TSSA Reminds Ontarians Not to Fall Behind on Carbon Monoxide Safety

Ontario, Canada, Nov. 01, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- It’s Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week in Ontario and safety experts are urging people not to fall behind on CO safety. Often dubbed the ‘Silent Killer’ you won’t even know if it’s there as it’s an invisible, odourless and highly poisonous gas.

“With the onset of cold weather months comes the increased use of furnaces and fireplaces and now outdoor heaters,” says Sam Sadeghi, Director of TSSA’s Fuels Safety Program. “If not installed, inspected and maintained regularly, fuel-burning appliances can emit deadly levels of CO gas.”

Over 65% of all CO injuries and deaths in Ontario occur in homes and most if not all are preventable.  Most residences have 4-6 fuel-burning appliances. They require annual inspections by certified fuel technicians to prevent them from producing deadly levels of CO.

Take Action, Think Safe:

  • Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a certified fuel technician.
  • Install certified CO alarms in your home, regularly test them and replace in accordance with manufacturer’s instruction.

“Safety is a shared responsibility” adds Sadeghi, and by taking these actions we can lower CO risks in our homes.”

Know the symptoms of CO poisoning. They are similar to the flu – nausea, headache, burning eyes, confusion and drowsiness – except there is no fever. If these symptoms appear, it is imperative to get everyone outside to fresh air immediately and call 911 or the local fire department.

Last but not least, as we prepare to set our clocks back this coming weekend, remember to test your CO alarms and replace batteries and/or unit(s) as required. While we may be turning back an hour, we don’t want to fall behind in being CO safe.

With the hope that multiple voices will bring greater impact to the message, TSSA continues to partner with other safety-minded organizations such as the Hawkins-Gignac Foundation for CO Education and local fire and emergency services departments to deliver critical CO safety information to residents in communities across Ontario.

Important Benefits of Eating Breakfast

For many people, skipping breakfast has become a normal part of the workaday world. During a morning rush to the office or to school, it can feel easy enough to save time by skipping out on the day's first meal. But skipping breakfast can affect us in a wide variety of different ways. Without a healthy meal to start the day, for example, we'll feel tired and struggle to concentrate. In the long-term, we'll miss out on healthy vitamins and nutrients. So here are just three great reasons to make breakfast a regular part of your morning routine!

Close up of healthy continental breakfast with fresh fruit and ground coffee.

Breakfast Makes You Smarter

Have you ever noticed that it can feel like your brain is moving slower if you haven't had anything to eat in the morning? For a real brain boost, try eating a protein-rich breakfast the next time you have an exam or a big project to do at work. You can bet that your mind will move more quickly and that you'll be better prepared for any challenge that comes your way. To make a morning routine more fun, some people even customize their breakfasts to include their favorite foods or even incorporate leftovers. If you’re too busy in the mornings to cook, consider visiting a local restaurant like National Coney Island in your area.

Breakfast Helps You Wake Up

When we eat breakfast, we are literally "breaking the fast" that our bodies have been experiencing while we've slept. As you might imagine, going all night without eating can leave your body jonesing for food and the energy that food brings us. So if you really want to get going in the morning, it is difficult to get the energy you need without eating a healthy breakfast. Facing a long day at the office is difficult enough as it is; breakfast will help you wake up and feel the energy you need to make the day a success!

Breakfast Keeps You Healthy

A solid breakfast is a part of a healthy approach to eating. We all need to consume a certain number of calories per day to keep our bodies healthy, and breakfast occupies an important place in any good nutrition regimen. If you want to give your body the energy it needs, breakfast can and should be a priority! After all, we are what we eat!

So there you have it: Although some people don't give it enough credit, breakfast is perhaps the single most important meal of the day. A good breakfast will help us start our day off right and will keep us healthy in the long-term to boot! Good breakfast foods will help us stay alert and focused. They also taste great!

