With 2020 Nearly Gone, the Stats are in: The Flu had More Hospitalizations than Covid!
By Jerry McGlothlin
With all the talk about Covid, have you ever wondered if anyone gets the flu anymore?
Looking at the facts can be eye-opening when comparing Covid vs. Flu. In six months between October 1, 2019 and April 4, 2020 there were about 50 million cases of the flu with 500,000 hospitalizations, 50,000 deaths, and 10% of people hospitalized.
Let's compare this with Covid now that we’re 11 months into 2020, we have had a mere 100,000 hospitalizations and this is with the heavy political pressure to call virtually every illness or death Covid. That’s only 20% as many hospitalizations as from the flu, yet in half the time, so it’s closer to 10%.
What’s more, this year’s flu season were lower than usual for every region in the United States. I wonder why. Could it possibly be because many flu cases were diagnosed as Covid due to the extreme rewards offered to hospitals for subsidies for each Covid case???
Get this. There is no statistical difference in the number of children hospitalized for flu vs. Covid-19 and it only kills one in one thousand children, if that.
So, why all the fuss about a virus that is essentially a new version of a common cold?
Had no one made a big deal about Covid-19 and it just made its way through the population, people likely would have viewed it as another version of a cold of flu, people developing herd immunity, and our economy would still be intact.
Let’s drop the fear of dying of Covid and get on with life—but keep washing your hands. That’s always a good habit, especially if you have the habit of picking your nose.
Simplicity of Non-Religious, Non-Discriminatory Spirituality
Houston, TX, Dec. 4, 2020 — Spirituality is distinct from religion and does not discriminate. It cannot! says Ravi Kathuria.
To some, the term ‘spirituality’ sounds mystical or complex, Ravi says. “It’s my mission to share with the world, spirituality is stunningly simple and as natural as sleeping.”
It’s also wholly inclusive and accessible to everyone regardless of caste, creed, religious beliefs, age, status, gender or sexual identity. No judgments. No preconditions, he adds.
By quieting our minds — by tapping into the spirituality that is inextricably woven into our DNA — we have the ability within ourselves to experience profound bliss, explains Ravi Kathuria.
“Learn to quiet your mind is the simple message the ancient Indian sages gave mankind,” he says. “Their message was not religious. It was a scientific discovery about human nature that can raise the quality and experience of life.”
Ravi demystifies spirituality and distinguishes it from religion in his thought-provoking book, Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.: A Modern-Day Parable About Spirituality.
Not a “pedantic” book about archaic dogmas, Happy Soul. Hungry Mind. is an emotional and humorous, easy-to-read parable that shares a series of conversations between two old friends who enjoy spirited discussions about the human journey and life’s challenges.
This format allows Ravi to organically capture the pressures of modern life and reveal techniques for calming the mind. He weaves in Spiritual Truths that boggle the mind and demonstrates how spirituality and modern living can synergistically and practically coexist. It may be the remedy we need in this world of stress and anxiety.
Ravi answers questions people have pondered for ages. “I share a definition of God that can change the course of human history,” states Ravi. “It can make the world more peaceful.”
Written for the modern reader, Happy Soul. Hungry Mind. is free from religious doctrines and makes spirituality accessible to the world’s 7 billion inhabitants. Spirituality benefits the religious and the atheists equally. You do not have to change your beliefs to benefit from spirituality, says Ravi.
“This is not our grandfather’s religious spirituality,” Ravi adds. “This is modern, practical — and simple spirituality! It is time to awaken the world as it yearns for true spirituality.”
Author Ravi Kathuria has been drawn to spirituality ever since he was young. A business thought leader, management consultant and executive coach, he has been quoted by the likes of the Wall Street Journal, NPR and the PBS Nightly Business Report.
His first book, How Cohesive is your Company? presented a holistic, cohesive management method that received great praise from top executives and business professors.
In his second book, Happy Soul. Hungry Mind., Ravi uses his analytical and intuitive skills to solve the complexity and confusion of spirituality. Happy Soul. Hungry Mind. is a work of spiritual genius. Ravi lives in Sugar Land, a suburb of Houston, Texas.

