This New Year Begin A Journey Of Discovery That Will Lead To A More Fulfilling Life

Elkhart, IN, January 7, 2019 ― One of the biggest regrets people have in life is that they didn't do what they wanted to do and instead did what everyone else told them to do. But it's possible to break the cycle by simply deciding now to live a life of intention.

Craig C. Sroda, founder and former CEO of Pinnacle of Indiana, provides actionable, step-by-step instructions for living a more purpose-driven life in The Ultimate Manual — a personal life coach in a book.

With 232 pages of clear, customizable exercises, The Ultimate Manual guides readers on a journey of discovery that will provide insight into the following areas:

•    Strengths
•    Emotional Intelligence
•    Love Languages
•    Turning Points
•    Life Wheel Evaluation
•    Time Usage
•    Core Values
•    Legacy Thinking, and more

Additionally, Sroda teaches readers how to take everything they've uncovered and synthesize it into a unique, one-page life plan — a dashboard of sorts to keep front and center that will help readers stay on track and accomplish their goals.

Anyone of virtually any age who is seeking purpose and looking for affirmation for their life direction will find valuable information between the covers of The Ultimate Manual that will help them live their lives on purpose — with purpose — and minimize regrets.

Author Craig Sroda's mission is to guide people toward ways that work for them to live their lives intentionally. His goal is to influence 100,000 people to create a life plan by 2022. With the ripple effect, those 100,000 people will influence one million through their five domains of life: personal, family, vocation, community and faith.

Sroda co-founded and served as CEO of Pinnacle of Indiana — one of Indiana's largest Microsoft partners — for 18 years. His passion is helping individuals operate in their "sweet spot”— a place where their passion and strengths intersect so they can maximize their potential. Sroda's previous books include You in the Sweet Spot and Intentional Living and Leadership. After completing his first life plan and exposing priorities of his faith, his wife, three daughters and wanting to help others live on purpose, he sold his company. He is committed to helping others recognize their natural strengths and know their "why.”

Canadians with dementia lead Alzheimer Society campaign: "Yes. I live with dementia. Let me help you understand."

Across the country, brave and passionate voices come together to challenge attitudes and stop stigma.

TORONTO, Jan. 7, 2019 /CNW/ - "Life has lots of bumps in the road. My dementia is just one of those bumps. You don't give up anytime you run into a barrier."

81-year-old Ron Robert is no stranger to dementia—he lost three siblings and an uncle to the disease. But when he was diagnosed three years ago, it still came as a shock. Once the reality of the news sunk in, however, Ron decided there was only one way forward: Stay positive and get on with his life. After all, he had a bucket list that included such goals as going to university.

Having served as an advisor to former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Ron enrolled in a political science course at Wilfrid Laurier University. It wasn't easy at first—he had to work hard to keep up with his classmates, remember his way around the campus and concentrate on his assignments. But he finished the course with an A.

Ron is now studying ageism at King's University College in London and completing a research paper on the benefits of education for people with dementia. When he's not at school, Ron stays active both physically and socially, walking everywhere and spending time with his family. Ron is Métis and married to a member of the Oneida Nation of the Thames. They have three grown children.

There is much more to Ron than his disease, and he has lots of life left to live.

That's the premise of the Alzheimer Society's continuing nationwide campaign: Yes. I live with dementia. Let me help you understand. While there is no question that dementia is a challenging disease, it's just one aspect of a person's life story.

The campaign, which kicks into high gear on Monday, January 7, 2019 during Alzheimer's Awareness Month, showcases the unique and diverse stories of individuals from across the country living with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. The aim of the campaign is to change attitudes toward the disease and erase the stigma. Life continues after a diagnosis of dementia.

"We're turning the conversation over to the experts," says Pauline Tardif, CEO at the Alzheimer Society of Canada. "We believe sharing the stories of Canadians living with dementia will fuel a more open, supportive and inclusive dialogue around dementia, and give confidence to others who have this disease to live their best lives."

Research shows that stigma around dementia is rampant. In a survey commissioned by the Alzheimer Society last year, 1 in 4 Canadians said they would feel ashamed or embarrassed if they had dementia, while 1 in 5 admitted to using derogatory or stigmatizing language about dementia.