The First and Only Tazarotene Lotion indicated for Acne Vulgaris in Patients 10 Years of Age and Older, ARAZLO™ now Available for Patients by Prescription across Canada

Shown to provide strong efficacy with good tolerability profile

LAVAL, QC, Oct. 28, 2021 /CNW Telbec/ - Bausch Health, Canada, which is part of Bausch Health Companies Inc. (NYSE: BHC) (TSX: BHC) ("Bausch Health" or the "Company"), and its dermatology division, one of the largest prescription dermatology health care businesses in Canada, today announced that its new topical prescription treatment for acne vulgaris (common acne), ARAZLOTM (tazarotene) lotion, 0.045% w/w, for patients 10 years of age and older1 is now available across Canada.

ARAZLO is the first tazarotene 0.045% w/w lotion treatment formulated with PRISMATREXTM technology approved by Health Canada that delivers the benefits of tazarotene in a formulation with known hydrating and moisturizers to effectively treat acne with demonstrated efficacy and tolerability.1

"We are very pleased that ARAZLO is now available for prescription by doctors across Canada as an important new option for them to help treat the approximately 5.6 million Canadians who are impacted by acne,"2 said Ginette Gagné, Interim President and General Manager, Bausch Health, Canada. "We are proud to be expanding our already large dermatology portfolio to better help meet Canadians' needs."

"The availability of ARAZLO provides an important new addition to how we can help our patients with acne by providing access to treatment by the powerful retinoid tazarotene in a lotion form that will help limit the dryness and irritation that has historically been a barrier to its long-term use by patients," 3 said Dr. Benjamin Barankin, MD, FRCPC, FAAD – Dermatologist, Toronto, Ontario. "It is a very useful and positive step forward for the treatment of acne."

ARAZLO is a lightweight non-greasy lotion that uses a polymeric emulsification system (PRISMATREX), which maintains the emulsion droplets size distribution stable across time and temperature. This system provides stable emulsions by anchoring its hydrophobic portions and forming an adsorbed gel layer around each oil droplet.1

ARAZLO is the third new dermatology treatment from Bausch Health approved by Health Canada in just over 12 months. The other approvals were for BRYHALI™ (halobetasol propionate lotion 0.01% w/w), a high to super-high potency topical corticosteroid indicated for corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses and the topical treatment of plaque psoriasis, and DUOBRII™ (0.01% w/w halobetasol propionate and 0.045% w/w tazarotene) to treat adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.4

All three treatments – ARAZLO, BRYHALI and DUOBRII – are manufactured at Bausch Health's Laval, Quebec, facility for Canada and the United States.

ARAZLO Comprehensive Clinical Data
The Health Canada approval for ARAZLO was based on data from two pivotal Phase 3 multicentre, randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled clinical trials in 1,614 patients with moderate to severe acne. In both Phase 3 studies, all primary efficacy endpoints were met with statistical significance (p<.001).

The Impact of Daylight saving on your sleep

Montreal, QC, October 27th 2021 -- On November 7th we will turn our clocks back an hour to end daylight saving time. Does it hurt your sleep? You bet. Your body operates on a natural sleep-wake cycle called your circadian rhythm. Any time this gets disturbed, your sleep can suffer, making you more tired and less alert.

HALEO has developed a virtual Sleep Clinic that Delivers professional treatment for insomnia and poor sleep without setting foot in a clinic and taking time off work.

For a 1-hour time change, it typically takes your body about a day to adjust. But researchers have found that some individual’s bodies may take months to fully adjust.

HALEO helps you get back to healthy sleep. They offer clinically proven and personalized programs to improve your sleep by videoconference or chat with a licensed healthcare professional.

HALEO has built a unique end-to-end solution for employers who wish to reduce the impact of sleep disorders on their organizations. The solution has one of the highest utilizations seen in workplace wellness solutions, with over 25% of the employee population engaging with the solution. Packaged in an easy-to-roll-out format and with precise data on utilization, employers with the HALEO program see a 10 to 20x return on their investment.

Some advice to minimize the daylight-saving impacts:

Adjust your sleeping environment:

Your bedroom should be a peaceful place. Body temperature drops at night (which is part of your "circadian rhythms") which promotes sleep. Keep your bedroom a little cooler than the rest of the house. Make sure your bed and linens are comfortable, the bedroom is soundproof and dark enough to promote the secretion of melatonin. Don't be afraid to take the time to make some cosmetic changes; if you like space, you will spend a lot of time there!

