In a World Full of Fad Diets, Americans Should Focus on Fiber
Quick – think of a fad diet. You can probably think of several right away. We know the names by heart, almost as a shorthand of quick weight loss options. Each of these diets are brands unto themselves, and thousands of Americans turn to them each day in an attempt to lose weight, and by extension, become healthier.
As we do so, we miss the forest for the trees. None of these diets – and there’s a new one every week – are as healthy a weight-loss alternative as simply adding fiber to your diet.
The Benefits of Fiber in Your Diet
On average, Americans eat 11 grams of fiber in their diet each day. But health organizations, ranging from the American Heart Association, the National Cancer Institute and the American Diabetes Association recommend a daily intake of 30 to 40 grams. There are many reasons for this recommendation.
First and foremost, fiber is critically important for heart health. Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health recommends an increase in soluble fiber – the kind that dissolves in water – to lower both glucose levels and cholesterol. Consider nuts, berries and even oatmeal in this category.
For digestive health, Harvard recommends an increase in your daily consumption of non-soluble fiber. Think of whole wheat bread, carrots, couscous, and legumes.
Finally, a recent study published by the L.A. Times notes that increasing fiber by just five grams a day led to a loss of nearly five pounds in participants.
An Easy Fiber Solution
So with so many benefits for a diet that’s high in fiber, why do so many Americans fall short? The answers vary, but for most, it comes down to one constant – time. Americans are constantly on the move, and taking the time to eat right is not always in the cards.
However, while there are healthy ways for even the busiest among us to get the fiber, and the health benefits that we need, many Americans may not want to do them. You can drop the potato chips and replace them with raw vegetables. Instead of drinking fruit juices, you can eat whole fruits instead. But the simplest change may be adding fiber supplements to your daily routine. There are many options, but only one was invented with cholesterol and heart health in mind – Cholesterade®.
Invented and patented by University of Florida scientist Dr. J. Robert Cade (also the inventor of Gatorade), Cholesterade® is an easy fiber solution, one that provides the benefits of both soluble and insoluble fiber. It even helps you lose weight. Take the time to learn more by visiting Cholesterade’s website today. Your heart and your waistline will be glad you did!
CordovaCann to purchase 4 million convertible preferred shares of NWN Inc.
Commercial cannabis sales utilizing NWN's technology expected in 2019
TORONTO, ONTARIO / ACCESSWIRE / September 17, 2018 / CordovaCann Corp. (CSE: CDVA) (OTCQB: LVRLF) ("Cordova" or the "Company"), a cannabis-focused consumer products company, is pleased to announce that it has signed a letter of intent (the "LOI") to form a strategic partnership with NWN Inc. ("NWN"). This new partnership will allow Cordova to license from NWN industry-leading cannabinoid technology and intellectual property for use in a number of U.S. jurisdictions currently served by Cordova. Furthermore, Cordova has also agreed to make a strategic investment in NWN by purchasing 4 million convertible preferred shares of NWN at a price of one Canadian Dollar ($1.00) per preferred share.
NWN is a privately-held Canadian company that is conducting research on the effects of cannabinoids to develop novel compilations and formulations of cannabis-derived products for global commercial use. NWN's intellectual property and product development initiatives are focused on the manufacturing of consistent cannabinoid derivative products. NWN also conducts research on the genetic properties of cannabis to develop genetically differentiated cannabis plants that improve yields and enhance specific attributes of cultivated flower.
Pursuant to the LOI, Cordova will make a strategic investment in NWN of four million Canadian Dollars to purchase 4 million convertible preferred shares of NWN at a price of one Canadian Dollar ($1.00) per preferred share (each, a "Preferred Share") for a total equity investment of approximately 10% of NWN on a fully diluted basis. Each Preferred Share shall be convertible to one common share of NWN, subject to appropriate adjustments for any stock splits, consolidations or other recapitalizations. Cordova's investment in NWN will be made in two tranches; a first tranche of 500,000 Preferred Shares immediately upon signing of the LOI and second tranche of 3.5 million Preferred Shares on or before December 31, 2018. Furthermore, NWN has granted Cordova a right of first refusal to participate in any future equity offerings of NWN. Cordova and NWN also have a common officer and director, Mr. Nathan Nienhuis, further strengthening the relationship.
