

A sugar crash usually happens within an hour, and glucose levels in the body will drop, causing energy to decline as well. During a crash, you’ll most likely be fatigued, hungry, and may also have a headache. To get rid of a crash, your child’s best bet is to eat an apple or banana.

#3: Your Child is Craving More

Sugary foods release dopamine, which is the same chemical released during drug use.  Once your child starts eating more sugary foods, such as those Halloween treats, the craving for more will continue. Pears are a great alternative, since it has almost 14 grams of sugar and reduces the risk of heart disease.

#4: Sleeping is Almost Impossible

Serotonin is released, which is our relaxation hormone, and is needed for a child to have a good night’s sleep. If insomnia issues arise, it’s time to reduce sugar intake.

Please let me know if you’re interested in featuring Dr. Calapai’s insight editorially. I’ve included his bio below. Additionally, I would love to put you in touch with Dr. Calapai for any upcoming stories you may be working on where his medical expertise is a fit.

Longest-Living Lung Cancer Survivor Shares The Plan That Helped Him Beat Cancer

Hampton, VA, October 16, 2018 — No one wants to hear from their doctor that they have cancer, and only six months to live. But these are the words that Dr. Carl O. Helvie heard 44 years ago. While his doctor encouraged him to begin traditional treatment right away, Helvie knew there had to be another way to treat his cancer without the negative side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, or the invasiveness of surgery. After a lot of praying and a good amount of soul-searching, he opted to look for an alternative way to beat his cancer.

Today, Dr. Helvie is the longest-living lung cancer survivor in the world and he credits this with his decision to take a holistic approach in his treatment. His treatment proved so successful, Dr. Helvie used it to develop a simple plan that he shares in his new book, Reducing Your Cancer Risk: A Holistic Approach (Booklocker Inc.). It's not complicated—it's not rocket science—but it is based on years of proven research. The book explores the environment that brings cancer and the human body together, and offers steps to take before these three elements interact to cause the disease.

Listed in '50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading in 2014,' Helvie recommends anyone receiving a cancer diagnosis to take the time to really think about what they want to do for their treatment plan. Adding, "People shouldn't jump into chemotherapy or surgery if they don't have all of the information and have a chance to think about it."

In 2014, Dr. Helvie founded the Carl O. Helvie Holistic Cancer Foundation—a foundation different from other cancer foundations in that they focus on the holistic approach and multiple aspects of education, research and patient care for many types of cancer. For each area of content in the book there is a review of current research studies, and steps we can take to avoid carcinogens and strengthen the body. Also included are interviews with over 40 national leaders, discussing vastly different areas ranging from GMOs and EMTs to gratitude and forgiveness. There is also a how-to section that covers everything from meditation, gratitude and faith, to minor changes in diet, drinking water and reducing stress.

A prolific author, Helvie has written 10 books, more than 55 articles, and has presented 57 research papers throughout the US and Europe. In retirement, he focuses his research on natural interventions for health issues, which led him to develop a nursing theory that has helped him establish a nursing center and improve primary care for homeless and low-income families. Since retiring, he has written two more books and served as the host of a holistic health radio show. In 1999, he was presented the Distinguished Career Award in Public Health from the American Public Health Association. He has been interviewed on more than 150 radio and television shows about his two most recent books.

Excerpts from reviews on Reducing Your Cancer Risk:

Laura Fabiani, Library of Clean Reads: "Reducing Your Cancer Risk is an excellent and practical resource book chock-full of information that can motivate one to make lifestyle changes that can prevent cancer...The book is divided into three parts. The first discusses Environmental Factors and includes ways to avoid or prevent exposure to risk factors... The second discusses Individual Factors and includes lifestyle choices to increase one's resistance to cancer and build a better immunity... The third discusses Mental and Spiritual Aspects and includes compassion, meditation, forgiveness, prayer and stress management... Although written by an educated man with extensive knowledge, Mr. Helvie keeps the information easy to read and follow by using the format of bullet point suggestions that can be implemented immediately.

If you are looking to lead a healthier lifestyle and want to have a practical manual on what to do to prevent cancer, this is the ideal book for you...The contents page, index and numerous links and references to over 40 other professionals make this book a handy resource that has gained a coveted place on my desk."

NewAgeJournal.com: "Reducing Your Cancer Risk is an essential reference guide for those who want to prevent cancer or are currently struggling with a cancer diagnosis. Western medicine pushes the traditional radiation, chemotherapy and surgery to 'cure' cancer. In reality, these treatments cause cancer to proliferate and kill off healthy cells... In each section, the author describes specific things a person can do to prevent cancer and then provides action steps to assist in implementing these suggestions... This book is very well written and easy to read. In fact, I could not put it down... As a retired hospice and holistic wellness nurse, I really appreciate his all-encompassing approach."

Rev Dr. Anne Marie Evers, Best-Selling Author; Ordained Minister; Doctor of Divinity; CEO of Affirmations International Publishing Company; Radio Host: "I found the book so interesting ... I could not put it down until I had read it from cover to cover. So much of the information we may know or probably have heard about, however the way the author sets it out makes it new, tantalizing and exciting. I was thinking as I read through it, everyone can benefit from reading and using this information... The book covers all aspects of health, diet, exercise, meditation, prayer and much more coupled with a huge dose of 'Common Sense.' ...Put it in a way that is interesting to read and understand."

