Benevity Releases Its Top 10 Charitable Causes Supported by Companies and Their People in 2021

$2.3 billion donated to global nonprofits amid ongoing pandemic

CALGARY, Alberta, Jan. 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Benevity, Inc., the leading provider of global corporate purpose software, today announced its annual top 10 causes and giving trends data for 2021, demonstrating that global events and crises continued to impact giving behaviors.

In 2021, nearly 1.6 million people from over 700 companies donated $2.3 billion on the Benevity platform to more than 200,000 nonprofit organizations around the world.

A year after the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice movement caused major shifts in giving and record-setting donation amounts through Benevity (a 63% increase in 2020 compared to 2019), in 2021 Benevity’s growing community of corporate clients maintained record-high levels of donations and support for a variety of humanitarian causes, indicating that purpose is becoming a strategic business imperative.

Key Findings

  • Nonprofits supporting India’s COVID-19 crisis received a groundswell of support, including Sewa International (ranked 10 vs. 375 in 2020), Give2Asia (23 vs. 63), Pratham USA (26 vs. 75) and Goonj (30 vs. 384).
  • The crisis in India also drove additional giving to UNICEF and was part of the reason the organization’s support through Benevity almost doubled year over year ($13.5 million vs. $7.3 million in 2020).
  • Causes fighting Asian hate, including Chinese for Affirmative Action and Asian Americans Advancing Justice, came into focus and moved from being ranked ~49,000 and ~76,000 to 34 and 36, respectively.
  • Five of the 10 top causes from 2020 remained on the list in 2021, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Red Cross, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Doctors Without Borders and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.
  • Five organizations moved off the top 10 list: NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Equal Justice Initiative, Thousand Currents, Feeding America and Armenia Fund.
  • Health-focused nonprofits, including national and state cancer societies, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Planned Parenthood, returned to the top 10 in 2021.

“When the Delta variant hit India last year, we saw companies and their employees mobilize to help,” said Birger Stamperdahl, Give2Asia’s President and CEO. “Their generosity made possible lifesaving projects that delivered oxygen concentrators, protective gear for health workers and emergency food rations to those hit hardest by the pandemic.”

“It looks like we are starting to experience a slight ‘return to normal’ in the causes that were supported last year,” said Sona Khosla, Benevity’s Chief Impact Officer. “Despite the change in the top 10 causes, we saw people continuing to leverage the power of their giving in times and places of need in 2021. Since the onset of the pandemic, we have seen a shift in behavior. That is, philanthropy is no longer just for the wealthy trying to change society or corporations trying to be seen as responsible. It’s also becoming entrenched as a way for new generations of purpose-driven individuals and companies to act on what matters.”

NEW ARTISANAL SEASONINGS BRAND AIMS TO INSPIRE MORE PLANT-BASED COOKING

Watson’s launches chef-crafted “clean” seasoning blends with six culinary flavors including a uniquely blended California Everything seasoning.

Los Angeles, CA—(January 20, 2022)—With over 70% of Americans cooking more since the pandemic, Southern California-based Watson’s Seasoning Blends are debuting their new line of “clean” and sustainably sourced spice blends for home chefs and heat-and-eaters everywhere.

It has often been reported that store bought spices are some of the dirtiest foods on the market as they frequently contain “mystery” ingredients, chemicals, and pesticides. Watson’s seasoning blends only use ingredients that consumers can identify and pronounce and are both sustainably and ethically sourced.

The company, which is female and minority founded and operated, was started by long time vegan, Lori Amos, along with her partner and husband Jim. “The idea for Watson’s—which is a loving nod to the man who coined the phrase “vegan”, Donald Watson—was conceived when I embarked upon a whole-food plant-based (WFPB) diet last year and I found I was quickly bored with the same-old, same-old tastes,” Lori states. “I realized there was a white space in finding a way to level up the taste of vegetables, potatoes, rice, and tofu without having to dig through a messy spice cupboard filled with unsustainable plastic jars.”

Since the founders run a marketing and PR firm that focuses on plant-based products, they see that sector going through an unprecedented and exciting explosion in popularity. What is missing, however, are “enhancement” products that will make it easy for people to ramp up the taste of their foods. Sensing that unique opportunity, launching Watson’s was a no-brainer to co-founder Jim Amos. “The beauty of our products is that you can use them to give store-bought favorites like Impossible and Beyond Burgers a hearty, robust flavor that elevates these foods to a whole new level. In addition, it allows the home chef to make their own using fresh legumes and grains in their pantry.” Jim continues, “Our seasoning blends are born out of love, love of food and love for our planet and its inhabitants.”