The LOI also stipulates that NWN will grant Cordova a license to the technologies and intellectual property for production of NWN's genetically differentiated flower and the manufacturing and distribution of NWN's resulting cannabis derivative products that can be sub-licensed to the Company's third-party operating partners. This license will be granted on traditional commercial licensing terms. Cordova will initially hold exclusive licenses in the states of California, Colorado and Oregon. Furthermore, Cordova will also have rights to exclusive licenses in Nevada and Washington as Cordova develops a substantial presence in those markets, and the opportunity for other exclusive or non-exclusive licenses as Cordova enters additional markets globally.
"We believe uniform product consistency obtained by precise product formulation is critical for the cannabis industry globally in the coming years," stated Mr. Taz Turner, CEO of Cordova. "NWN is an industry leader in pursuing this strategy through its application of rigorous scientific research and its development of intellectual property. We are pleased that NWN has chosen to partner with Cordova to utilize its technology and IP in our markets and are excited to introduce these products in the coming year."
"NWN's technologies will result in a major competitive advantage for Cordova. The genetic technologies can produce cannabis plants with higher concentrations of active pharmaceutical ingredients, improving the quality of our products sold into the dried flower market and can significantly increase our cannabinoid yields for extraction. NWN's formulation technologies can assist in the manufacturing of uniformly consistent products across the spectrum of cannabinoid-derived products including vape liquids, distillates, concentrates, edibles and drinks. Furthermore, it is expected that NWN's intellectual property will be able to control the intensity, duration and other variables of the consumer experience. As the legal cannabis industry grows globally, consumers and patients are becoming more discerning about their purchases and there is a greater emphasis on controlled and responsible use of cannabis-related products," stated Mr. Turner.
"These licenses will allow Cordova to reduce its R&D budget significantly as the ongoing development of novel compilations and formulations of cannabinoids and cannabis genetic research will be funded and progressed by NWN. Furthermore, by investing in NWN, Cordova will retain an indirect ownership stake in any intellectual property that is created in the course of these developments and will have the ability to increase its ownership stake over time if we choose to do so," concluded Mr. Turner.
To be added to the Company's distribution list, please email cordova@kcsa.com with "Cordova" in the subject line.

The Kindness Advantage - Cultivating Compassionate And Connected Children
By Dale Atkins, PhD and Amanda Salzhauer, MSW
Greenwich, CT, September 19, 2018 — Kindness leads to compassion and happiness, future success, better relationships, improved self-esteem, and good mental and physical health. And don't we all want that for our children, our families and our community? The Kindness Advantage: Cultivating Compassionate and Connected Children provides parents with a practical and concrete guide to equip their child with the skills they need to have a positive influence on the world. This book goes well beyond teaching "please” and "thank-you.” It will show parents how to help their child form compassionate habits that will last a lifetime.
The Kindness Advantage is written by mental health professionals Dale Atkins and Amanda Salzhauer. Both experts are available to speak on topics that affect children and families to emphasize how to tap into kindness when dealing with such issues as bullying, school shootings, child welfare, community service, and the intergenerational divide. The Kindness Advantage is for parents who see the need for more civil, respectful, and considerate behavior among children. Research shows that children who are raised in a culture where giving and compassion are valued become happier and more positively engaged with those around them. Some of the characteristics in deeply connected people are empathy, acceptance, and questioning. These and other characteristics are essential to being kind and charitable, and vital to living a purposeful life.
First, The Kindness Advantage helps parents recognize these qualities; next, it shares ways to nurture them in everyday life. Finally, it shows parents how to teach them to their children. In Part Three there are additional chapters to support these efforts, with conversation starters, strategies to help children relax, tips for troubleshooting challenging situations, along with recommendations for adults and children interested in learning more. There are also several blank pages at the end of the book for taking notes, writing questions, and keeping track of resources with the hope that this book with turn into the family's personal activity workbook. Each fundamental characteristic includes an introduction along with:
1) Text to be read and discussed with the child.
2) Questions to help children connect the concept with their own life experience.
3) Ideas and activities to weave that concept into everyday life.
