Faith and First Responders: How Believing in a Higher Power Can Promote Healing

Antioch, CA, September 14, 2022 — If he were given a chance to travel back in time, make different choices and avoid a prison sentence, Norm Wielsch says he would decline the offer. In 2013, the former undercover narcotic agent was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison after he pled guilty to corruption charges, and it was there, behind prison walls, where he finally found healing through faith.

“If you don’t believe in a higher power, there’s no rhyme or reason to life,” Wielsch said in a recent interview. “Life is just a series of incidents that happen. But if you truly believe that there is a higher power, and there’s a reason for things that happen, I believe that you can adjust to it, and cope with it a little bit better.”

As a police officer for 25 years, Wielsch witnessed his share of trauma and would later fall into a downward spiral following his own diagnosis of PTSD. He served 8 years of his 14-year sentence and emerged from federal prison determined to help others — particularly first responders — heal from trauma.

Wielsch’s new book, Christ Centered Healing of Trauma: Healing a Broken Heart (and companion small group study guide), teaches foundational principles and tools for resolving issues related to traumatic life events.

Readers will learn how trauma affects the heart, body and soul; how to manage emotions; how to identify the root cause of emotional pain; and how to begin the healing process.

Through a bible study portion, readers will learn God's plan for salvation and healing. Included are numerous sample prayers to guide readers through the healing process.

Wielsch’s Christ-Centered healing method was originally designed to minister to first responders and combat veterans but is also appropriate for counselors, pastors, chaplains and anyone whose lives are impacted by trauma.

“This book is not only for the victims of trauma, but for their husbands, wives, daughters, sons and parents who suffer right along with them,” Wielsch said. “They are wounded people as well. Hurt people, hurt people. Since our families are the closest to us, we tend to hurt them more than we intend.”

About the Author

Norm Wielsch was a law enforcement officer for over 25 years — 16 of those as an undercover narcotic agent. In 1998, he was diagnosed with an incurable neuro-muscular disease, and after more than 30 surgeries, he became addicted to opioids. Wielsch was diagnosed with PTSD, and then his daughter was diagnosed with a serious illness and given a poor prognosis. In a downward spiral, Wielsch made a series of bad decisions that landed him in federal prison.

While incarcerated, he obtained a master’s degree in Theology and Counseling, a Doctorate in Christian Counseling, and a Drug and Alcohol Counseling Degree. He currently works at a men's residential treatment facility as a registered alcohol and drug counselor and pastoral care provider. He is a working credentialed chaplain who hopes to one day launch a first responder ministry.

Wielsch also has a master’s degree in Law Enforcement Management and is an expert in law enforcement tactics, criminal investigations, pursuit driving, high risk search warrant service, PTSD and the police culture.

Holistic stroke awareness will mitigate rising disease burden in India, says GlobalData

Brain stroke (Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS)) is the fourth leading cause of death, as well as the fifth leading cause of disability in India. Lack of disease awareness is one of the primary reasons behind the increasing incidence of the disease. Against this backdrop, a better awareness about the warning signs and risk factors at all levels of care will not only help save lives but also reduces disease burden, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

According to ‘GlobalData’s Pharmaceutical Intelligence Center’, the incidence of stroke in India ranges between 104 and 105/100,000 people per year, with an expected increase in diagnosed incident cases from 6.2 million in 2022 to 6.7 million in 2027, at an annual growth rate (AGR) of 1.7%.

Against this backdrop, Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) has recently conducted the first-ever consumer survey on brain stroke – “The State of Stroke: A Survey on Awareness About Stroke In Urban India” on the occasion of World Brain Day.

The rationale behind this survey was to bring forth the prime factor responsible for the magnitude of the disease burden, i.e., lack of awareness around brain stroke in the country. The survey findings, based on 4,742 respondents across 12 cities in India, revealed that only 22% of them were aware of brain stroke and its risk factors, with awareness level dropping to a meager 10% with respect to stroke-related treatment options. Actilyse and Pradaxa are the two BI drugs used for stroke treatment and management in India.