SEASONING BLENDS

  • California Everything: A love letter to the founders’ home region, an all-purpose blend that is a culinary sunshine kiss from the Golden State
  • Yumami: A hearty seasoning that brings a smoky, savory depth to every dish
  • Nudish: Crafted to elevate and complement (not overpower) the natural taste of foods
  • Furikake: The classic Japanese spice, now in a vegan version that features a special Pacific Ocean kelp
  • Italian blends: “Nord”, a Northern Italian blend for creamy, garlic infused dishes and “Sud” for umami, tomato and herb inspired cooking
  • Two Latin-American blends launching in March of 2022

All Watson’s bags are eco-friendly and their elegantly designed jars are made from UV-coated hand-blown glass, not eco-crippling plastic. In addition, Watson’s will donate part of the proceeds from each sale of their California Everything blend to the California Firefighters Benevolent Fund, which provides assistance and support to California firefighters displaced or impacted by fire or natural disaster.

AT A GLANCE

  • Individual 3.4-3.85 oz. seasoning bags retail for $14.50 each
  • Italian UV designer display bottles retail for $19.50 each
  • Seasoning bag + display bottle retail for $34.50
  • Gift boxes start at $37.50
  • Vegan, Non-GMO, organic, and traceably sourced throughout the drying process
  • Purchase direct at tastewatsons.com

“We wanted to find a way to make it easier for consumers—whether they be vegan, flexitarian or omnivore—to enjoy eating fresh, healthy, less processed food by making these dishes more flavorful and even crave-worthy,” Lori adds. “My decades of experience marketing iconic global food brands has made me realize that people want an elevated culinary experience with unique flavors that focus both on health (theirs and the planet) as well as on their palate. They want the best of both worlds and that’s what we’ve given them with Watson’s.”

ABOUT WATSON’S

Started in 2021, Watson’s Seasoning Blends is a female and minority owned and operated artisanal food company based in Los Angeles, California. Former ad executive Founder Lori Amos and her partner, entertainment executive Jim Amos, aim to make fresh, healthy food taste as delicious as possible so that people will prefer real food versus unhealthy and highly processed offerings. Ontario Institute for Regenerative Medicine (OIRM) - Urgent Appeal to The Government of Ontario

NOW IS THE TIME
TO SUPPORT REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

TORONTO, Jan. 19, 2022 /CNW/ - As The Government of Ontario prepares its 2022 Spring Budget, OIRM is raising awareness of the massive losses expected if critically important sector funding is not continued.

At OIRM, we understand the unprecedented financial challenges facing Ontario, particularly in the healthcare sector, and this makes it even more vital that we take full advantage of the vast potential of Ontario's newly established Regenerative Medicine ecosystem to address Finance Minister Bethlenfalvy's key priorities:

  • Protecting people's health
  • Protecting our economy

Ontario's innovative stem cell scientists are already saving lives, including state-of-the-art treatments for COVID recovery, as Sharon Charlebois can attest.  After being admitted into ICU with COVID-19 at The Ottawa Hospital, Sharon attributes her survival to the stem cell treatment she received.  Read Sharon's fully story here.

Stem cell science originated in Toronto 50 years ago with the ground-breaking discovery by Doctors James Till and Ernest McCulloch; a remarkable contribution to our provincial, and national, legacy.

At a time when the unprecedented commercial value of stem cell technologies are just beginning to be realized, Ontario's stem cell innovators are now at a crossroads.  Without ongoing funding, Ontario stands to lose it competitive advantage and the opportunity to benefit from the burgeoning Regenerative Medicine commercial sector.

Catalyzed by an initial $25M investment from the provincial government in 2015, OIRM has since generated $174.5M (6.9-fold ROI) in leveraged funding and invested in cutting-edge technologies that generated an additional $332M (13-fold ROI) in Series A investment.  OIRM support was a key factor in the path leading to the creation of BlueRock Therapeutics, one of the greatest Canadian biotech success stories, which was acquired by Bayer in 2019 for $1B (40-fold ROI) and is now a leading engineered cell therapy company.

"BlueRock invested in the Ontario ecosystem because of work that OIRM had supported from Dr. Michael Laflamme (UHN). It was really the strength of the science under OIRM's guidance, in my view, that led to our decision to launch and build BlueRock Therapeutics in the Toronto-area. OIRM's support was critical to getting a small biotech launched. I would like to see that funding envelope increased to give the Institute the ability to bring these programs to a later phase of value creation—something that would have the added benefit of creating more confidence in potential investors."- Dr. Bob Deans, Chief Technical Officer, BlueRock Therapeutics 2017-2020

It is reasonable to expect more opportunities like BlueRock to develop if Ontario continues to nurture stem cell research and innovation.  Ontario is staring at a $1B economic opportunity by funding Regenerative Medicine advancements.  But in 2020, while the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine was refunded at $5.5B USD, here at home the funding for OIRM was removed as part of a cost-cutting exercise, and unfortunately before a glowing report from a blue-ribbon international review panel that recommended renewed funding for OIRM.