4) Inspiring real-life stories about children who make a difference.
5) Quotes from children, clergy, and community leaders and others about the values of caring and compassion.
The Kindness Advantage is based on a simple yet powerful premise: that living a compassionate life, one in which kindness is highly valued, is the key to our children's current and future wellbeing. There are so many ways to create meaningful connections with others. The Kindness Advantage is designed to be used in whatever way works best for families, giving their children the advantage of kindness to last a lifetime.

Judson Brewer MD PhD, author of The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits: "Dale Atkins and Amanda Salzhauer's book, The Kindness Advantage, can serve as a partial antidote to these turbulent times. They remind us that kindness is both a moral behavior that can improve the status of the world, but also be advantageous to the individual who practices kindness. The book's blend of significant and relevant issues in psychology, education, and humanism provides a myriad of practical suggestions to help us raise kind children. The book will serve as a resource to parents and educators. By teaching the components underlying kindness children can be provided a framework where we can both teach and weave these crucial lessons into the lives of children.
The section on relaxation, breathing, visualization and mediation is a gift to the children in our lives and ourselves. We cannot impart the lessons of kindness when we ourselves are agitated and distressed by the tumult in our lives and in our worlds. Likewise, children have difficulty being kind when they are in the grip of negative emotions. This section provides children and adults the tools to master negative emotions. We highly recommend this book to be read, saved and used as a long term resource in your child rearing library.”
Norma D. Feshbach, Ph.D. Professor, Chair, Interim Dean Emeritus UCLA, and
Laura E. Feshbach, Ph.D. in Child Clinical Psychology from University of Washington: "The Kindness Advantage is the perfect book. Building on scientific evidence about developing aspects of kindness, such as empathy, it gives clear, practical advice to parents and suggests engaging activities and stories for children. Nothing could be more important today than increasing compassion and decreasing polarization and acrimony. I am going to give this book to my son who has a young daughter.”
Dr. Susan Fuhrman, Ph.D., President Emerita, Teachers College Columbia University: "In times of discord and polarization, kindness is a family value that can often be overlooked and underestimated. But, in truth, few parental responsibilities carry more weight -- and bring more joy -- than teaching children the power of flexing their own kindness muscles. Steeped in research and brimming with practical tips, The Kindness Advantage provides parents with a blueprint for nurturing empathy in young children, while offering real-life stories that both instruct and inspire. This is a thoughtful guidebook for parents, caregivers, and any adults looking to help build happiness, raise good citizens, and create harmonious communities."
Myung Lee, Executive Director of Fund for Cities of Service: "The Kindness Advantage … is exactly what we need more of right now. With empowering examples and science-based truths, Dale and Amanda share what it takes to foster kindness, empathy, compassion, and heart in our families. Parents will learn how to take on social questions and connect in a way that will improve the lives of their children and help create a more nurturing world. Highly recommended!”
Amy McCready, Author and Founder, Positive Parenting Solutions: "This enormously insightful book provides an inspiring and fundamental blueprint on how kindness can and should be taught to children. It provides essential ways to have conversations with your children on how to be kind. The Kindness Advantage reinforces how considerate and kind behavior can be life-changing and life lasting for children to help make the world a better place.”
Laura Schroff, #1 New York Times and internationally bestselling author of An Invisible Thread:
"The Kindness Advantage is the ray of hope that we all need in this harsh, heavy, world. It is a blueprint of how to partner with the next generation to live our inherent values, to tap our organic ability to love, and to create a kinder culture. Many thanks to Dale Atkins and Amanda Salzhauer for bringing this much-needed gift to the world!”
Rev. Susan Sparks, Pastor, Comedian, and Author of Laugh Your Way to Grace: "As a physician who uses mindfulness practices extensively in working with patients, health care professionals, and people dealing with all varieties of stress, I love that this book incorporates those practices into a guide for parents who are teaching their children to be kind. The authors wisely lead with the evidence that kindness leads to greater happiness, meaning, and wellbeing, and then provide a myriad of inspirational examples and ideas for children and parents. Grandparents, who are often crucial inspirational figures in children's lives, may particularly benefit from ideas for intergenerational collaborations in kindness.”