Older Women and Minorities areIntegral to Healing Divided Country
New York, NY, December 3, 2020 — Now that America has voted in Joe Biden, who will be the oldest president ever in the U.S., and Kamala Harris, who will be the first woman—and of color—as vice president, what message is Biden’s team sending by nominating 74-year-old Janet Yellin for U.S. treasury secretary and 68-year-old Linda Thomas-Greenfield as Ambassador to the United Nations? With a clear stand on age and gender, Erica Baird and Karen E. Wagner, two successful lawyers (now retired) and cofounders of Lustre.net, an online community aimed at redefining the stereotypes of retirement for modern career women, share six tips each for Biden and Harris as they further shape their cabinet for the country:
For President-Elect Biden: 1. Deploy the advantages of your age. You have many decades of political and personal experience that allow you to think big. 2. Listen to our cohort when an issue affects people 65 and over. 3. Listen to our cohort when an issue affects people 65 and under. 4. Apply your problem-solving skills to give the people what they need. Most Americans, whoever they voted for, want the same things: an end to COVID, a good job, an excellent education for their children, a secure home and three meals a day, not necessarily in that order. 5. Use your gentle diplomatic approach to bring us together. Older people remember a “United States,” and our hope is that our country can still be a nation undivided. 6. Call on older women. We shouldn’t be dismissed. We’re an untapped demographic with huge intellectual and buying power that we typically don’t flaunt. We are here to enhance.
For Vice President-Elect Harris: 1. Diversity brings strength. Remember that diversity includes age. 2. Pay heed to those politicians who learned to be effective by listening to their adversaries. 3. Keep employing style to convey how a woman exercises power. 4. Channel the power of women to bring about a stronger America. 5. Break the stereotype that assertive women are “bitchy.” 6. Encourage Biden to bring younger and older Americans together to serve the country.
Lustre.net is an online forum founded by Erica Baird and Karen Wagner, two New York City retired attorneys. Together, Baird and Wagner are on a mission to redefine retirement for modern career women by confronting outdated concepts, defying stereotypes and raising our collective voices to ensure that retirement for all of us is shaped by women, for women. Baird and Wagner want women to “tap into our experiences and passions, forge new identities and find new purpose—and pass on what we know to the next generation.”
Post-Traumatic Thriving Explores Powerful Ways to Heal After Heartbreak
Los Angeles, CA, December 3, 2020 — Just when everything seems to be going right — our jobs are stable, our children are succeeding, and the stars seem to be aligning in our favor — the floor drops out. Stunned and unable to make the simplest decisions, we shut down completely. In that moment, it’s nearly impossible to imagine things ever being “normal” again. What just happened?
“It is trauma, in all of its forms. It slaps us right in the face, and hard,” says world-renown expert on disasters and trauma Dr. Randall Bell. “When trauma hits, the most critical decision we make is to choose whether to be a victim, aggressor, survivor or thriver.”
In his new book, Post-Traumatic Thriving: The Art, Science, & Stories of Resilience, Dr. Bell interweaves science and academic research with stories of people who have not just survived, but have used their trauma as their fuel to thrive. Dr. Bell sits down with survivors of the Holocaust; murder-victim’s families; crime victims; suicide survivors; and those who’ve experienced homelessness, disasters, addictions, depression, death, divorce, disabilities, defeats and disease to explore the rare mindset of the post-traumatic thriver.
Through this unprecedented research, Dr. Bell shares with readers stories of remarkable resilience, including the following:
• A deaf man with a glass eye invented the electric guitar and became a household name, remarkably wealthy and most importantly, happy.
• A convicted murderer took responsibility for the damage he caused, graduated with honors from college, became a minister and turned around the hearts of the most hardened criminals.
• A girl born with cerebral palsy landed the world’s first starring role on national television and spoke at the White House three times.
• A woman hid in a basement for years and lost her entire family in the Holocaust. She eventually found true love and paints stunning artwork.
• The sister of a murder victim helped millions of women in toxic domestic relationships.
• A woman’s car crash resulted in an addiction to prescription drugs, a divorce, a loss of her children and a cot in a homeless shelter. She has rebuilt it all back and more.
• A man set to go to the Olympics had his hopes dashed by Jimmy Carter and went on to build a worldwide business empire.
Ultimately, Dr. Bell documents the science of happiness, as well as the individual styles and common thread that all post-traumatic thrivers have to emerge with a fulfilling life. When trauma hits, your most significant decision will be to dive, survive or thrive. If you choose to thrive, this book is for you.
As an economist, Dr. Randall Bell has consulted on more disasters on earth than anyone in history and is widely considered the world’s top authority in the field of post-traumatic thriving. His clients include the Federal Government, State Governments, International Tribunals, major corporations and homeowners. Dr. Bell believes that “the problem is not the problem — the problem is how we react to the problem.”