Atulana Dey, Pharma Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Along with an aging population, susceptibility to cardio-metabolic dysfunction due to a more vulnerable race and ethnicity, and other risk factors like hypertension and type 2 diabetes, which are working in cohort to increase the stroke prevalence and incidence, limited awareness among the population surrounding this disease are adding on to the burden.”

The current treatment options for stroke in India vary with the severity of the situation. Intravenous administration of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) within 4.5 hours of the stroke episode is the gold standard of first-line treatment.

GlobalData’s ‘Digital Marketing Intelligence’ identified digital assets only from Boehringer Ingelheim – one unbranded website (Strokeofsupport.com) and one unbranded iOS/android mobile application (Angels Stopwatch), targeting Indian patients and caregivers.

Owing to increased stress, anxiety and unhealthy food lifestyle that has developed rapidly over the last decade, age group of 18–50 is equally prone to this debilitating condition as is the aging population.

Dey concludes: “The escalating stroke incidence calls for the government and key companies to join forces and act on the unmet need of creating an enhanced understanding of stroke symptoms, risk factors, treatment options and preventative measures. Improved knowledge of the disease will not only help patients and families identify the condition, but a prompt response within a few hours of identification can also help save lives by limiting the overall long-term physical and neurological damage.”

CMPA publishes breakthrough research on residents named in civil legal cases

OTTAWA, ON, Sept. 14, 2022 /CNW/ - The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) announced today the publication of Patterns and trends among physicians-in-training named in civil legal cases. The results of this study will help direct the Association's future patient safety learning efforts for residents (physicians-in-training) to improve safe medical care.

Published in CMAJ Open, it is the first peer-reviewed research of its kind to explore the frequency and types of cases among physicians-in-training named in civil legal cases in Canada. The results of this research will help inform the CMPA's efforts to promote patient safety through enhanced education, targeted at reducing the frequency and severity of medical liability issues for physicians-in-training.

Focusing on learning and promoting patient safety

Sharing these data may help physicians-in-training to anticipate and mitigate patient safety risks and to shape their expectations for medico-legal events during their years-long training. More specifically, awareness of medico-legal patterns across specialty areas can help stakeholders in postgraduate medical education to focus on areas of priority to address and mitigate medico-legal risk.

"Ultimately, our focus on robust data collection and analytics results in research that enables the development of physician training that promotes patient safety," said Dr. Armand Aalamian, Executive Director, Learning at the CMPA. "These learning offerings are another terrific example of how we serve our members' patient safety needs."

Shedding light on the emotional toll of civil legal cases on physicians-in-training

Civil legal cases take an emotional toll on any physician, but there are unique stressors and important considerations when a physician-in-training is named in a case. We know physicians-in-training sometimes worry about their medico-legal liability, but until now, information on how often and why they are sued hasn't been available.

Significantly, the study reports that civil legal cases can last several years. Therefore, given 2- to 3-year residencies in Canadian family medicine programs and 4- to 5-year training programs in other specialties, civil legal cases can persist through the entire duration of residency, and even beyond.

"The stress caused by a poor patient outcome, compounded with a medico-legal matter, can be agonizing for physicians-in-training," said Dr. Lisa Calder, Chief Executive Officer of the CMPA and the study's senior author. "It's a difficult thing to go through – and this research helps shed light on an often undiscussed and misunderstood element of life as a resident."

CMPA Research: Supporting physicians and enhancing patient safety

The CMPA is Canada's largest physician organization, with 105,000+ members, of whom 12% are physicians-in-training. The Association's team of 45+ physician advisors answer more than 24,000 advice calls a year, respond to online inquiries, and provide empathetic support and expert guidance to help members handle specific medico-legal and patient safety challenges.

