Rosacea may be a visible warning marker for hidden, potentially serious diseases

VANCOUVER, March 13, 2018 /CNW/ - Canadians who have rosacea should be aware of associations between the disease and increased risk for a variety of disorders - many with potentially serious consequences – in order to detect these diseases at the earliest stage, according to Dr. Jason Rivers, a Vancouver dermatologist and president of the not for profit Acne and Rosacea Society of Canada.

An analysis(1) published early this year showed the highest associations with rosacea were diseases in 4 categories: cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological and autoimmune. Recent studies have shown those with rosacea have higher risks for:

  • Cardiovascular disease – 4 times higher
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - 4 times
  • Crohn's disease - almost 3 times
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - 2 times
  • Celiac disease - 2 times
  • Type 2 diabetes - 2.5 times

People with rosacea also have a 10 times higher risk of food allergies, 7.5 times greater risk of urogenital diseases (affecting the urinary tract or reproductive organs) and 4 times elevated risk for respiratory diseases.

"These studies show association but do not demonstrate cause," says Dr. Rivers. "For example, rosacea is not caused by these conditions nor do these conditions cause rosacea. These studies show that these disorders tend to co-exist together where if you have one, you have a higher chance of having the other."

The role of inflammation – the immune system's response to potential threat or harm - appears to be a common thread. Rosacea, affecting 3 million Canadians, is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by facial redness, pimples and sometimes irritated eyes. Inflammation is thought to play a role in these cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological and autoimmune diseases.

"Inflammation present in these other conditions is hidden within the body," Dr. Rivers added. "However, rosacea appears on the skin making it a visible marker of inflammation that may be helpful as a warning sentinel for these other conditions."

An important consideration for those with rosacea is that being at risk for these conditions does not mean he or she will go on to develop any of these disorders. "Disease development is different for everyone. Family history, personal history, age, gender, environment, lifestyle and other factors all play a role in disease development," he adds.

"However, simply being aware of the associations of rosacea and elevated risk for these potentially serious conditions can help with early detection, diagnosis and treatment," said Dr. Rivers.

Merging Exceptional Dental Hygiene with Impeccable Style
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 12 March 2018; The world’s biggest beauty tech brand, FOREO, has just launched the toothbrush of the future -  the ISSA 2, a sonic electric toothbrush that combines state-of-the-art technology with unparalleled durability: a one-hour charge lasts up to an incredible 365 uses. Setting a new global standard for advanced oral care, the revolutionary, new generation toothbrush has become a firm favorite of the who’s who of lifestyle bloggers and it doesn’t stop there -  the award-winning ISSA’s influence even extends to outer space, and in 2017 it made a cameo appearance in Episode 5 of Star Trek: Discovery.
An ultra-hygienic alternative to both manual brushing and conventional nylon-bristled electric toothbrushes, ISSA 2 differs from traditional models by way of its material; medical-grade silicone. In addition to the standard version with the hybrid brush head made of nylon and silicone combination , ISSA 2 is also available in an exclusive “Sensitive” Set which includes one hybrid brush head and one brush head made completely out of silicone for those with specially sensitive gums.
Providing a comfortable and secure grip on the brush’s ergonomic handle, the material presents several key advantages:
  • Soft, flexible brush head reaches all corners of the mouth
  • Quick-drying, non-porous and 100% waterproof
  • Resists the buildup of bacteria for up to 10,000x less bacteria than nylon-bristled toothbrushes
  • Soft silicone bristles are gentle on gums and won’t scratch tooth enamel
Designed to be used like a manual toothbrush, the ISSA 2 does not oscillate like conventional electric models. Instead it incorporates T-Sonic technology to pulsate at a frequency of 11,000 pulsations per minute for micro-sweeps that effectively, yet gently, clean teeth and massage gums. A superior brushing experience for a whiter, brighter smile, ISSA 2 removes plaque for total oral care and is particularly suited to those with sensitive gums, or for whom erosion of tooth enamel is a concern.
Like all FOREO devices, ISSA 2 comes with integrated and smart Swedish design. Its features include:
  • 16 variable speeds, as well as a built-in timer to prevent over-brushing.
  • Rechargeable via USB, lasts up to 365 uses.
  • Ideal for traveling: travel lock feature and no bulky charging dock to transport.
  • Savvy oral health investment: ISSA 2’s hybrid brush head lasts for 6 months before needing to be replaced, while the sensitive 100% silicone one lasts for the whole year

Stylish and chic, ISSA 2 by FOREO also looks the part, and is available in four striking colors to brighten up any bathroom surface, with the Sensitive set coming in two vibrant colors.
FOREO CEO Paul Peros said; “With the ISSA 2, we sought to offer a brand new way of cleaning teeth that feels completely unique compared to anything else out there. From its state-of-the-art material to its revolutionary design, ISSA 2 remains a truly watershed product in a market that had seen little in the way of innovation for far too long. Star Trek got it right - the ISSA 2 is very much the toothbrush of the future.”
ISSA 2 is just one of FOREO’s expanding and innovative range of skincare and dental devices. Established in 2013, the Swedish brand enjoys global success and has won more than 85 design and beauty awards internationally. The ISSA 2 and the ISSA 2 Sensitive Set is available now at www.foreo.com for $169-$189.

