Summer Smart Sunshine Tips to Boost Vitamin D Levels

TORONTO, Ont. (April 6, 2017) – The daylight hours are getting longer, the sun is getting stronger and summer is just around the corner. Make this the year that you optimize your vitamin D levels through effective sun exposure. Enjoy the health benefits and disease prevention from optimal vitamin D levels and learn to control your risks from sun exposure.

Vitamin D is made naturally in your body when UVB rays from the sun convert cholesterol in your skin to pre-vitamin D3. We make about 90% of our vitamin D from UVB sun exposure. UVB rays are short and only reach the earth when the sun is directly above us. We can’t make vitamin D in the winter in Canada because the sun is at too low of an angle and the UVB rays are absorbed in the atmosphere.

You make vitamin D in Canada between the months of May and October. The best time for exposure is around midday, between 10am and 2pm, when the UV index is above 3 and your shadow is shorter than your height. The further you get from noon, the lower the amount of vitamin D you’ll make. The sun’s visible light may penetrate through glass, but UVB light will not therefore you will not make vitamin D.

Full body sun exposure at non-burning levels can create between 10,000-25,000 IU of vitamin D in your skin. You can never get too much vitamin D from the sun as your skin self regulates itself, whereas ingesting vitamin D does not have the same control. In addition, vitamin D that you make from the sun lasts twice as long in your body as vitamin D taken through supplements or food.

Statistics Canada reports that Canadian vitamin D levels have dropped by 10% over the past six years. The root cause of this decrease is lower sunshine exposure. People are just not getting outside around midday in the summer and making vitamin D and when they are outside they are using sunscreen which if applied correctly prevents 95%+ of vitamin D production.

In Canada, 12 million Canadians (35%) have vitamin D blood levels below the recommendations from Health Canada. This puts these people at a higher risk for several diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and many more. In fact, a study completed in 2016 reported that if Canadians increased their vitamin D levels to the recommended level of 100 nmol/L, we would save $12.5B in healthcare costs and 23,000 premature deaths annually.

A recent study reported that women who avoided the sun have twice the risk of all cause death. The authors said that “avoidance of sun exposure is a risk factor for death of a similar magnitude as smoking.”

Skin cancer is a concern and risk of sun exposure must be managed and balanced with the benefits from vitamin D and other photoproducts. Research has shown that people with higher sun exposure such as outdoor workers, who have 3-10 times the sun exposure as indoor workers, have a lower incidence of melanoma. The National Cancer Institute reports that melanoma risk is increased as a result of intermittent acute sun exposure leading to sunburn. People who are a skin type 1, with white or very pale skin colour, red or blonde hair colour and who always burn and never tan, should severely limit their sun exposure.

The Vitamin D Society offers the following tips:

  • Know your own skin and skin type. Don’t burn. Never overexpose yourself.
  • Acclimatize or condition your skin for sun exposure by gradually building or lengthening exposure times as your skin begins to tan to reduce your risk of burning
  • Prevent burning and overexposure when required through the use of hats, clothing, shade and sunscreens
  • For vitamin D get sun exposure at midday, between 10am and 2pm, when the UV index is above 3 and your shadow is shorter than your height
  • Expose more skin for a shorter period of time to generate more vitamin D while reducing your risk of overexposure.

It’s important to manage the risk and enjoy the rewards of moderate sun exposure for good health. Cancer Research UK, through the Consensus Vitamin D Position Statement, offers the following recommendation: “Enjoy the sun safely while taking care not to burn, can help provide the benefits of vitamin D without unduly raising the risk of skin cancer.”

“This advice may go against what current health organizations recommend,” says Perry Holman, Executive Director of the Vitamin D Society. “They typically recommend you stay out of the sun at midday and use sunscreen when outdoors. But this would reduce your potential vitamin D production and does not consider the benefits as well as the risks of sun exposure on overall health. You need to have balance.”