While accepting a diagnosis of dementia is hard enough, it's even harder to deal with reactions from others.

"You're immediately labeled," says 59-year-old Keith Barrett, who lives with young onset Alzheimer's. Keith is the co-founder and director of a small Ottawa-based organization that provides supports to individuals with a variety of developmental and physical disabilities. He continues to work despite his diagnosis.

"My wife Robin and I didn't sign up for this disease," says Keith. "But when others spend so much time looking at you differently, they lose sight of the fact that we share the same life experiences as any other couple on the journey of life. We have good days and bad days. We don't want to be treated differently. We want to feel accepted and make it acceptable to speak candidly about dementia. We need to look out for each other."

In addition to helping Canadians better understand dementia, the campaign provides a platform for people like Keith and Ron to define who they are as individuals, rather than being defined by the disease.

Throughout January and the remainder of the year, Canadians are invited to visit the campaign's dedicated website to read and watch the compelling stories of people getting on with their life in spite of dementia, get tips on how to help end stigma, test their own attitudes towards the disease and download other useful resources. THE PROS AND CONS OF USING ONLINE SUPPORT GROUPS FOR ADDICTION, GRIEF, PTSD OR EATING DISORDERS

www.beachway.com

image.png

As we enter 2019, the Internet has ushered in a new trend of online support groups. These online communities have been a game changer for some people who struggle with addictions such as alcohol, drugs, eating disorders, PTSD, anxiety, and grief.  Can people reap the same benefits from online groups as they can in ‘real life,’ in person settings? We turned to Carrie Carlton LCSW at Beachway Therapy Center in Boynton Beach, Florida for answers.

Benefits of Online Support Groups

1.   Members can log in any time they need help. For instance, every time you feel a strong urge to drink, you may turn to community members for immediate support. Carrie Carlton offers, “This would be impossible with traditional face-to-face meetings. 24/7 support is especially crucial in the first, most fragile phase of alcohol withdrawal.

2.    “Online communities tend to be more diverse, which gives you an insight into the struggles of people from different backgrounds. At the same time, the differences such as age, ethnic background, or gender are not obvious unless disclosed, which contributes to an egalitarian atmosphere,” says Carrie Carlton.

3.   People suffering from social anxiety, disabilities, autism, or illness can participate in online meetings with more ease.

4.   For those who live in small towns where meetings may be far away, or sparse, online access is very convenient.

5.   Online meetings protect anonymity. Carrie Carlton explains that “Even though AA and NA (Narcotics anonymous) have rules about keeping who you see and what you hear in that room private, for people who are shy, truly being “anonymous” online might be helpful.”

LIMITATIONS OF ONLINE SUPPORT GROUPS

Lack of commitment: Though easy accessibility can be an advantage, it can also make it harder to form an attachment to the group and the individuals in it. Carlton states that “Sacrificing more time and energy to get to meetings tends to build more commitment to the group and decrease the chances that an addicted individual will stop attending and relapse.”

Online bullying: Unfortunately, cyberbullying is still a large problem. It can be very easy for a bully to sign up for an online support group, get access to chat rooms and message boards, and post abusive messages or even try to trigger people into relapse. Carrie Carlton points out that, “People tend not to try this kind of thing at in-person meetings as they would have to deal with immediate consequences and would not be anonymous.”

Miscommunication: Carrie Carlton points out that, “It can be difficult to convey tone online. People tend to have significantly more misunderstandings when interacting over the Internet because they can’t hear each other’s tone of voice or see facial expressions.” This can possibly be helped by the use of video conferencing, but lag and poor picture quality can still cause problems.

Lack of True Fellowship: With groups such AA, people are able to meet face to face and often see the same members repeatedly at meetings.  Group members introduce themselves by first name each time they speak. This allows other members to put a face with a name.  In addition, AA and other support groups often have fellowship activities such as yoga, holiday dinners, or other group activities. It is very difficult to foster this sense of community and closeness in the virtual world.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL ANSWER TO INTERNET VERSUS “REAL LIFE MEETINGS?”