Do not work in the bedroom

A distinction between the space you sleep in and the space you work in is necessary, especially if you have trouble sleeping. Don't use your bed for work! Instead, find a "peaceful environment". The past year has brought household changes for many people; if you have no choice and need to work in your bedroom, limit the space and set up your desk away from the bed.

Avoid a few hours before going to bed

Avoid screens, caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine before going to bed. Whenever possible take a screen break at least an hour before going to bed.

Some interesting figures:

-       Over 50% of Canadians currently have symptoms of insomnia.

-       A person with a sleep disorder will have an average of 10 days of absence per year, and their productivity will be impacted on average 45 days per year.

The HALEO protocol takes just 5 weeks, and most participants see improvement

 in 2 to 3 weeks.

About Haleo Clinic

Founded in 2015, HALEO is an online sleep clinic whose mission is to provide access to quality care based on scientifically proven solutions for those suffering from insomnia or other sleep disorders. Its clinical experts provide personalized professional treatments supported by clinical research and accessible via a mobile application.  The services offered, ranging from screening to the management of sleep disorders, help improve the health and performance of thousands of people across Canada by helping them overcome their sleep problems.

Ontario Medical Association releases five-point plan for better health care

Reporters can register to attend a news conference on Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m.-noon.

TORONTO, Oct. 26, 2021 /CNW/ - A new analysis by the Ontario Medical Association found the COVID-19 pandemic created a staggering backlog of almost 20 million health-care services, including doctors' visits, diagnostic tests, treatments and surgeries.

This backlog is based on OHIP data from the start of the pandemic in March 2020 to September 2021. It will take years to clear, even if doctors and other health-care professionals worked even more days and longer hours and there were more ORs, hospital beds and other resources to support them.

It's in addition to pre-pandemic wait times that were well above recommended timelines for many procedures. And it doesn't address the other cracks in the health-care system that widened during the pandemic. It doesn't  include the looming mental health tsunami or the patients who were not diagnosed or treated during the pandemic and now are showing up sicker and requiring more aggressive treatment.

The OMA offers solutions for all these issues in a sweeping new report that aims to reverse the decline in Ontario's health-care system over the next four years and make the province a national and global leader.

Prescription for Ontario: Doctors' Five-Point Plan for Better Health Care is the result of the broadest consultation in the OMA's 140-year history. More than 110 health-care organizations, social service agencies and community leaders provided input. Almost 8,000 Ontarians from 600 communities across the province shared their views through an online survey. Doctors representing a wide range of specialties and regions gave their expert advice.

"The urgent need to focus on solutions to improve patient care is a top priority for the profession," said OMA President Dr. Adam Kassam. "Physicians have a prescription for the future of health care and a roadmap to transformation for Ontario."

Fixing Ontario's health-care system will not be quick or easy, said OMA CEO Allan O'Dette, and neither doctors nor the provincial government can do it alone.

"It requires collaboration among health providers, support from the public, and political will, including significant investment from the federal government, including increased spending through the Canada Health Transfer to the provinces to cover 35 per cent of all health-care costs, up from the current 22 per cent," O'Dette said.

The new analysis of 20 million backlogged health-care services is the first time the OMA has reported on the full impact of the pandemic from its official start in March 2020 until September.

The backlog and estimated time to catch up on five of the most common medical procedures – assuming doctors worked 120 per cent more hours than they did before the pandemic is as follows:

  • 30 months for knee replacements (52,492 people waiting)
  • 25 months for cataract surgeries (108,736)
  • 19 months for hip replacements (22,308)
  • 14 months for heart bypass surgery (4,296)
  • 11 months for MRIs (502,476)

Compounding the backlog is the fact that Ontario spends less on health care per capita than any other province in Canada except British Columbia, according to data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. This is a situation that has been 30 years in the making, due to a decrease in per capita spending in the 1990s, flat spending between 2012 and 2016 and spending below the minimum required to keep pace with demand in other years. Ontario's per capita health-care spending is about 8 per cent lower than the average of other provinces, according to CIHI.