About the Vitamin D Society:

The Vitamin D Society is a Canadian non-profit group organized to increase awareness of the many health conditions strongly linked to vitamin D deficiency; encourage people to be proactive in protecting their health and have their vitamin D levels tested annually; and help fund valuable vitamin D research. The Vitamin D Society recommends people achieve and maintain optimal 25(OH)D blood levels between 100 – 150 nmol/L (Can) or 40-60 ng/ml (USA).

Twenty years ago, we hardly heard of ADHD, an acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Today, the term ADHD is so loosely used that anytime anyone feels they are unfocused, overly scheduled or mentally cluttered they may say “I’m so ADHD”, but are they? When is it just a simple lack of focus due to stress or bad habits and when might it be ADHD?

Dr. Sanam Hafeez, a NYC based licensed clinical neuropsychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services specializes in ADHD and other learning disorders. She offers some characteristics that when chronic tendencies could mean ADHD and is worth getting screened for it.

  1. You have NO filter and are highly impulsive.

Being candid, bold, opinionated is one thing and many people with strong personalities possess these traits. If you find you are getting into frequent arguments with family, friends and co-workers who accuse you of not thinking before speaking or acting, then there could be more going on. “You have to look at how certain behaviors impact the general well-being of your life, explains, Dr. Hafeez. If you are unable to keep a job, and 50% of people with ADHD struggle to do so, then it would be wise to get an assessment for ADHD,” she says. "People who find they consistently miss deadlines and simply forget or rush through them without a careful eye on quality of the output are red flags. Of course, there are other psychological considerations and implications but having an ADHD assessment is a good suggests Dr. Hafeez.”

  1. You’re constantly putting out fires.

People with adult ADHD frequently lose important papers, documents on their computers or their personal belongings like cell phone, credit cards, keys etc. They find they consistently miss appointments, arrive to work late, feel disorganized and scattered. This inattention to the details of life leads to being in crisis mode cleaning up your own messes. According to Dr. Hafeez this is a recipe for high stress, poor confidence, second guessing oneself, and low self-esteem. "When you are constantly cleaning up mistakes or apologizing for lateness you start to question your abilities and judgment. This is the uneasiness that may even lead to depression if adult ADHD isn’t properly diagnosed and treated with the help of a trained licensed therapist who specializes in ADHD,” cautions Dr. Hafeez.

  1. You are either easily distracted or off in your own world.

ADHD often has people focusing in two different ways. First, they may have such trouble focusing that they can’t sit through meetings at work, dinners with family or friends, can’t remain engaged in conversations and just feel antsy and always onto the next thing. The second way ADHD impacts focus is where they are so immersed and deeply focused in something that everything else around them is non-existent. “Someone who is in this hyperfocused state can easily lose track of time, their kids, and other commitments because when you have ADHD, nothing is more important than what you are on hyperfocused on,” explains Dr. Hafeez. She goes on to say that people with ADHD feel they “lost time” because they were focused on one thing for so long and didn't realize where the time went.

  1. You feel like there’s never enough time for anything.

This is because people with ADHD typically overschedule themselves and under-estimate the time it takes for certain tasks. Time management is a big challenge for people with adult ADHD. They often add to their anxiety by creating unrealistic to-do lists then struggle to get things accomplished because they’re distracted. Anxiety is often an overlapping condition, as are obsessive compulsive traits. “There’s a self-defeating cycle going on where they take on too much then feel inadequate when things aren’t completed. They frequently say that there aren’t enough hours in the day,” says Dr. Hafeez.

It is important to really do your research and be honest with your overall quality of life. Then seek out a professional who can offer a detailed assessment which is the first step to diagnosing and effectively treating ADHD. “It is never just one thing. When I offer a thorough assessment, using not just a very comprehensive interview but a complex battery of standardized tests that measures brain functioning, I discover loads of information the patient never saw coming, and so the treatment I design is accurate, long lasting, and can bring about lasting change,” Dr. Hafeez says.

Many women across the world have started businesses from scratch, and they are now very successful. Writing Content for Blogs

To be excellent in blogging, you will have to be patient and accept that you are starting from scratch. The best bloggers have excellent reading and writing skills. Start by improving these skills, and you will be headed to greatness. You will have a significant number of followers on your blog, if you create great content.