“For anyone who is a danger to themselves or others, they need a much higher level of care in a confined facility, be it a detox, rehab, or in severe cases, a psychiatric hospital.  Once addicts/alcoholics are “stable” the best-case scenario is to attend meetings regularly, get a sponsor, and practice “fellowship” with others in your group,” says Carrie Carlton.   Online support groups can be a helpful supplement to in-person meetings, one on one sessions with a therapist, or intensive outpatient therapy.  Thanks to 21st-century technology and the prevalence of 12 step meetings, there is no reason people have to choose one method or the other.

YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING FITNESS QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY A FITNESS GURU AND YOUTUBE SENSATION

www.Vshred.com

image.png

If you follow fitness trainers or enthusiasts on Instagram, we are besieged by women at the gym who look supremely confident, airbrushed and without a bead of sweat. The reality is, most of us don’t look or smell our best after a tough workout.  Not everyone is comfortable walking into a class of strangers in form-fitting gym clothes.  And what about the sounds our bodies make when we are working out?  What about those of us who want to exercise but feel we are too heavy to even begin a program?  Fortunately, we have Certified Fitness Trainer, Model Turned Fitness Expert, Instagram Fitness Guru & YouTube Sensation Vince Sant, co-founder of the online platform www.vshred.com  to answer the questions you are too shy to ask.

Why do I let out a little pee when I exercise?

Vince Sant explains that “This is very common amongst anyone who’s had a child. the term is stress incontinence, meaning you involuntarily leak out a little urine. It can happen when you exercise, laugh, or even sneeze.” First and foremost, don’t be embarrassed. Nearly every woman that’s given birth has experienced this. There are, however, two things you can do to improve stress incontinence says Vince, “Learn how to do Kegels, and practice engaging your pelvic floor in Pilates-based exercises. Both of these actions can help strengthen your pelvic floor and reduce the severity of your stress incontinence.”

Will running make my boobs sag?

“Sag happens to all breasts that are natural. It’s normal for the collagen that keeps breasts firm to stretch out thanks to gravity, time, pregnancy, weight gain, or weight loss.” Although there’s limited research, Vince Sant says, “The up and down motion of running could logically contribute to sagging as well, but the health benefits of running definitely outweigh that possibility. If you wear the right sports bra, your breasts shouldn’t experience a lot of movement anyway. So, don’t be afraid to run!’

Why do I seem to sweat so much more than other people at the gym?

“How much you sweat is really individual, and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything positive or negative about your exercising ability,” says Vince. On average, men tend to sweat more than women, and if you are overweight you may sweat more near the end of your workout because it takes more for your body to cool itself down. Ultimately, it’s not a bad thing if you find yourself drenched in sweat while the person next to you on their machine seems to be relatively dry.

Why does running long distances make me have to poop?

Long distance running can aggravate some people’s digestive systems, particularly if you suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). But you don’t necessarily have to have pre-existing digestive issues to get some unpleasant stomach symptoms on long runs. For example, studies show that as much as 50% of runners in a 10k race experience digestive issues, including runner’s trots. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, but there are things you can do to combat the unpleasant reality of urgent, frequent bathroom trips. Vince suggests avoiding high-fiber foods a few days before a big race, staying well-hydrated, and avoid caffeine.

Why do I tend to pass gas during certain yoga poses?

Passing gas during the occasional downward dog is extremely common. Why? You’re bending and stretching, which massages the internal organs—which can sometimes stimulate your digestion. (There’s even a yoga pose called “wind reliever). Vince recommends, limiting any high fiber snacks beforehand, and stretching before your actual class to “eliminate” ahead of time.

What’s the best way to start exercising if I am completely out of shape?

Literally just put one foot in front of the other. A Chinese Philosopher once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” And walking is nothing to be ashamed of. Vince stresses that “It really is exercise and there are all kinds of athletic people and celebrities in amazing shape who use it to stay that way. Get a pedometer and take at least 10,000 ‘baby steps’ a day and start improving your fitness.”