"Our national repository of physician medico-legal data is the largest of its kind in the world," said Chantz Strong, Executive Director, Research and Analytics and Chief Privacy Offer at the CMPA. "Our data uniquely position us to identify the medico-legal trends of physicians across the country."

CMPA research is published in peer-reviewed medical and science journals, and informs collaborative research initiatives.

Review the complete published analysis available on CMAJ Open.

About the CMPA

The CMPA delivers efficient, high quality physician-to-physician advice and assistance in medico-legal matters, including the provision of appropriate compensation, on behalf of our members, to patients injured by negligent medical care (fault in Québec). Our evidence-based products and services enhance patient safety, reducing unnecessary patient harm and healthcare costs.

As Canada's largest physician organization and with the support of our over 105,000 physician members, the CMPA collaborates, advocates, and effects positive change on important healthcare and medico-legal issues. The Association is governed by an elected Council of physicians.

Rivalry Officially Launches First Casino Game on its Platform

  • Untapped casino segment offers new source of revenue growth and customer engagement
  • Casino represents one of the largest revenue segments for most online betting companies
  • Rivalry launched its first title of several expected to be added in coming quarters

TORONTO, Sept. 13, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rivalry Corp. (the “Company” or “Rivalry”) (TSXV: RVLY) (OTCQX: RVLCF) (FSE: 9VK), an internationally regulated sports betting and media company, today announced that it has expanded its product offering into the casino segment. This offering is available online in markets under the Company’s Isle of Man license, with Ontario expected to follow in the coming months. Rivalry users in these markets can now play and bet on Aviator, a popular online game in the “crash” category.

“Our strategy is to continuously expand our product offering and provide our customers with fresh content that is consistent with our brand,” said Steven Salz, Co-Founder and CEO of Rivalry. “With a strong foundation in esports betting and a growing traditional sports business, offering casino in an authentically Rivalry way is the next step for us. Aviator is a great selection as our first-ever third-party casino game, as it is simple, fun, easy to learn, and has a live chat element that aligns with our focus on community.”

The premise of Aviator is a plane that takes off and flies higher and higher, with the bet multiplier constantly increasing until the moment the plane flies away. Players who “cash out” on time win their bet at that multiplier, while those who wait too long do not. Driven by a provably fair random number generator, the game is risky but offers the possibility of high payout. Aviator is great on mobile and desktop with a simple user interface and fast game sessions. The multiplayer format and ability to interact with other players offer a social aspect, in contrast with traditional online slot and casino games whose solitary experience is less appealing to the younger demographic.

For many online betting companies, casino represents one of their largest single verticals in terms of betting handle and revenue. Up until now, Rivalry has focused on building an industry leading esports betting experience, traditional sports betting offering, and its innovative Massively Multiplayer Online Gambling Games (“MMOGG”) category, beginning with Rushlane. As such, the Company sees a significant potential growth opportunity with the addition of a third-party casino offering for the first time. With more consistency of customer return than sportsbook, and no seasonality, it can also offer greater stability throughout the calendar year of sporting events.

As the world’s most engaged brand in esports betting,1 Rivalry is leveraging the trust of its loyal customer base to build upon its esports betting business with the addition of casino. The Company believes the trust it has fostered over the years will enable more rapid organic adoption of new product offerings such as casino.

Rivalry’s casino offering will complement the MMOGG category which the Company created last year with the launch of Rushlane. The Company plans to continue to build out its MMOGG universe and has plans to add additional games to its casino offering in the coming quarters. Both offerings, third-party casino and MMOGG, fall under the umbrella of Rivalry Games, one of the key business pillars of the Company. Rivalry believes both complement one another as part of a cohesive strategy to deliver engaging experiences to its global customer base.