The province also needs more doctors, personal support workers and other health-care professionals at a time when many are retiring or leaving the profession because of burnout exacerbated by working on the front lines of the pandemic.

Ontario ranks seventh among Canadian provinces in number of family doctors per 100,000 patients (2.3) and, if it were a country, would have one of the lowest doctor-to-population rankings among OECD countries (29 out of 33). The shortage is especially acute in northern and rural areas.

The OMA, which represents Ontario's 43,000 physicians, has developed recommendations in five key areas to fix the gap in the health-care system:

  • Reduce the backlog of services and reduce wait times
  • Expand mental health and addiction programs in the community
  • Improve and expand home care and other community care
  • Strengthen public health and pandemic preparedness
  • Give every patient a team of health-care providers, and link them digitally

The OMA plan also addresses the unique health-care challenges in northern Ontario. Ontario's doctors are also calling for immediate action on climate change to mitigate its severe consequences on human health and well-being.

Note: A full media kit with an infographic and audiovisual clips is available.

About the OMA
The Ontario Medical Association represents Ontario's 43,000 plus physicians, medical students and retired physicians, advocating for and supporting doctors while strengthening the leadership role of doctors in caring for patients. Our vision is to be the trusted voice in transforming Ontario's health-care system.

MedFuture announces the launch of the Agemeter Vitality Index

MIRABEL,QC, Oct. 26, 2021 /CNW Telbec/ - Medfuture is pleased to announce the launch of its Agemeter Vitality Index, which is used to estimate a person's biological age and can be used as a benchmark for health professionals who accompany people who want to take preventive action for their health with personalized action plans.

Founded in 2018, Medfuture, has quickly established itself in Quebec as the leader in home blood collection services, following the acquisition of Myrrha Santé in February 2019. The company, which aims to position itself as a key player in the field of preventive health, has since multiplied its initiatives by diversifying its product and service offering, taking advantage of technological advances in the field of biotechnology.

By the age of 35, many of the functions that are essential to everyday life begin to decline, at different rates for different people and with different consequences. Genetic, environmental and lifestyle components - diet, physical activity, smoking, sleep hygiene - are involved in this aging process, which can lead to chronic diseases, cancers, and other disabling conditions.

"We are currently observing a worldwide trend in favor of prevention in the health field. Some countries are even in the process of identifying aging as a disease on which we will be able to act and thus, reduce the costs of care in the public health system," says Amélie Paquette, Executive Director of Medfuture. "With the help of technological innovations developed in recent years, it is now possible to measure several biomarkers of aging, to create individual aging scores and thus, to assess the impact of interventions designed to modify the trajectory of aging of a person to make it more favorable."

The Agemeter Vitality Index is an innovative test developed in collaboration with a team of physicians and researchers who are experts in the non-invasive evaluation of aging. Deployed on a mobile application and lasting about 20 minutes, it is composed of six tests, associated with functions that decline with age: memory, hearing, decision making time, reaction time, movement speed and coordination.

Medfuture also announces that it will make its customer portal available in early 2022; this portal will offer customers a dashboard of past blood work history. This dashboard will show trends and trajectories of each biomarker at a glance and thus, adjust customers' action plans to act preventively.

The longevity industry, estimated at $17 trillion, is exploding, and the market opportunity will reach $27 trillion by 2026, according to experts. The fields of integrative medicine, gerosciences, nutraceuticals, regenerative medicine, gene therapies and connected health are gaining momentum, mainly due to advances in artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, robotics and cognitive sciences.

About Medfuture Clinic Inc.
Medfuture specializes in the longevity field by helping people who actively seek control over their health, their most precious possession, to live an optimal and long life. Medfuture is a facilitator that aims to slow, stop or reverse the consequences of aging using tools to measure biomarkers related to the processes involved and concrete preventive actions, all with the use of advanced technologies and the practice of personalized medicine. OPG harvests life-saving medical isotope at Pickering Nuclear

About half the world's Cobalt-60 comes from Ontario's nuclear plants

PICKERING, ON, Oct. 26, 2021 /CNW/ - Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has successfully completed another harvest of Cobalt-60 (Co-60) at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, continuing a decades-long program of producing this life-saving medical isotope.