I have gym anxiety. What should I do?

There are four psychological reasons for gym anxiety: Not being sure what to do, comparing yourself to other people in the gym, feeling like people are judging you, and feeling like you don’t belong. What are a few ways to reduce gym anxiety?

Vince Sant provides some tips:

Ask friends how they feel about their own programs. You can even try to go to the gym with a friend, which is a great way to stop feeling like you’re getting judged.

Watch YouTube videos for each of the exercises you plan to do on your first day at the gym.

Wear workout clothes that you feel are both flattering and comfortable.

Pick a gym that is known for being more low key as opposed to a “meat market” or a “sceney gym.”

If going to the gym is too anxiety provoking, you can try an online fitness platform such as www.vshred.com

My Skin Chafes almost Everywhere: My Butt Cheeks, Under My Arms, Inner Thighs, How Do I Reduce the Pain?

Skin-to-skin and skin-to-clothing rubbing can cause a red, raw rash that can bleed, sting, and cause pain during your post-workout shower. Moisture and salt on the body make it worse. Underarms, inner thighs, along with the bra line (women), and nipples (men) are vulnerable spots. Vince advises, “Wear moisture-wicking, seamless, tagless gear. The fit is important. Baggy shirts have excess material that can cause irritation; a too-snug sports bra can dig into skin. Apply Vaseline, sports lube, Band-Aids or Nip Guards before you run. And moisturize after you shower. Drier skin tends to chafe more.

Am I too overweight to work out?

Forget the fancy equipment, you don’t need anything to start. Keep it low impact and rest when you need to. For example, Vince suggests the following, “Jog for 30 seconds. It doesn’t matter if you have to walk for 5 minutes to get your breath back, just do it, then jog for another 30 seconds. Do that 3 times. Then when you’ve done that for a couple of days, jog for 10 more seconds each time. Then only take 4.5 minutes to get your breath back. And as you lower the rest time, repeat it 5 times instead of 3. Keeping the overall workout time at around 20 minutes total is fine.” If you haven't exercised for a while, the body heat, breathlessness, and sore muscles can be off-putting, but those feelings quickly become more manageable.     If you have any concerns about your health and ability to work out, always consult with your doctor first.

TO ‘IF’ OR NOT TO ‘IF’

The Dish on Intermittent Fasting (IF)

By Dr. Eddie Fat-Off (Eddie Fatakhov M.D.), author of “Dr. Fat-Off Simple Life-Long Weight-Loss Solutions.”

Thanks to celebrity endorsements and media exposure, Intermittent Fasting (IF) has grown in popularity in recent years. However, before you take fasting on as a weight loss solution or a way to cure diseases such as diabetes, it is important to understand why and how IF can affect your body – both positively and negatively.

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Some people mistake IF with starvation. Starvation occurs due to extreme hunger or lack of food. IF is a controlled cycling between periods of eating and not eating while food is readily available.

How do you Intermittently Fast?

Because IF is a practice unique to each individual there is no set duration or set of rules to follow. For instance, some might fast between breakfast and dinner for a predetermined amount of time. This is why many think of fasting as a way of life.

Why would you Intermittently Fast?

A good amount of research has been done to determine what the benefits of IF are. While there are varying opinions where IF is concerned these are the main benefits most can agree on:

1.) Weight Loss

IF is believed to cause weight loss because periods of not eating lowers insulin levelsInsulin is a hormone that allows our bodies cells to take in the glucose created by the break down of any carbohydrates we eat. This causes weight gain when that glucose is converted to fat and put into storage for future use.

During IF cells release the stored glucose to create the energy the body needs. This plus the overall lowering of calories eaten can result in weight loss.

2.) Possible Decreased Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

As previously discussed IF is believed to cause weight loss while lowering insulin levels. These two affects are key when it comes to type 2 diabetes since being obese or overweight with increasingly high insulin levels greatly increases the risk of developing this disease.

Unfortunately, this is where research is split. Some research has found evidence that IF could be beneficial for people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes while other research has found that IF can actually increase the risks through an increase in abdominal fat, bodily misuse of insulin, and muscle depletion (major risk factors for type 2 diabetes).