Patricia A. Bloom, M.D., Certified Teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction;
Clinical Associate Professor of Geriatrics, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY: "With optimism and compassion, The Kindness Advantage offers practical tips and real-world examples parents and educators need to teach empathy, compassion, and kindness to our children. Along the way, it also provides opportunities to reflect on our values and experiences as adults. This book speaks to the innate desire of every child to be good to themselves and those around them. Dale Atkins and Amanda Salzhauer make the case for kindness as the tool to radically transform our children's lives, and our own.”
Naila Bolus, President & CEO, Jumpstart: "Just like we see in kids who have the empathy advantage, children who are raised with the kindness advantage are happier, connected, compassionate, and will have what they need to become change makers in their world. The Kindness Advantage offers parents the tools to teach these skills and more to their young children. With the extensive examples of activities provided in the The Kindness Advantage, parents can pick and choose what resonates with them to create a personalized approach to bringing kindness into their everyday lives.”
Michele Borba, Ed.D., author of UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World: "It is through kindness that we find inner peace, and understanding of our humanity, our interconnectedness. Thank you Dale Atkins and Amanda Salzhauer for gifting us with The Kindness Advantage, a guide to share this most powerful and important tool with our children.”
Janet Slom, MFA, founder, Mindfulness-Based Self Expression: "The Kindness Advantage provides practical wisdom and good-sense guidance to help you scaffold your child's journey toward goodness of heart. This book is a gift which has arrived at the perfect time for our world.”
Amishi Jha, Ph.D., Neuroscientist and Researcher: "Before we expect kindness from others, we have to nurture it in ourselves. Thanks to The Kindness Advantage we now have the recipe to raise children that better the world not because of what they have done, but because of who they are. And, in the process, we can learn to become kinder people in an often divisive and complicated world.”
Future Health Index, Commissioned by Philips, Identifies Key Recommendations for Better Health Information Exchange to Drive Value in Healthcare
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 20, 2018 /CNW/ - Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG) (AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today released a new Future Health Index (FHI) report "Moving data to the heart of health systems: Increasing vital technology adoption to make value-based healthcare a reality ." The research focused on two technology enablers that have the potential to advance integration, and enable data to be used more effectively. Digital identity tools, such as Electronic Health Records (EHRs), based on standardized data and protocols that can be accessed, used and updated by care providers across the health continuum, can make the collection and exchange of healthcare data much easier. Data analytics and AI can mine that data for connections and insights that will benefit both healthcare professionals and patients. This ranges from the identification of health trends at the level of an entire population, to more precise diagnosis, treatment and after care for individual patients.
The latest FHI report identifies the following key recommendations for the way in which health data is collected, shared and used, in order for countries to meet their goals of driving better value in healthcare:
- Strike the right balance in data protection and (de)regulation
- Foster adoption through education - only 47% of healthcare professionals surveyed and 24% of the general population felt knowledgeable about connected care technologies
- Secure buy-in through co-creation of solutions together with healthcare professionals and the general population
- Harmonize data collection and use practices - countries with universal EHRs have a higher Value Measure than countries without universal EHRs (47.29 on average vs 39.67), as well as higher average levels of trust (67.79 vs. 62.99)
"The Future Health Index's latest report shows that the smooth exchange of health information is central to delivering better value in healthcare," said Jan Kimpen, Chief Medical Officer for Philips. "By connecting people, data and systems we can create a network that allows information to flow seamlessly across care providers, locations and systems. It is through data that the outcomes that define value are tracked, measured and improved. Yet, health systems around the world are still struggling to collect, organize, analyze and use health data in a meaningful way. The recommendations made in the FHI are designed to address these very challenges and provide actionable next steps that healthcare leaders can take to optimize the value provided by the digital tools they are investing in."
FHI is a research-based platform designed to help determine the readiness of countries to address global health challenges and build sustainable, fit-for-purpose national health systems. Using the real-life learning of experts in the field, and insights uncovered in research, the FHI provides actionable recommendations for the healthcare industry; particularly around the adoption and implementation of crucial digital tools that can deliver more affordable, integrated and sustainable care. A key finding of the FHI is that integrating connected care technology into health systems can accelerate countries along the path to value-based healthcare.