Brainwaves show how exercising to music bends your mind

Headphones are a standard sight in gyms and we’ve long known research shows listening to tunes can be a game-changer for your run or workout.

Back in 2012, Brunel University London’s Costas Karageorghis likened music to a legal, performance-enhancing drug, cheating tiredness and sparking feel-good vibes.

But the precise brain mechanisms music triggers during exercise are less understood. That’s because monitoring technology is easily tricked by body movements, so scientists couldn’t know if the results would be the same outside the lab.

Now researchers have used portable electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring with interference shielding technology to measure three types of brainwaves during exercise. This lets them compare the brain’s electrical feedback while exercising outdoors to music, a podcast, or no soundtrack at all.

They found music rearranges the brain’s electrical frequency, causing a drop in focus but enhancing enjoyment 28% more than silence and 13% more than a podcast.

“The EEG technology facilitated measurement during an ecologically-valid outdoor task, so we could finally explore the brain mechanisms that underlie the effects of music during real-life exercise situations”, said Brunel psychophysiologist Marcelo Bigliassi.

Walker wearing portable EEG device

Setting their own pace, 24 people walked 400m on an outdoor track to either a six-minute blast of Happy by Pharrell Williams, a TED Radio Hours talk about cities, or no sounds at all. Researchers used psychological scales to measure how good the walkers felt, what they focussed their attention on, how pepped or alert they felt and how tired they felt. Simultaneously they used EEG measurements and analysing software to plot their brainwaves across different band frequencies such as lower-alpha, upper-alpha, sensorimotor rhythm and beta.

Picture1

Music distracted the walkers’ focus, but boosted their energy levels and enjoyment more than the TED podcast and not listening to anything. The podcast didn’t affect the walkers’ perceptual responses, such as how tired they felt, or their affective responses, such as how happy they felt. But it made them enjoy walking more than without a soundtrack. The study says the brain mechanisms behind these effects appear to be linked to a boost in beta frequencies in the frontal and frontal-central regions of the cortex.

“We showed that music has the potential to increase beta waves and elicit a more positive emotional state,” said Bigliassi. “This can be capitalised upon during other forms of exercise and render a given activity more pleasurable. People who struggle to engage in physical activity programmes should select appropriate pieces of music to exercise and see The Way It Makes You Feel.”

Azrieli Foundation and Brain Canada launch grant program to develop the next generation of talent in Canadian brain research

MONTREAL, Feb. 14, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Today, the Azrieli Foundation in partnership with Brain Canada launched a program designed to accelerate novel and transformative research that will fundamentally change the understanding of the brain, in illness or health. The goal is to reduce the social and economic burden of neurological and mental health problems through prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment.

Naomi Azrieli, Chair and CEO of the Azrieli Foundation and Chair of Brain Canada, says that brain research holds the key to unlocking many diseases. "We know that the brain is interconnected and insights into one disease may illuminate issues in other diseases. Researchers who are exploring the brain are our modern-day pioneers, working to conquer the final frontier of science."

Investigators in the early stages of their careers are in a strong position to advance innovative research projects that are "high risk/high reward," but they often lack the preliminary data required to secure their first large grant. In fact, the Fundamental Science Review, commissioned by Canada's Minister of Science in 2016, listed the need to enhance support for early-career researchers among its recommendations. This program provides an opportunity to develop new lines of research on the fundamental properties and mechanisms of the brain and nervous system, to gather preliminary data and position these investigators for long-term scientific success.

"Brain Canada has always believed in the importance of supporting the next generation of researchers – training awards for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are an integral part of our research programs," says Inez Jabalpurwala, President and CEO of Brain Canada. "With this new grant, we are bridging a gap by going beyond training awards to help early-career investigators launch their academic careers."

Supported by the Canada Brain Research Fund, the Early-Career Capacity Building Grant has the potential to be transformative at a time when there is a significant funding gap to support and retain Canada's brightest early-career investigators, who are well positioned to make major contributions to Canadian brain research.