3.) A Healthier Heart

This report found that IF could reduce heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides (a fat linked the heart disease).

4.) A Healthier Brain

While studies on the affect IF has on humans are still needed IF seems to have promising benefits in the animal world. Studies have found IF can reduce the occurrence of neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, and even stroke.

5.) Reduced Cancer Risks

Animal studies are finding that IF can actually affect the rate of onset for tumors (human studies are needed).

The question becomes: To IF or not to IF?

For those thinking about IF but aren’t sure if they can do it, understand that you already experience a period of fasting every 24 hours when you sleep. As for incorporating IF into your daytime life I have one very important piece of advice for my readers.

Consult a physician before making big changes in your diet and routine. This conversation is very important when considering IF as a preventative measure or to encourage weight loss. With your doctor you can make a plan that would work best for you and your physical needs.

New Year, New Career at DeafBlind Ontario Services

NEWMARKET, ON, Jan. 2, 2019 /CNW/ - Following the countdown, many begin the new year with the best of intentions. With 365 days of possibilities ahead, each new year presents a fresh slate and a time to set goals.

Resolutions that lead to meaningful change are rewarding and self-fulfilling. If you are searching for an opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to another person's quality of life, consider pursuing a career as an intervenor.

Intervenors are specially trained professionals who act as the "eyes" and "ears" of the individual who is deafblind through the sense of touch. Deafblindness is a combined loss of vision and hearing to such an extent that neither sense can be used as a means of accessing information. This can impact communication, mobility, and a sense of inclusion in one's community.

Intervenors work with individuals who are deafblind, helping them learn through experience, empowering them to make informed decisions and be active participants in all areas of their lives. "DeafBlind Ontario Services offers a holistic approach, to empower each individual who is deafblind to achieve as much independence as possible," says Sarah, one of DeafBlind Ontario Services' intervenors.

Intervenors work in a variety of settings, in the community, residential or educational settings. Intervenors are leaders, problem solvers, and team players. They may be called on to employ their creativity and flexibility, and should be comfortable working closely with others.

Holly has worked as an intervenor at DeafBlind Ontario Services ever since graduating from the Developmental Services Worker (DSW) program at Loyalist College four years ago. "I am so honoured to support people who are deafblind. I feel a strong bond with each of the individuals I support; it is important to me to emphasize their strengths, abilities, and ultimately help them to achieve as much independence as possible," says Holly.

Whether you are graduating from high school or a post-secondary institution, or even considering a second career, exploring a role as an intervenor might be the solution for you. DSW, PSW, or SSW certifications are ideal credentials. However, DeafBlind Ontario Services will provide necessary training to individuals without these certifications too.

DeafBlind Ontario Services strives to be a top employer in the field by investing in their employees through extensive training, mentoring, and other professional development opportunities throughout all levels of the organization. DeafBlind Ontario Services has been awarded the designation of Nonprofit Employer of Choice two times, in 2015 and 2016. The Nonprofit Employer of Choice Awards (NEOC) recognizes organizations whose people leadership and vision has translated into exemplary talent management practices.

Intervenor Services is a sector that is currently experiencing growth and there is a shortage of trained intervenors. George Brown College's two-year program, Intervenor for Deafblind Persons, is currently the only in Ontario.

DeafBlind Ontario Services is hiring intervenors across the following areas:
Ayr
Barrie
Embrun
Georgina
Kitchener
London
Oshawa
Ottawa
Peterborough

DeafBlind Ontario Services is a not-for-profit organization that helps individuals who are deafblind to increase their independence and improve their quality of life through specialized services. With programs across the province, their reach extends into a wide range of communities in Ontario.