No one wants to read boring content. You must be interesting, and leave your readers wanting for more of your content. You should be able to brand yourself by understanding your target audience and what they want. If you decide to jot a blog about a product, do the following:

  • Research the product thoroughly
  • Take photos of the product (in use, if possible)
  • Write an engaging and active piece of content
  • Be sure to utilize your followers on social media. These are the people who can make your blog big.
  • If you can write excellent content, companies will come looking for you. Then, and you will be guaranteed to become a girl boss.

Offering Academic Services

There are many kids out there struggling with their assignments and working to keep up with the increasing demands of education. As today’s children are faced with ever-increasing academic qualifications, you can certainly earn cash by tutoring and build a business there as well. You can reference the myriad of how-to videos on YouTube or use tutorials that will assist you and your students to improve your skills.

If you have a more advanced education (possibly you hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree) you can take more complex tasks like writing projects for people who are busy at work. When coaching children, it is helpful to understand how to motivate them to do their best.

Managing Social Media Accounts

There are prominent people in the world who use social media to do business or get in touch with people. If you happen to be one of them, then you already know the ins and outs of the trade and may as well help others along in the process. This is something that certainly should not be done for free, even for friends! If they just don’t have time to do it themselves, incorporate the management of their accounts into things you already do for your own. Big businesses, also, seek people to manage their social media pages.

Most likely, you love social media, but you have never thought of it as purely a business opportunity. You can run a great business by providing these firms and prominent people with excellent service in regards to managing their social media platforms, while still using the majority of your time to focus on your own and build your social media presence.

Personal Training / Coaching Services

Personal Trainers and Instructors are needed in everything from Yoga to Zumba, so there are ways to break into this realm even for the most amateur fitness aficionado. This is certainly not for everyone, but if you are someone who has built a life out of fitness it is the first place you should start. Get in touch with people at your local gym, reach out to personal trainers, and follow in the footsteps of others who have come before you. The most important thing is to pursue something that you are passionate about!

Healthy Vegan Diet for Weight Loss

Losing weight on a natural vegan diet is often very easy. This is because fruits and vegetables generally contain fewer calories than foods made with animal products. There is a difference between losing weight and losing fat. Most people want to maintain their muscle mass: This can be a little difficult with a vegan diet because complete proteins are found in meat, eggs and dairy. However, you can still utilize the partial proteins in fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts to get the complete protein you need. A vegan diet will actually add a more variety to your eating habits.

Planning Your Vegan Diet Needs

You'll want to use a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Bodybuilding.com has a great list of complete vegan proteins that you can include in your diet. There are countless vegan recipes for you to try. Consume high protein foods that will give you a sense of satiety and avoid foods with processed sugars, as certain types of sugars will spike your insulin and trigger your body to store more fat than it should. A balanced vegan diet that contains only natural sugars is ideal. Taking a multivitamin that is specially formulated for vegans is also a great idea. Create a list of twenty good meals that you can cycle through on a monthly basis. You can always add more in the future, but creating a varied diet plan will ensure that you won't get bored and fall back on meat and animal products.

Reading Food Labels

You'll want to be careful when you purchase processed foods because many have hidden meat and dairy ingredients. PETA has a great list of apps that will help you select vegan foods. Make sure that you avoid added sugars and trans fats. The best ingredients that a vegan can buy are whole foods. Spending an hour in the kitchen to prepare weekly meals from whole foods is a great idea: You can make large batches of vegan soup and pasta, but avoid canned pasta sauces because these may contain added cheese and rennet.

Calories, Carbohydrates and Fat

The major rules about weight loss are pretty much set in stone. Reducing your calories will cause your body to burn up fat stores. Consuming fat usually does not make you fat. Eating a lot of carbohydrates will slow your weight loss because your body is going to be burning off the carbohydrates before it accesses the fat stores. Roughly thirty percent of your calories should be carbohydrates. Avocado is a great vegan food because it has high calories and very few carbs. You can use a calorie calculator like this one to determine how many calories you need to safely lose fat. You can always do cardiovascular exercise to burn off excess calories as well.