For two decades, Brain Canada has made the case for the brain as a single, complex system with commonalities across the range of neurological disorders, mental illnesses and addictions, brain and spinal cord injuries. Looking at the brain as one system has underscored the need for increased collaboration across disciplines and institutions, and a smarter way to invest in brain research that is focused on outcomes that will benefit patients and families. Brain Canada's vision is to understand the brain, in health and illness, to improve lives and achieve societal impact.

The Canada Brain Research Fund is an innovative partnership between the Government of Canada (through Health Canada) and Brain Canada, designed to encourage Canadians to increase their support of brain research, and maximize the impact and efficiency of those investments. Brain Canada is raising up to $120 million from private donors and non-federal partners—now numbering more than 100—which is being matched by Health Canada on a 1:1 basis. The Fund supports the very best Canadian neuroscience, fostering collaborative research and accelerating the pace of discovery, in order to improve the health and quality of life of Canadians who suffer from brain disorders.

New Book Reveals How To Eat As Much As You Want & Never Gain Weight - Interviews Available With Author
What if you could eat as much as you wanted, all day every day, and never gain weight? No gimmicks, nothing unsafe. And what if it was among the easiest things you've ever done?  Maureen Anderson's book "The Willpower Workaround," readers will learn a new mindset to eating and living well.
Maureen Anderson Says:
One of the boldest moves I ever made was challenging the assumption that food should be a reward for anything. It's like a career consultant friend once told me: you need vacations the same way you need to breathe out after breathing in. Breathing out isn't a reward for breathing in. It's just part of the deal. When you make food a "reward" instead of a normal part of taking care of yourself, there's a tendency to dress it up, to make it "entertainment" (as Dilbert creator Scott Adams says).
We learn in the book that your initial success with permanent weight loss was based on winning a challenge. Do you have any advice for men and women who need a reward to stay on the path toward changing the way they eat?
One key to your success was focusing on how bad certain foods made you feel physically, like the hamburger headaches. Did you also focus on how bad you were going to feel about yourself when you indulged in junk food?
About Maureen Anderson
Maureen Anderson is the host of the nationally-syndicated radio talk show, Doing What Works, that helps you fix what you don't like about your life. She is also the author of The Career Clinic: Eight Simple Rules for Finding Work You Love (AMACOM, 2009). She is the co-author, with Dick Beardsley, of Staying the Course: A Runner's Toughest Race (University of Minnesota Press, 2002). About Sick to Death!

Thyroid disease, and its accompanying symptoms and related disorders, is a very confusing health challenge. The purpose of the Sick to Death! project is to create a resource for health seekers that can assist in confirming that what they are experiencing may in fact be thyroid disease.  With the assistance of a huge community, the Sick to Death! project seeks to improve the medical establishment’s response to thyroid disease.

In Sick to Death! Hadleigh-West exposes AbbVie Pharmaceuticals and their drug Synthroid, one of the most profitable and most commonly prescribed drugs for thyroid disease - yet it under treats 90% of people that suffer with this illness.  Patients are rarely given options for treatment or even told that there might be a more effective treatment.  Sick to Death! uncovers the often ineffective TSH test which leaves millions of people without proper diagnosis for their chronic illness.

Sick to Death! won three Global Film Awards 2017 “Impact Docs” awards, and Hadleigh-West received a Guggenheim Award to make the film.

After drinking radioactive iodine to kill her overactive thyroid, filmmaker Maggie Hadleigh-West catapults into illness only to run smack into a complicated medical maze.  In Sick to Death! Hadleigh-West exposes her own disturbing, yet determined, thirty-year struggle to regain her spiraling health. After seeing hundreds of doctors who either disregarded her symptoms, misdiagnosed or under treated her, Maggie discovers that her life-long thyroid problem was a fully understood medical issue as early as 1914, yet it’s been obscured by systemic medical corruption, pharmaceutical greed, and physician negligence, leaving more than 750 million people sick and suffering world-wide.

About Maggie Hadleigh-West

In 1991 Maggie Hadleigh-West made the very first film on sexual harassment in public called War Zone which garnered world-wide attention and completed a first feature of the same name in 1998.  Sick to Death! is her fourth film and second documentary.  Hadleigh-West is a 2017 Impact Doc Awards winner, a 2013 Guggenheim Fellow Award Winner, 2010 Indie Fest: Audience Impact Merit Award Winner, 2010 Accolade Merit Award Winner, 2009, 2006, and 2005 Alcyon Foundation Fellow, a 2004 New York State Council on the Arts Fellow, 2001 University of Louisville Distinguished Professor Nominee, 2000 Rockefeller Fellow Nominee and a 1998 Berlin Film Festival Caligari Nominee.