GeneNews Expands Coverage by Commercial Health Insurance Networks

Signs Second Convertible Security Funding Agreement with
Lind Asset Management for $500,000

/THIS NEWS RELEASE IS INTENDED FOR DISTRIBUTION IN CANADA ONLY AND IS NOT INTENDED FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE UNITED STATES NEWSWIRE SERVICES OR DISSEMINATION IN THE UNITED STATES./

TORONTO, Dec. 28, 2018 /CNW/ - GeneNews Limited (TSX:GEN) ("GeneNews" or the "Company") today announced it has an agreement with Three Rivers Provider Network (TRPN) for Innovative Diagnostic Laboratory (IDL's) tests for early cancer detection. Three Rivers Provider Network is a rapidly growing proprietary provider network with 200 million lives that have access to IDL services through the TRPN network of providers, hospitals and ancillary facilities. The ability to address diagnostic gaps in early cancer detection saves lives and money for providers and patients in this network through access to IDL proprietary tests.

GeneNews/IDL has also entered into an agreement with MultiPlan Inc., one of the most comprehensive providers of healthcare cost management solutions that includes primary, complementary and out-of-network strategies for managing the financial risks associated with healthcare claims. MultiPlan contracts with 900,000 healthcare providers across the Unites States and has an estimated 60 million consumers accessing MultiPlan network products.

"We are pleased to announce that we are successfully establishing agreements with regional and national commercial health insurance networks, like Three Rivers and MultiPlan, resulting in expanded access to our four early cancer diagnostic tests – ColonSentry®, EarlyCDT®-lung, Prostate Health Index (phi) and BreastSentry," said James R Howard-Tripp, Chairman and CEO of GeneNews. "This expanded access is benefitting all parties - patients, their providers and ourselves, as more efficient processing of claims becomes fully established."

GeneNews/IDL is in discussion with several other regional and national commercial health insurance networks, as well as self-funded employer plans.

Additionally, GeneNews is preparing for a very active first Quarter in 2019, with plans already in place for screening of high-risk employee groups, implementation of screening within large healthcare groups and, collaborating with one or more large, physician networks. In addition, we will begin initial roll-out of the re-branding of our company which, together with an expanded Direct to Consumer focus, will allow us to more fully provide our early cancer diagnostic tests to the many patients who contact us.

Second Convertible Security Funding Agreement:

GeneNews has also entered into a second Convertible Security Funding Agreement (the "Agreement") with Lind Asset Management XI, LLC ("Lind") for CDN$500,000 in convertible securities.

Under the terms of the Agreement, Lind will advance CDN$500,000, less a closing fee of CDN$35,000, in consideration for the issuance by the Company of a convertible security with a face value of CDN$600,000 (the "Convertible Security"), which is expected to occur within ten (10) business days, subject to satisfaction of certain closing conditions.

"This injection of cash is welcome and will allow the Company to accelerate its initiatives with large healthcare providers to increase the rate of implementation, as well as begin rebranding. We are very pleased to have the partners within Lind continue to support us in this way," said Howard-Tripp.

The Convertible Security has a 30-month term from the date of issuance and bears interest of 8% per annum.

The Company's obligations under the Agreement are secured by all of the Company's present and after-acquired property other than intellectual property, including a pledge of its equity interests in its subsidiaries. In addition, the Company's indirect subsidiary, Innovative Diagnostic Laboratory, LLP, has pledged its present and after-acquired property, other than intellectual property.

Lind may convert the Convertible Security in monthly installments over the term at a conversion price equal to 85% of the 5-day trailing volume-weighted average price ("VWAP") of the Company's common shares on the TSX prior to the date that notice of conversion is provided by Lind. The Agreement contains restrictions on the amount of the Convertible Security that may be converted in any particular month and how many common shares of GeneNews Lind may hold at any given time. Lind is entitled to accelerate its conversion right to the full amount of the face value or demand repayment of the face value of the Convertible Security in cash upon a default and other specified events. To the extent that the full face value of the Convertible Security has not been converted at maturity, the balance of the face value is to be paid in cash at the end of the 30-month term.

The Company has the option to buy-back the Convertible Security in cash at any time by paying a buy-back premium equal to 5% of the outstanding balance of the Convertible Security.