Herbals & Naturals Seeing Increased Use Across Largest Consumer Health Markets Globally According to New Nicholas Hall Group Report
LONDON, Sept. 19, 2018 /CNW/ - Consumers in some of the largest healthcare markets globally are increasingly turning to herbal & natural medicines and supplements, fuelling a huge boom in sales of Herbals & Naturals, according to a new report from The Nicholas Hall Group.
The new Herbals & Naturals report found that 9 markets (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, USA) together added US$1,564mn in net sales in 2017, with China and USA the largest contributors. The combined Herbals & Naturals category in these markets totalled $33bn in 2017, growing by 5.0%, well ahead of growth of allopathic medicines at just 3.0%.
Some of the factors driving this growth include health & wellness climbing up the list of consumer priorities and herbal & natural options gaining prominence thanks to being suitable for children and perceived as safer than allopathic options. With medicated ingredients increasingly scrutinised and restricted, consumer concerns have risen about the safety of conventional medicines. Herbals & naturals have an increasing reputation for efficacy, with scientific studies / clinical backing enhancing the standing of many H&N brands.
Probiotics form the single fastest-growing category among Herbals & Naturals (averaging +11% a year since 2013), driven by rising awareness of benefits, consumer focus on prevention, expansion into new niches and increasing segmentation. Positioning of many probiotics has evolved beyond well-established gastrointestinal health and immunity benefits into multiple areas, including women's health, mother & baby, metabolic, stress, healthy ageing, etc. Options for children are proving particularly popular.
Other growth areas include herbal & natural cough remedies (averaging +8% growth a year) and topical analgesics (+7% a year). Herbal & natural cough is enjoying a surge in demand, helped by safety concerns over allopathic options and restrictions placed on certain ingredients (DXM, codeine); plenty of launch activity, with ivy extract, thyme and honey the key growth segments. Among pain gels & rubs, the efficacy of herbal & natural formulations is highlighted, many brands relying on trusted heritage, with celebrity endorsement critical in markets like Japan and USA. Menthol and camphor are common and popular ingredients, alongside methyl salicylate, comfrey, capsaicin and arnica. China is dominated by TCMs, India by ayurvedic remedies, while homeopathics are significant in Europe and USA.

BENEFITS OF A MONTH LONG “BOOZE BREAK”
REHAB EXPERT EXPLAINS WHAT SOCIAL DRINKERS CAN EXPECT
WWW.BEACHWAY.COM

If you’re thinking about taking a post summer break from booze -do it. You may get turned onto a whole new mindset about how you choose to consume alcohol. We connected with Rehab Expert, Carrie Carlton, Clinical Director (LCSW) of Beachway Therapy Center in Boynton Beach, Florida; who offered us numerous benefits of taking a “Booze Break.” Studies have shown that a month-long respite from alcohol can significantly benefit one’s mental and physical health. Here’s why...
- Do the math! Less booze means more cash.
According to Fortune magazine in 2018, thanks to the “craft cocktail trend” the overall price for alcoholic beverage and therefor the general cost of alcohol has increased. Let’s say you hit a happy hour twice weekly and bought a round of drinks for 3 people at $15-$20 each, with tip that could be between $80 and $100. More if you are in major metropolitan cities. Then multiply that by twice per week for weeks in a month and you’re saving close to $400 per month just on after work happy hours. Add more money saved if you’re also a weekend social drinker. Add way more money if you’re buying bottles in the VIP for hundreds of dollars.
“People are often amazed at how much free cash they have to put towards other things they want to do such as paying down debt, vacations, car repairs, gym memberships, upgrades to their homes, etc., explains Carrie Carlton of Beachway Therapy Center, one of the most comprehensive Rehab programs on the East Coast.
- Wow! Your face looks great! What have you done?
While alcohol doesn’t directly cause acne it certainly messes with hormone levels and immune function which then lead to sallow skin, breakouts and puffy, flushed complexion. If you’re they type who can easily “Rose all day” and love mixed drinks featuring more sugar, syrups and other additives; you’ll quickly see a major change to the texture and tone to your skin. “It’s always great to snap selfies in the same room with the same light so you can really see the difference. Also pay attention to compliments. There will be a visible difference, encourages Carlton.”
