FDA Clears New Surgeon Inspired 3D Printing Device for Lumbar Fusion

FDA Approved Medical Device for Spinal Fusion

Partnering with Pioneers in Spine Medicine

Dr. Samuel Joseph, Jr. worked alongside medical device firm Osseus Fusion Systems to develop the newly FDA approved 3D printed Aries titanium spinal implants. The approval marks one of the largest FDA clearances for a family of 3D printed spinal devices of that kind.

By partnering with pioneers in the medical industry such as Osseus, Dr. Joseph can offer his expertise as an exceptionally trained spine surgeon to help develop new products and procedures. Combining cutting-edge research with new technology Joseph Spine may offer spine patients new hope for a pain-free life.

Surgeon Inspired Spinal Implants

“As a surgeon, it’s very exciting to participate in the device development process and see your ideas brought to life so quickly,” commented Dr. Joseph, founder of Joseph Spine. “Using 3D printing, we were able to go from design to prototype, to finished product much faster than with traditional manufacturing—which means patients get access to more advanced treatments sooner, too.”

“Osseus is unique in our ability to bring surgeon-inspired implants to market quicker than any competitor, and our focus on R&D delivers unparalleled performance and quality to our surgeons and patients,” said Eric Hansen, Co-Founder, and CEO of Osseus. Osseus’ newly approved Aries family of lumbar interbody fusion devices is, the company says, one of the most comprehensive groups of 3D printed devices in the spinal and orthopedic industries. The family, comprising of Aries-TS, Aries-TC, Aries-A, Aries-L and Aries-O offer implant solutions for lateral (LLIF), anterior (ALIF), straight and curved transforaminal (TLIF) and oblique (OLIF) procedures.

Aries Titanium Spinal Implants

The 3D printed devices are constructed from a highly porous titanium metal which has been optimized for bone integration and fusion. The creation of the implants has been enabled largely by Osseus’ proprietary 3D printing platform, PL3XUS. Interestingly, the company says its titanium implants are some of the most porous spinal implants out there, with porosity rates of 80% or higher.

Lumbar-Fusion-3d-printing-DeviceThe 3D printed medical devices also integrate a proprietary mesh lattice which acts to reduce stiffness and to maximize bone graft packability. In other words, the mesh lattice structure is specifically designed to encourage bone cell fixation and proliferation, ultimately resulting in faster recovery times after implantation.

The recent FDA clearance for its medical device family marks Osseus’ fourth FDA 510(k) clearance.

Touching film about breast cancer patient posing for artists reveals the anxiety of living with a changed body

Breast cancer survivor Marjut Keski-Korpi posed as an art model for nine artists. Portraits of Ihana Nainen (“lovely woman”) collection of portraits was turned into an exhibition showcasing the beauty that originates beyond a person’s physical attributes – personality, experiences and attitudes.

Changes in one’s body can be confusing and distressing. Many people diagnosed with breast cancer have to go through surgery that leaves a lasting memory of the disease. The human body is still a work of art, beautiful in so many ways, even though mind and body have undergone countless hardships

Students of the Free Art School in Finland discovered the overall beauty of a person by painting Marjut Keski-Korpi - a breast cancer survivor. Marjut had to go through a total mastectomy where her other breast was removed and replaced with an implant.

“Many seem to think that now I have beaten cancer, everything is fine. But there is so much more to it, than just the cancer - changes in self-image and everything it entails,” says Marjut. She voices that it is important to talk about the subject openly: “ I want to show that cancer is not something to be ashamed of. Nobody should hide themselves because of an illness.”

The Ihana Nainen portrait exhibition reflect both the artists’ encounter with Marjut as well as their personal experiences.
“This has been a very interesting project, which deals with the contradictions of life in a beautiful way. Beauty is not a simple construct, it is a multidimensional concept,” describes the principal of the Free Art School Paavo Paunu.

Watch the touching video of Marjut’s encounter with the artists here.

Arla Ihana participates in the Pink Ribbon fundraiser supporting cancer research. In addition to their donation, Arla Ihana wants to help raise awareness on the issue:

“Breast cancer affects one in eight women. The tough experiences do not have to diminish our inner nor outer beauty. Everyone is wonderful just the way they are. That is why we feel that it is important to also support the conversation around the topic,” states Betina Karvinen, Arla Ihana’s Brand & Category Manager.