ANTI -AGING PRODUCTS AND INGREDIENTS: DON’T GET CREAMED BY FALSE HOPE IN A JAR.

SEPARATING THE SKINCARE HEROES FROM THE ZEROES

Here's what is certain: There are no firming or tightening products whose results can duplicate what you derive from in-office procedures such as dermal fillers, Botox, lasers, or cosmetic surgery. Board- Certified Denver plastic surgeon Manish Shah says, “There are anti- aging products or ingredients that do perform significantly better than others and can make a profound difference in the skin’s appearance while others are simply “false hope in a jar.”

Why don’t most products work the way they claim? Almost without exception, when you buy a product claiming to tighten skin, its effects, if any, are due to ingredients such as film-forming agents. Just like the name states, film-forming agents form a film on the skin, and that can make the skin "feel" tighter. The effect is temporary and you won't see noticeable lifting of sagging skin, but the sensation is often enough to convince women that the product is working. Dr. Shah stresses that, “Skin "feeling" tighter is not the same as making a real change for the better in the tone or laxity of your skin. Using what really works will get you closer to the results you want.”

THE HEROES

Dr. Shah says, “Sunscreen SPF 30 or above is the best antiaging cream you can use.  It prevents skin cancer as well as UVA rays that cause loss of collagen and wrinkles in the skin.  Reapply every 2 hours, use a powder sun block and carry in your pocketbook for quick and easy sunscreen touchups.  My favorite powder sunblock is Colorescience, and my favorite base sunscreens have titanium or zinc oxide in them as active ingredients.”

Retinoids work great to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and help boost collagen production,” says Dr. Shah.”  He adds, “Over the counter retinols are good, Neutrogena makes a good one, or prescriptions such as Retin- A.”

Glycolic acid also reduces fine lines and wrinkles and helps fade pigmentary damage from the sun.  “I often have patients alternate nights with retinoid and glycolic,” says Dr. Shah.

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant which reduces free radical damage and is great for anti-aging and helps brighten the skin.  Dr. Shah often recommends it in the morning, underneath sunblock, or at night if patients are too sensitive to tolerate retinoids and glycolic acid.

Ceramides are a type of lipid found in the membrane of cells. Dr. Shah states that, “They help hold skin cells together, forming a protective layer that plumps the skin and retains moisture. Ceramide levels decrease as we age which leads to loss of hydration, less skin turnover and dryer, more damaged skin. Replenishing the skin's ceramide levels will help restore moisture and fortify the skin's natural barrier, helping skin look and feel younger.” So use a ceramide containing moisturizer for your whole body daily.

Hydroquinone works to even out sun spots, blotches, and mottled skin. A little hydroquinone goes a long way. "It's the most effective ingredient for bleaching skin," says Dr. Shah.  Hydroquinone fades hyperpigmentation by blocking the enzyme that triggers melanin production in the skin.

Green Tea Extract is loaded with nutrients called polyphenols, which have been shown to fight free radicals. It is an amazing antioxidant. Studies have found that ingredients in green tea can reduce sun damage and may protect against skin cancer when applied topically. Dr. Shah offers that, “Using green tea extract under sunscreen can provide an extra dose of protection. Polyphenols in creams and lotions may help slow signs of aging, reduce sagging skin and decrease wrinkles.”

THE ZEROES

The majority of anti-aging creams are still based on moisturizers such as mineral oil.  Wrinkles look worse when they are dry, so any kind of moisturizer helps, but it’s only temporary and doesn't address the root cause of the wrinkles such as collagen loss, free radical damage, sun damage and environmental factors.  Don't be fooled by the anti-aging labels.  Unless there is an actual "active ingredient" such as retinol, the benefit is just moisture but nothing else.

B Vitamins Many forms of vitamin B (like B12) can only be absorbed in the small intestine, so no matter how much is loaded into your moisturizer or serum, it's not going to make a difference. "Vitamins like niacin can have an effect on the skin's texture and color, but your skin can't absorb them," Dr. Shah explains. If you really want to tap into the power of vitamin B to improve your skin's glow and appearance, stick to eating leafy greens like spinach, asparagus, beans, and peas.

Caffeine.  Much like a Starbucks Latte for your brain, caffeine in skin creams can give a boost to your skin, too. Until it wears off.  "Caffeine can temporarily reduce puffiness, especially around your eyes," explains Dr. Shah.  "But don't expect permanent results."

Botanical extracts are ingredients extracted from plants (flowers, roots, stems, trees, etc.) for use in skin care for everything from healing blemishes to reducing fine wrinkles. They have been used for centuries and have anecdotal purposes in many cultures. The issue: Botanical extracts need to remain on your skin in order to work. Dr. Shah explains that, “In cleansers, there is simply not enough contact time on your skin for any true anti-aging benefit to take place. Another issue is that most botanical extracts are water soluble, which means that the moment you wet your skin and begin to wash your face, they’re watered down and rendered useless.”

Collagen and elastin in anti-wrinkle products. Collagen and elastin in skin-care products can serve as good water-binding agents, but they cannot fuse with your skin's natural supply of these supportive elements. In most cases, the collagen molecule is too large to penetrate into the skin. But even when it is made small enough to be absorbed it cannot bind with the collagen existing in skin, and there isn't any research indicating otherwise.
