Canadian Medical Protective Association calls for system-wide change to improve physician wellness

OTTAWA, Aug. 22, 2018 /CNW/ - The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) addressed the need for system-wide change and greater investment in physician wellness at its annual Information Session on August 22 in Winnipeg. The session entitled "Healthier physicians: An investment in safe medical care" assembled a panel of distinguished speakers to extend the critical conversation about improving physician wellness and reducing burnout.

Healthcare is facing a crisis of well-being, with large numbers of physicians reporting one or more symptoms of professional burnout. Physician burnout has been linked to increased healthcare system costs, adverse outcomes, and medical-legal events. CMPA data shows that, over the past five years, College and hospital complaints have risen by more than 20%. Burnout may be associated with this increase.

Physician burnout is the "canary in the coalmine" and indicates problems with the work environment. Speakers discussed the systemic causes of burnout, which include excessive workloads, increased administrative demands, high patient volumes, and inadequate institutional support. The panel stressed that, since there are so many factors contributing to burnout, there needs to be a collective response and coordinated effort from all major Canadian healthcare stakeholders in responding to the problem.

"Supporting physician wellness must be a shared responsibility," said Dr. Hartley Stern, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the CMPA. "The CMPA will continue to support physicians during some of their most difficult times. However, to truly effect change, all healthcare stakeholders have to recognize the problem of burnout and invest in solutions."

The CMPA has set out recommendations outlining ways in which major Canadian stakeholders can promote physician wellness. Evidence shows that investing in physician health will lead to a safer, more productive, and lower cost healthcare system. The CMPA is committed to helping physicians respond to stress and working with other stakeholder organizations to improve physician health.

Additional information and resources on the subject of physician wellness are available on the Association's website.

BELLY BLOATING: DOC SHARES WHAT TO EAT AND WHAT TO AVOID

Regardless of weight or body type, it’s common to see some belly bloat. The foods we choose, how we’re digesting and simply the air we’re swallowing, can all add up to feeling and looking bloated.

To help us keep our bellies as bloat free as possible, is Dr. Niket Sonpal, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, Board Certified in Internal Medicine specializing in gastroenterology, digestive health and nutrition, who shares what to eat and what to avoid and why.

“It’s really important to pay attention to bloat, especially when it either comes on suddenly or is prolonged with pain. It is possible to develop an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine which gives that distended belly and full feeling,” explains Dr. Sonpal.

The discomfort caused by bloating is a fixable issue. Watching the choices you are making and the way your body is reacting to them is key.

According to Dr. Sonpal, here are some foods to steer clear of when it comes to banishing the bloat.

  1. Simple Carbs

The general population is aware that foods like soft drinks, sweets, desserts, and white bread are not conducive to a healthy diet. Simple carbs are processed into the bloodstream very quickly and have little nutritional value other than the energy they add to your body. When there is an overflow of energy being stored in your body versus what you are burning you begin to gain weight and feel bloated.

  1. Processed starches

Limiting pasta or bread to a once per week treat can really make an impact when addressing bloat. These foods are like sponges when it comes to water.

When you cut starches, you’ll notice bloat minimizes pretty quickly.

  1. Sugar substitutes and faux sweeteners

Here’s the catch, you may think you’re doing the right thing by opting for “fat-free” or “sugar-free” food options that say they are “derived from real sugar.” Dr. Sonpal clarifies that these kinds of sugars are actually low-digestible carbohydrates. Our bodies metabolize them differently due to their chemical structure leaving them hanging around in our small intestine leading to bloat.

  1. Raw cauliflower (and other uncooked cruciferous vegetables).

Cauliflower has become the “it” vegetable because it takes on the flavor of anything it’s mixed with. We see recipes for cauliflower mashed, cauliflower pizza, fried “rice,” and even mac and cheese; all created with cauliflower as the main ingredient. When cooked, these vegetables are great sources of nutrition and fine side dish substitutes for pasta, rice, and potatoes. However, when cauliflower is chopped up and eaten raw along with kale, broccoli and brussels sprouts you can expect bloating to occur. Cooking is key!

  1. Salt

If you want to reduce water retention which always leads to a bloated stomach, cut out the salt. In fact, if you have a lunchtime meal you can significantly reduce the bloat and puffiness simply by avoiding salty foods for the remainder of the day. People who are mindful of their salt intake, prepare their own foods and avoid things like canned soups, chips, bacon, sausage, lunch meats will look and feel leaner.

What not to fear:

  1. Ripe Bananas!

What’s not to love about bananas. You can grab one on the go, they are high in potassium which is another thing that rids water retention.

  1. Cucumbers

They’re known to reduce swelling and given they contain the flavonoid antioxidant, quercetin. Cool crisp and delicious they’re common to salads and they can also be eaten solo as a snack. You can also add them to water.

  1. Watermelon

Chunks of watermelon are low calorie and filled with water (over 90%) and very low sugar.

Watermelons are mostly water — about 92 percent — but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. There's even a modest amount of potassium.

  1. Fermented Foods

Kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles, and kombucha. These high probiotic, bacteria-friendly fermented foods are key to maximizing digestion and maintaining a healthy gut.

  1. Drink water and green tea!

Since carbonated beverages contribute to bloat stick to water and flavored teas. Sipping on these beverages throughout the day keeps the digestive system moving. When you are water deprived your body will hold on to the water already in your body without excretion leading to appearing bloated.