After the exhibition, the portraits will be auctioned and the proceeds forwarded to cancer research.

Health change guru Marissa Costonis, Certified Health Coach, has developed the “5 Bites to Health” methodology, which is detailed in her new book, Change Bites, 5 Change Management Strategies to Transform Your Health. In just this first week, Change Bites reached #10 on Amazon Best Sellers in Business and Health! I’m happy to discuss review opportunities as well.

The “5 Bites to Health” process can be applied no matter how healthy someone eats today and regardless of how big or small a change. Here’s a summary:

  • Begin with the end in mind: Be clear on your vision of “perfect” health, why it’s important and what you will do with it once you have achieved it. Assessing your sense of urgency by asking, “why change now?” and focusing on the end result will keep you motivated throughout your transformation.
  • Go slow to go fast: While a few big changes may be helpful in the short-term to jump start your eating habits and health, improving each meal one bite at a time creates sustainable change that will last a lifetime.
  • Focus on the foods you can eat, not the ones you need to give up. Identify your “personal best foods” and all the ways to prepare them. Then, begin to incorporate these foods into a variety of meals and expand your palette from there.
  • Create food flexibility. For example, creating a set of ten simple recipe techniques that incorporate a variety of your personal best veggies gives you the skills and flexibility to make 100 different meals depending on what you have on-hand.
  • Celebrate your successes and look for other ways to use the process over and over to continue making positive changes to your diet and other areas of your life for a true health transformation. This change process can also be used to support a transition to non-toxic beauty and cleaning supplies or pesticides. It can even help in switching up workout routines!

ABOUT CHANGE BITES

Change Bites is the only book that provides readers with a step-by-step guide for how to change eating habits and health regardless of eating style, including vegan, paleo, gluten-free, and keto diets. This process exposes the pitfalls and challenges of a food change no matter how big or small. This unique methodology is the only one to implement proven change management best practices and tools used successfully with Fortune 500 organizations—which Costonis draws upon from her decade of experience leading global large-scale transformation projects for a management consulting practice.

ABOUT MARISSA COSTONIS

Marissa Costonis is the health change guru. She is owner of Change Bites, LLC and a Certified Health Coach by Institute for Integrative Nutrition who helps people make easy changes in their eating habits one bite at a time, whether food is the culprit or the cure. She spent over a decade in change management consulting leading a variety of change initiatives around the world. When she developed neuropathy and several health problems began to pile up, Costonis was forced to completely change her diet. Overwhelmed and confused, she began to apply all the leading change models and frameworks to simplify her own health transformation with great success. The “5 Bites to Health” process was born. Today Costonis conducts individual and group coaching programs, workshops and enjoys guest-speaking engagements to share her unique approach and support others in their journey to health.

Don't Miss the Signs of a Breaking Spine, Warns IOF

GENEVA, Oct. 19, 2018 /CNW/ - Osteoporosis, a disease which causes bones to become weak and fragile, is the cause of broken bones in approximately one in three women and one in five men aged over 50 worldwide.

(Photo: https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/767079/IOF_Infographic.jpg )

Spine (or 'vertebral') fractures are the most common osteoporotic fractures - with one new fracture estimated to occur every 22 seconds worldwide. Yet although they are a major cause of pain and long-term disability, up to 70 per cent of vertebral fractures don't come to clinical attention.

To mark World Osteoporosis Day on October 20th, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) urges adults to be on the alert for three signs of possible spine fractures: sudden, severe back pain; height loss of more than three centimeters (just over one inch); or stooped back.

IOF President, Professor Cyrus Cooper, stated: "Patients with sudden back pain are often simply prescribed pain killers and not properly assessed and treated for the underlying cause. Yet without preventive treatment, one spine fracture can initiate a cascade of more broken bones, which in turn lead to long-term pain and disability."

In fact, one in five women with a spine fracture will suffer another within twelve months, with serious impact on their quality of life. Anita, a patient from Sweden with a family history of osteoporosis, is a typical example. Anita sustained multiple spine fractures, with the third occurring when she had the flu and simply coughed. As a result, she has lost six centimetres in height, suffers from chronic pain, and had to give up her beloved job as a nurse.