- Are you losing weight? YES!
A study in the journal of Obesity said that people who don’t drink eat less simply because alcohol heightens the senses. It makes the sauce and cheese on that pizza or those late-night bites all the more delicious. When you remove alcohol intake it diminishes your calorie intake. Think about 3 beers or glasses of wine at about 150 each. Those calories add up. “Your blood sugar and cholesterol levels start to really improve, and since alcohol dehydrates the body’s organs, taking a break from booze with help the body function better overall,” explains Carlton.
- You’re more energetic, creative focused and are getting a lot more done.
One of the other benefits of opting to go booze-free for a month is that you’ll notice you’re not sluggish. You’re no longer fading in the afternoon or hitting the snooze 3 times in the morning. You are clear and focused on what you want to accomplish in the day and you have the ability to follow through with a better mood. You’ll be able to concentrate on tasks which also helps you stimulate the part of your brain where memory takes place. This keeps us sharp as we age.
- More you time and new friends!
Often when we make a major change to our lives like choosing to lay off alcohol for a month our crew of cohorts changes. This frees up time for you to focus on you. Self care is important and often neglected when going out to socialize over drinks is the norm. When you’re no longer invited out to drink away the work day, you’re now free to get an after work fitness class in, take a workshop, listen to some audio books and check out a cool lecture. You start to realize there is plenty to do that doesn’t involve liquor and you start to meet new friends to do these things with.
“What’s interesting to note is that people who consider themselves “social drinkers” experience these improvements within a few days. People who struggle with alcoholism may actually cause more harm to themselves if they just decide to stop drinking cold turkey. Because there are many social drinkers teetering on the line of having a “drinking problem” given they tend to binge on the weekends with casual drinks with dinner mid-week; committing to going without alcohol may reveal there actually is a bigger issue going on. If someone can’t last a week without alcohol and feels nausea, gets terrible headaches, sweats, and are physically shaky and ill, consulting a doctor would be an important next step,” cautions Carrie Carlton.
- What It Does For Your Liver
As much as people might want to believe that taking a vacation from drinking makes up for the excess, Carrie Carlton says it’s simply not true. Excessive boozing and “drying out” for a month won’t even out the score with your liver. A month-long hiatus won’t heal your liver — which processes the sugar in alcohol and can be damaged by excessive drinking. Are you really “healing your liver”? No, though you are taking a month off from causing it any more damage.

Can Plastic Surgery Make You Look Older?
Expert Plastic Surgeon with Tips and Dish on Celebrity Inspiration
www.drmanishshah.com
According to expert Board-Certified Plastic surgeons, the goal of cosmetic surgery is to make a woman like look a refreshed, enhanced version of herself. While many seek cosmetic surgery to turn back the clock; (a respectable, personal choice) there is a downside. The eerie expressionless, puffy, distorted, look that makes people appear even older than they are. To help us understand and achieve a more maintained, elegant look, we tapped the expertise of Board-Certified Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. Manish Shah.
Most Common Culprit… Too Much Filler
According to Dr. Shah, the best way to begin is to look at photos of the person decades younger to assess their aging progression and facial symmetry. “You want to look at the facial features to see where there is drooping or volume loss as not to run the risk of over filling the face. When too much filler is used, facial balance is thrown off.”
Dr. Shah explains that today we’re seeing young women in their 20’s trying to look like they’re photo filtered in real life. “They start Botox too young, or overfill their lips, breasts, and derrieres. The odd consequence is that that end up looking older. There are several celebrities who are under 25 and look 30, and 35 due to the work they’ve had done. The lips and cheeks are often the first facial features to be overdone in younger patients.”
Facial Breakdown
Cheeks: Dr. Shah says, that “Over-suctioning cheeks through liposuction can make you look older. Stiffness or "puffy cheeks" can also occur if there is unnecessary fat transfer or filler injections are overdone.”
Brows: A highly arched eye brow, or a brow without any arch can instantly age you. “Getting the eyebrow height perfect to achieve a natural look is one of the most challenging techniques plastic surgeons face with Botox, be sure to find someone who specializes in brow area Botox.”