Things to avoid when dealing with belly bloat include:

  1. Drinking from a straw

The mechanisms of straws make it so that you suck air in to take sips of your drink. An excess of this can fill you up with air and cause bloating.

  1. Sleeping right after eating

Many people get drowsy right after a meal. The best course of action is to go for a walk or do something that gives you a bit of energy and helps your body process your meal. Going to bed right after eating cripples your digestive process, slowing down the breakdown of your food.

  1. Eating Too Rapidly

If you find yourself struggling with bloating observing the pace at which you eat can help reduce the amount of air you intake while consuming the foods you love. Generally taking more time to enjoy your meal.

PDVSA recovers operatorship of Caribbean facilities alleviating export bottlenecks, says GlobalData

Following the recent announcement of ConocoPhillips and PDVSA agreement over a US$2bn legal arbitration that had led to the seizure of PDVSA assets in the Caribbean, Adrian Lara, Senior Oil & Gas Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view on the impact on the upstream sector:

“Recovering these Caribbean assets thanks to the agreement with Conoco, means PDVSA can load export cargoes at a faster pace and avoid bottlenecks that were already slowing down field production. Right now maximizing the level of exports is key in securing any revenue Venezuela can receive. Even if these cargoes pay for previous loans or barter for refined products shipments not having any issues in exporting whatever volume is available is crucial.

“However this does not mean the production decline in the country will stop since the rig activity and the field services are practically at their minimum or non-existent in some fields. The increased need for diluent to blend Orinoco Belt crude has also increased the operating expenditure of producing each barrel; currently most assets have a barely positive or negative post-tax cash flow.

“Furthermore, even at lower levels of oil production, exports to Asia will surely need to continue due to previous agreements in paying for loans. Indeed this reduces the available volume that can be sent to the US gulf coast refineries where heavy crude, such as the diluted crude from the Orinoco Belt, not only has a constant demand but means actual cash payments for PDVSA.

“With decreasing Mexican heavy crude exports and Canadian heavy oil sands still having logistic restrictions, the gulf refineries are a safe outlet for Venezuelan crude, if PDVSA manages to deliver its diluted crude there instead of Asia, we can see a relative stable level of exports to the US. However, all this ultimately depends on stabilizing the country’s decline which is proving to be very difficult.”

Recent measles outbreaks in 21 states and the District of Columbia are causing a new stir surrounding vaccines, and the choice of many parents not to vaccinate. In his new book, How to End the Autism Epidemic, autism advocate J.B. Handley dives into the scientific research linking vaccines to immune activation events in the brain. However, unlike many other activists, Handley does not advocate to stop vaccinations. Instead he is a proponent for testing children before they are given the shots.

"Since the early 1980's, the number of vaccines given to children has nearly quadrupled, and the autism rate has gone up more than 30,000 percent during the same time period. For American children, the current autism rate is 1 in 36. This epidemic is real," says Handley.

What The Book Is About

· Tells the story of Handley's own family and their journey through autism. Handley's son Jamison began developing symptoms associated with autism around two months old, after his first round of vaccinations.

· Breaks down autism recovery and the current research that supports faster diagnosis and treatment

· Dives into the current scientific research, analyzing herd immunity, vaccinations and immune activation events

COMPASS Pathways Receives FDA Approval for Psilocybin Therapy Clinical Trial for Treatment-resistant Depression

LONDON, Aug. 22, 2018 /CNW/ - COMPASS Pathways, a life sciences company dedicated to accelerating patient access to evidence-based innovation in mental health, has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a clinical trial in psilocybin therapy for treatment-resistant depression. Regulatory approvals for the trial have already been given in the UK, the Netherlands and Canada.

(Logo: https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/733890/COMPASS_Pathways_Logo.jpg )

The trial is a phase IIb dose-ranging study with 216 patients taking part in 12 to 15 research sites across Europe and North America. It will begin in the UK later this month and sites in other countries will join the trial as further regulatory approvals are received.

Psilocybin therapy combines a dose of psilocybin (a psychoactive medicine and the active ingredient in "magic mushrooms") with psychological support, and has shown promising signals of efficacy and safety as treatment for depression in academic studies in the UK and US. If the trial is successful, it will be followed by phase III studies.

George Goldsmith, Chairman and Co-founder of COMPASS Pathways, said, "We are excited to be starting this landmark trial which has the potential to transform lives. Depression is the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide, and treatment-resistant depression affects more than 100 million people. It is a huge unmet need and the trial will teach us more about how this new approach might address it."

Ekaterina Malievskaia, Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of COMPASS, said: "The design of this study has been a truly collaborative effort, with scientists, clinicians, patient representatives and regulators from Europe and North America working together with the goal of helping patients suffering with treatment-resistant depression."

About COMPASS Pathways

COMPASS Pathways is a life sciences company, founded in 2016 to accelerate patient access to evidence-based innovation in mental health. We are developing psilocybin therapy through a late-stage clinical trial in Europe and North America for patients with treatment-resistant depression. The Temple Athletic Co. invites you to join their community in telling their story, to educate and to provide the consumer with a healthy sportswear alternative.

Good for your body. Good for the planet. Locally made.

Temple Athletic products will be offered at a ‘pre-order promotional rate’ starting August 22nd on Kickstarter. All customers will also receive unlimited access to a media library curated by Temple Athletic Brand Ambassadors providing the most current information about diet, health and exercise direct from the health & fitness community.