Co-60 is used in medical radiotherapy, such as in treating cancer. About 40 per cent of the world's single-use medical devices, such as syringes, gloves, implants, and surgical instruments, are sterilized with Co-60.

Once harvested, the isotope is loaded into flasks and shipped to Nordion, a health-sciences company in Ottawa, where it is manufactured into a finished product and shipped for use around the world. The Pickering station has been an integral part of Nordion's Co-60 supply for decades, contributing to the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide.

OPG is expanding its production of Co-60 to Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. Implementing Co-60 production at Darlington Nuclear after Pickering Nuclear ceases operations will replace Pickering Nuclear's capacity and provide increased production to meet global demand.

Quick Facts

  • The isotope extracted from a single Pickering reactor every 24 to 30 months can yield enough Co-60 to sterilize approximately 3.5 billion syringes per harvest.
  • With three Pickering reactors equipped to produce Co-60, there are one to two harvests per year.
  • Learn more about OPG and medical isotopes.

Quotes
"We are proud of our long history of supplying medical isotopes to the entire world from the Pickering plant – and this latest harvest of Cobalt-60 is especially needed amid the current global pandemic, for crucial uses including sterilization of gloves and testing swabs," said Dominique Minière, OPG's Executive Vice President, New Nuclear Domestic and International Strategy. "OPG has a vital role to play in global health care, given that Ontario's CANDU reactors produce 50 per cent of the world's supply of Cobalt-60."

About OPG
As a global climate change leader and the largest, most diverse electricity generator in the province, OPG and its family of companies are helping lead the charge to a post-carbon economy.

Are Old Knee Injuries Getting in the Way of Your Workout?

Knee pain can linger long after an injury has healed as much as possible. While many people experience some degree of pain in their joints as they get older, you’ll want to pay attention if your discomfort keeps you from enjoying your favorite activities. Knee pain that stops you from doing your workout prevents you from taking care of your health. However, you can take steps to start improving how you feel each day.

Reduce the Strain You Place on Your Knees

The pain that you feel during your workout is impacted by the other things that you do each day. By adjusting your behavior, you can reduce the strain that you place on your knees. For example, asking for assistance when you lift heavy objects. You might also need to use a kneeling pad if you tend to get down on your knees for cleaning or gardening. Taking care of your knees throughout your day-to-day life can help to keep them more limber for when you are ready to exercise.

When your knees hurt, the last thing you want to do is pound the pavement. Look for gentler, low-impact exercises that reduce the shock that your knees have to absorb. Cycling is a great option for people who have knee pain. If your knee pain is severe, then you might also want to try water aerobics to reduce the load on your knees. Walking is typically more comfortable compared to jogging, and you can still burn calories and strengthen your muscles by planning for longer walks to make up for the difference in how much energy you expend during the workout.

Remember to Warm Up and Cool Down

Many knee injuries occur due to people rushing through their workouts. Those pre-workout stretches and slow movements help to loosen up tight muscles and ligaments around your knee. Doing a post-workout cool down also helps to prevent fluid from building up around your knees that increases your pain.

Explore Treatments to Correct Worn Out Knees

There sometimes comes a point where the cartilage is worn down so bad in your knees that normal precautions and self-care no longer work. Getting a knee replacement is a fairly routine procedure, and you can expect to regain your ability to do many of your favorite exercises after your recovery. As a part of your recovery, your treatment team will provide you with exercises to improve the use of your knee and help you continue to stay fit.

An old knee injury can cause problems many years later, and the pain will typically worsen over time as your body also deals with the wear and tear that comes with aging. Your comfort is important, and being able to exercise helps you to maintain your overall health. Remembering to listen to your body and take steps to improve how you feel makes it possible to get back to enjoying your workouts again.