In addition, the Company has agreed to issue 18,889,308 warrants to Lind in respect of the Convertible Security, exercisable for 36 months at an exercise price of $0.0344 per share. The number of warrants issued in connection with the Convertible Security are equal to 100% of the amount advanced by Lind ($500,000) divided by the VWAP of the common shares of the Company on the TSX for the five trading days immediately preceding the execution date of the Agreement. The Warrants provide for cashless exercise by the holder in the event that the Company ceases to be a foreign private issuer, as that term is defined under the United States Securities Act of 1933.

The Agreement and the issuance of the Convertible Security thereunder have been conditionally approved by the TSX and are subject to satisfaction of customary closing conditions.

10 SIMPLE WAYS TO AVOID THE FLU BUG

By Eddie Fatakhov, M.D. (aka Dr. Fat-Off)

The holidays of 2018 have come and gone and, as many of us go back to work and are again surrounded by sniffling and coughing people, giving and receiving the ‘gift’ that keeps on giving: The Flu.

While it’s important to remember that ‘tis still the season for colds and flu, the good news is that if you follow these suggested preventions/precautions, the flu isn’t a give you have to receive.

Here are 10 simple ways to significantly decrease your chances of getting colds and even worse - the flu in 2019.

1.) Wash your hands

Think of every communal thing you touch on a daily basis - doors and door knobs, stair rails, other people, countertops, restaurant chairs… the list goes on and on. Because we are so hands-on the chances of spreading cold germs and flu virus is very high.

Combatting this spread is simple - wash your hands frequently and make sure you are doing it correctly!

2.) Clean communal surfaces

Many studies have been done to find the presence of viruses on shared surfaces in places like classrooms and airports. These studies all found breeding grounds for germs and viruses. While you might not be able to disinfect your schools and airports you can clean your home and office areas.

The use of a simple disinfectant wipe on light switches, doorknobs, phones, computer keyboards, and TV remotes can minimize exposure to germs and viruses for you, your loved ones, and your coworkers.

3.) Avoid touching your face, eyes and mouth

The best ways to transmit germs and viruses from surfaces and your hands is to touch your face - specifically your mouth and eyes. This direct introduction can lead to cold, flu, and other illness such as respiratory infection. So if you are a nail biter, sandwich eater, nose wiper, or eye rubber, either take a break from these actions or increase your hand washing even more.

4.) Use Hand Sanitizer

For those times when you don’t have access to soap and water grab the hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer is a convenient and helpful tool for disinfecting your hands to prevent flu and cold viruses.

5.) Get Sleep

You immune system is your main line of defense against cold and flu and sleep deprivation is a major hindrance to your immune system. Not only will getting enough sleep help your body defend itself it will also increase your energy during the day.

6.) Exercise

In addition to helping you feel great working out is beneficial for a lot of reasons, including boosting your immune system. Reducing excess weight can be key when preventing colds and the flu since many studies have shown that overweight and obese people are more susceptible to injury and illness.

7.) Don’t be around sick people

If there is someone in your house or office who is coughing or sneezing try to keep your distance. This might be difficult at home (take all other precautions) but at work try suggesting the sick person stay home. Talking to your employer about making a plan for keeping sick people out of your workspace is a great way to keep employees healthy while also increasing productivity within a healthy workforce.

In addition - don’t be that guy. If you feel sick find a way to stay home.

8.) Cover your nose and mouth

Covering your nose and mouth while sneezing and coughing is a great way to prevent the flu and other serious respiratory illnesses, like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), whooping cough, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), that are spread by cough, sneezing, or unclean hands. Remember to wash your hands after you cover!

9 & 10.) Eat healthy, stay hydrated and take probiotics

Eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water are two ways to support your hardworking immune system. Think fruits, vegetables, lean proteins like turkey, and complex carbohydrates when planning your meals.

In addition, increase your water intake to help your body flush toxins and add probiotics via diet or supplements to help fight any “bad” bacteria with “good” bacteria (recent studies have found that probiotics might help prevent upper respiratory infections in children).

11.) The flu shot

The CDC recommends getting a flu shot annually. Some studies have shown that the flu vaccine can decrease the chances of healthy adults contracting the flu by as much as 40% to 60%. While the flu vaccine isn’t guaranteed to prevent the flu for everyone some experts believe it can lessen the severity and duration of flu symptoms.