Chin: “The overall balance of your face can be thrown off if a chin implant is too large,” says Dr. Shah. He adds, “Facial structure goes from more of a heart shape to a square shape. Also, the softness of your face gets lost.”
Neck: Removing too much fat from the neck can result in an excessive deep and sharp angle that gives more of a harsh look.
Midface: Some women get a facelift before it's needed. Think of many of the stars of Bravo’s Real Housewive’s franchise. “When it’s unnecessary or not done properly, the underlying facial tissues give an unnatural fullness in the cheeks that makes the face look aged, explains Dr. Shah.”
Eyes: Fat removal under the eyes is popular in younger patients. The problem is that removing too much fat can really make a patient look hollower rather than refreshed.
Injectable Toxins: The Frozen Look
Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are all effective in reducing lines by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles to stop movement. Problems arise when they are overdone. The face can look very severe and certain facial features can become exaggerated. It is strange to see a woman over 50 with fewer forehead and brow mobility than a pre-teen!
Dr. Shah offers a tip and reminds us that injectable toxins are not permanent, and the result will fade away in time. “It’s best to let the product completely wear off before getting injectable toxins applied to the face again. It’s always best to start off with much less because you can always work your way up to more,” he advises.
Too Large Breast Implants:
Implants that do not fit a woman’s frame and are overexaggerated, are never a good idea at any age. The older a woman gets, the more this is going to scream, “look at me” and be incongruous with the rest of her appearance. Jane Fonda is a perfect example of a woman in her 80’s with implants that match her body in a flattering way.
Ignoring Your Hands and Décolleté:
So many women make the mistake of obsessing over their face, legs, derriere, breasts, and abdomen that they completely forget their hands and décolleté. The latter are a dead giveaway of age, no matter how young the rest of you looks.
Examples of Elegance:
According to Dr. Shah, here's who he feels has “gotten it right” when it comes to aging gracefully whether they have had plastic surgery or not include, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Katie Couric, Raquel Welch, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kris Jenner, Naomi Campbell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jayne Seymour, Ellen DeGeneres, Sharon Stone, and Padma Lakshmi. Use these celebs for inspiration when contemplating cosmetic enhancements.

The Teachable Moment of Brett Kavanaugh and His Sexual Assault
Dr. Laura Berman, leading sex therapist, available to comment on issues of consent, trauma and talking to teens about these topics
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl when they were both in high school. His accuser came forward with her allegations in 2012, and then again in the wake of his nomination for the highest court in the land.
“Professor Christine Blasey Ford first made her sexual trauma at the hands of Brett Kavanaugh known when she was in a couples’ therapy with her husband,” says Dr. Laura Berman, leading sex educator, New York Times bestselling author, radio host and frequent television guest. “As a couples’ therapist, I have encountered similar discussions many times. Trauma from past sexual assaults haunt the victim long after their accuser has moved on, and it can severely impair their relationships and marriages even decades into the future.”
As devastating as such experiences can be, Dr. Berman says there is a silver lining when cases such as Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh hit the news.
“What an amazing opportunity for a teachable moment for teens,” says Dr. Berman, who wrote the groundbreaking guidebook Talking to Your Kids about Sex. “As a sex educator and a mother of three myself, I always find that stories like this create the perfect space for me to talk to young people about issues like consent, bodily autonomy and also alcohol use. The teen years are the first time most young people try alcohol or drugs for the first time, and it is also the time they make their first forays into sexual activity, so it is absolutely imperative that we have conversations about these issues in a cohesive, comprehensive manner.”
Dr. Berman says the best way to talk to your kids about these topics is to keep it simple, and to listen more than you talk. “Be open to hearing their opinion and learning about what is happening in their worlds,” says the sex therapist. “When you do speak, do so in clear, concise way, such as by saying ‘A person cannot consent if they are under the influence, and even one drink can make a person impaired and unable to consent.’ Encourage them to be that voice of clarity and conscience among their friends, and to always come to you with any concerns. Say something like ‘No matter what the situation, even if you drank or did drugs or something else you are afraid to tell me, if you or someone you know was touched against your will or harmed in anyway at a party, that takes precedent over everything. I will not punish you for coming to me for help.’”