About Rivalry:

Rivalry Corp. wholly owns and operates Rivalry Limited, a leading sport betting and media property offering fully regulated online wagering on esports, traditional sports, and casino for the next generation of bettors. Based in Toronto, Rivalry operates a global team in more than 20 countries and growing. Rivalry Limited has held an Isle of Man license since 2018, considered one of the premier online gambling jurisdictions. Rivalry holds a sports bookmaker license in Australia and an internet gaming registration in Ontario and is currently in the process of obtaining additional country licenses. The Company also has a variety of originally developed products, including Quest, an on-site engagement experience, and an original casino game called Rushlane, a proprietary casino game that marks the creation of a new category for online gaming: Massively Multiplayer Online Gambling Games (MMOGG).

From Making Mistakes to Making It Big: The Pitch Queen Unveils Imperfect Journey to the Top

Brooklyn, NY, September 13, 2022 — Precious Williams is a self-described “full-figured diva from St. Louis” who admits she made every mistake in the book before making it big as a bestselling author and CEO of Perfect Pitches By Precious. Today, she shares the power of creating the perfect pitch with audiences that number in the thousands, but she climbed a higher mountain than most people realize to get there.

“You can make every mistake in the world. You can fail a lot of times and still wind up on top because persistence beats resistance,” Williams said in a recent interview.  “There’s no way I should be where I am today.”

As recently as 2018, Williams was living in a women’s center in New York City, battling depression and addiction. She shares her profound transformation — and her empowering philosophy — in her latest book, The Pitch Queen: A Woman’s Journey From Poverty To Purpose & Profits. In it, she paves the way for others who are struggling by proving there is power in embracing one’s authentic self — flaws and all.

“My journey has been about showing others how to give birth to their next beautiful now, right now,” Williams said. “I want you to take the things that people say are your flaws and make them your secret weapons.”

In The Pitch Queen, Williams takes readers inside the biggest challenges of her life, revealing that she once dated a former drug kingpin, battled with her sexuality, lost her mind, got evicted twice and was kicked out of law school. She refused to give up, and she rebuilt her business empire with the very bricks that once blocked her path.

Key takeaways from The Pitch Queen include:

-The importance of resilience and how to overcome adversity

- How to develop a winning mindset

-The power of focus and consistency

- How to take control of your life and create the future you want

The Pitch Queen is more than just a story; it’s a call to action,” Williams said. “It's time for you to take control of your life and create the future you want.”

Ontario’s Russell Alexander Family Law Firm Gives Back to
Community With Three-Day Event Offering Free Legal Information

Lawyers to hold virtual summit, pro bono day ensuring all families get access to legal system

TORONTO, Ontario—Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers will offer free legal informational sessions during a three-day event next week to ensure families from all demographics know their rights and get access to the legal system.

The firm will hold its first-ever complimentary two-day virtual summit on Sept. 21-22 called Family Law Now Live, with sessions on collaborative divorce, the voice of the child in family court, divorce and income assessments and valuations, property sharing, spousal support and common law separations, among other topics.

The sessions, which will be held live on Zoom, will be hosted by founder Russell Alexander, as well as firm associates and guest professionals, serving as an extension of the firm’s biweekly virtual event series on family law.

“Because we’ve received such a positive response to the bi-weekly family law series, we wanted to expand it and really go in-depth on some issues that people are curious about,” said Alexander. “It feels good to be able to share the wealth of knowledge we have among our staff and colleagues to help families struggling with these problems.”

In addition, lawyers with Russell Alexander’s law firm will offer free one-on-one consultations during the firm’s first-ever Pro Bono Day on Friday, Sept. 23. Seasoned family lawyers will meet virtually for complimentary initial family law consultations with people considering or seeking a divorce or separation.

“No one should be forced to stay in a bad family situation because they can’t afford good legal advice,” added Alexander. “We believe access to the legal system is a right every resident in the province should have and the event is one way for us to help expand this access and demystify the family law system in Ontario for everyone who needs it.”

Registration is required to attend. To register for the family law summit, go online hereor to request a pro bono initial consultation go online here.