Together with its 240-member organizations worldwide, IOF calls on health care professionals to address the under-reporting and under-treatment of spine fractures.

Professor Cooper added: "We advise radiologists who routinely perform X-rays to be on the lookout for vertebral fractures and to correctly report these as 'fractures'. Physicians too must do their part to ensure that once identified, patients benefit from appropriate treatment and management strategies, before further damaging and life-threatening fractures occur."

Fractures due to osteoporosis represent an enormous burden to healthcare systems and costs are predicted to rise markedly over the next few decades. IOF calls for the implementation of Fracture Liaison Services in hospitals worldwide - a critical step forward in reducing the human and economic costs of fragility fractures. Such services help ensure that a patient's first break is their last.

For World Osteoporosis Day, IOF has provided several new resources for patients and healthcare professionals. The One-Minute Osteoporosis Risk Test is also available to help adults identify their personal risk factors for osteoporosis.

Health care partnership in Mississauga wins provincial quality award

Cardiac patients leaving hospital sooner with more support in the home

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 18, 2018 /CNW/ - Trillium Health Partners (THP) and SE Health (SE) have been awarded the prestigious 2018 Minister's Medal Honouring Excellence in Health Quality and Safety. Presented by Robin Martin, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care on October 17, THP and SE were awarded this distinct honour for their innovative cardiac program known as Putting Patients at the Heart (PPATH).

The Minister's Medal is Ontario's most prestigious quality award, recognizing only three initiatives annually across the province. These award recipients are health care providers who have gone above and beyond to improve care for patients and families. This year's theme, Innovating Integration, honours innovative initiatives undertaken across Ontario that look to achieve better experiences for patients and providers, as well as better health outcomes with better value in health care delivery.

PPATH redesigned the care journey for cardiac surgery patients by streamlining and simplifying access to follow-up care for patients. It allows cardiac patients to return home sooner and with better supports.

PPATH brings together the hospital and home care, who act as one team providing seamless service to the patient and have the ability to share health information through a shared electronic health record. The innovative program has a dedicated 24 hour, seven day a week support line for patients to help them get timely answers to their questions after surgery without needing to visit their doctor or the emergency department. Patients are also supported by a community nurse, who can visit them at home to assess any symptoms or concerns and recommend next steps.

The innovative partnership program has provided patients with high quality care and an improved experience, while increasing hospital capacity and lowering heath system costs by reducing the length of stay.

QUICK FACTS:

  • Patients in the PPATH program are able to return home, on average, one day sooner following heart surgery. In addition to supporting patients' choice to recover at home, this frees up three hospital beds annually and thus creates better access to inpatient hospital care for patients who need it.
  • Patients report 96% satisfaction with the program and 98% would recommend the program to family and friends. This reflects the active involvement of patients in co-designing the service alongside THP and SE Health, ensuring it incorporates what matters most to them.
  • PPATH has resulted in a reduction in post-surgery emergency department visits by 33%, and hospital re-admission rates by 25%. Health system savings of $1.7 million were achieved over 2 years. 3.5 times more patients received community care.
  • In addition to receiving this year's Minister's Medal, the program has been recognized across Canada receiving the recent Canadian College of Health Care Leaders, 3M Health Care Quality Team Award – Improvement Across a Health System.

By engaging patients and caregivers and leveraging the core expertise of both community and hospital nurses, physicians, health leaders and professionals, we have achieved meaningful change in a simple, efficient and scalable way. PPATH is a great example of new partnerships working collaboratively to improve the patient experience and health outcome. Congratulations for your commitment to a seamless health system for our community, a key priority for the Mississauga Halton LHIN."
Mary Davies, Acting Board Chair, Mississauga Halton LHIN

"I was scared when I first left the hospital 5 days after open heart surgery, but I was so glad when I was home the second day. I still felt like I was in the hospital, I had so much help. The nurses supported me every step of the way through the PPATH program. I had done so well that at the end of the third week they said 'I don't think you need us here anymore; and they were right, I didn't."
Claire Scott, Patient, PPATH program