Often called the “Master of Disaster,” Dr. Bell is squarely focused on authentic recovery and resilience. His research has been profiled on major television shows and featured in numerous magazines and the international media. More information can be found at www.posttraumaticthriving.com.

Many Canadians believe COVID lifestyle changes are affecting their eyes
- Two-thirds of Canadians say they're spending more time looking at screens during the pandemic, which can contribute to vision problems –
TORONTO, Dec. 3, 2020 /CNW/ - COVID-19 has impacted the way we work, learn and socialize, with more Canadians than ever seeking connection and entertainment online. According to a new survey commissioned by Alcon Canada, two-thirds of Canadians requiring vision correction (66 per cent) are spending more time on computer, tablet or phone screens than they did before the pandemic, and nearly one-third (31 per cent) feel their eyesight has gotten worse.
The study of 1,000 Canadians requiring vision correction, conducted by research firm Leger, showed that 34 per cent of Canadians requiring vision correction say their eyes feel more tired during the pandemic than they did before, which is a possible sign of digital eyestrain, a condition caused by spending too much time in front of screens. A study found the effects of long-term computer use on the eyes suggest that digital eyestrain is a form of evaporative dry eye. As a result, tears evaporate on the surface of the eye and can cause them to feel dry, tired or irritated. Despite this:
One-third (34 per cent) say they've delayed getting new contact lenses while another third (33 per cent) say they've delayed getting new glasses, which can further contribute toward worsening vision
Nearly 40 per cent say they're uncomfortable with the idea of visiting their eye care professional during the pandemic
One-quarter (28 per cent) say they're actively experiencing symptoms of dry eye
"While it's tempting to turn to streaming services and e-books for entertainment after long days of working and learning on screens, I'm seeing patients in my clinic who are suffering from sore, tired eyes as a result, which could be a sign of dry eye caused by digital eyestrain," says Dr. Shawn Moore, optometrist at Orillia Optometry. "Conditions like dry eye can also present as blurry vision, so if you're experiencing changes in your eyesight, patients still need to prioritize seeing an optometrist at this time to re-assess their vision care needs. Your eye doctor might recommend using an eye drop with lipids, like SYSTANE® COMPLETE, or switching to a daily disposable contact lens featuring water gradient technology, like DAILIES TOTAL1®."
In addition to dry eye and worsening vision, the survey showed that Canadians are frustrated with the inconvenience and nuisance of foggy glasses caused by wearing a mask and glasses together while running errands. Three-quarters of Canadians who wear glasses say their glasses fog up when wearing masks; 35 per cent say they adjust their glasses more when wearing them with masks; and more than half of Canadians (51 per cent) requiring vision correction wear contact lenses when going outside.
Experiencing changes with your vision during COVID-19? The following steps could help:
Give your eyes a rest. When looking at screens, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look 20 feet away to fight digital eyestrain.
Find the right eye drop. While dry eye is often a chronic condition that can't be cured, the right eye drop can provide comfort and help improve symptoms. Lipids found in a drop like SYSTANE® Complete restore the outer layer of the tear film, which helps prevent the tear evaporation often seen with digital eyestrain.
Consider a daily disposable contact lens. If your blurry vision is caused by a changing prescription and not dry eye, consider a daily disposable lens when updating your prescription, which eliminates the need for cleaning and storing your lenses. For those seeking exceptional comfort and additional hydration, DAILIES TOTAL1® features the world's first and only water-gradient lens technology, which creates a cushion of moisture on the eye that is so comfortable, it feels like you're wearing nothing at all.
Reassess your set up. Place your screen at an arm's length away from you and adjust screen brightness to your surroundings, eliminating any harsh lighting near your workspace.
Visit your optometrist. Recognizing the increase in screen time during the pandemic, now is not the time to neglect your eye health. Regular eye exams are critical to ensuring your vision health, and only an eye care professional can diagnose a condition like dry eye or prescribe the right vision corrective device. Eye care professionals across Canada have put in place a number of COVID-19 safety precautions to help protect you while in their clinics. Many offer virtual appointments where appropriate and can provide direct shipping for products like contact lenses and eye drops.
Study Methodology An online survey of 1,000 Canadians who wear corrective eye wear was completed between September 22 and September 27, 2020, using Leger's online panel. For comparative purposes, a probability sample of 1000 respondents would have a margin of error of ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