OIRM is imploring government to reconsider its position and continue funding stem cell advancements in Ontario.  An investment of $25M over 5 years will yield massive returns for Ontario.

At no point in history have public health and economic recovery been simultaneously prioritized by the provincial government as urgently as right now.  Medical treatments are evolving rapidly, and if made-in-Ontario stem cell research remains a priority for The Government of Ontario, there is good reason to feel hopeful about the future.

OIRM is a passionate champion for healthcare providers and their patients as we build a healthier future for Ontario, Canada, and the world.

New Book Offers Refreshing Alternative to Organized Religion

What if Jesus Were a Coach provides a new perspective on spirituality to inspire everyone to connect with a higher power.

Stafford, TX, Jan. 19, 2022 — Texas Life Coach Michael Taylor has thrown a lifeline to individuals looking to kickstart their spiritual journeys and self-discovery in his new book, What if Jesus Were a Coach?

“There are many people who are hesitant to pursue their spiritual journeys because of strict religious doctrines surrounding Christianity that don’t coincide with their personal views,” Taylor said.

Data released from the Pew Research Center supports Taylor’s position, with surveys showing that the number of religious “nones” has grown by nearly 30 million over the past decade.

Touted as a refreshing take on spirituality and religion, What if Jesus Were a Coach? aims to inspire readers to find their own truth about God. The author shares his personal experiences and delves into the teachings of Jesus to help readers realize that there is more to spirituality than rules and restrictions.

A former Atheist, Taylor once had an aversion to organized religion until he undertook extensive research about world religions to determine if God existed or not.

“My research ultimately led me to my own ‘truth’ about God, which has allowed me to create an intimacy and connection to a power greater than myself,” he said. “In this book, I share my experiences and how I was able to do that.”

What if Jesus Were a Coach offers valuable lessons that will benefit even those who do not believe in God. Readers will come away with a refreshing viewpoint and newfound wisdom on connecting with a higher power and achieving their dreams.

And the book is already having an impact. One reader had this to say: “The message is beautiful and heartfelt — with explicit personal experiences. For me, it is like coming out of the deepest, darkest hole and into the light for the first time. It is not just a guide, but also a light to guide you along the way to your spiritual awakening. It is an ultimate guide when you’re searching for the truth in your spiritual journey.”

Coach Michael Taylor is an entrepreneur, author (10 books), motivational speaker, podcaster, and radio and TV show host who has dedicated his life to empowering men and women to reach their full potential by transforming their lives from the inside out. He knows first-hand how to overcome adversity and build a rewarding and fulfilling life, and he is sharing his knowledge and wisdom with others to support them in creating the life of their dreams.

Reignite Your Spiritual Conviction in 2022

Toronto, ON/New York, NY, January 19, 2022 — Spiritual drifting was a concern for many churches way before the pandemic kept parishioners at home. Here to help Christians re-evaluate and reaffirm their spiritual journeys is senior pastor Alan Davey.

“We forget him so quickly,” Davey says, referring to Jesus. “The commonplace platitude ‘out of sight out of mind’ applies not just to people we see and know, but also to our Father in heaven.”

Our noisy world constantly pulls our attention in new directions and prompts us to pursue other interests and desires, he notes.

“Subsequently, we become tired Christians who suffer from a lack of conviction, authenticity and prophetic insight,” he says.

In his new book, Walking the Line: Embracing the Imperatives of Jesus, Davey shares insightful commentary, perspectives from a rich variety of Christian sources and authors, and lessons from Jesus himself to create an accessible guide to viewing the Bible and Christ’s teachings in a fresh light. Included are original drawings from the late artist Joy Kim and study questions at the end of each chapter to help reinforce the messages.

Davey masterfully underscores the value and importance of understanding and following the rules of Jesus — not just for individuals but for entire communities of faith.

“The rule of Jesus articulated in Matthew’s Gospel is neither obscure nor archaic,” Davey says. “Jesus’ imperatives speak powerfully to the contemporary issues of our day, and do so by illuminating a way of clarity, simplicity and love.”

Author Alan Davey is the senior pastor of Weston Park Baptist Church, an inner-city church in Toronto, and Adjunct Professor of Christian Spirituality and Worship at Tyndale University and Seminary. He is co-author of Climbing the Spiritual Mountain (Wipf & Stock, 2014), Abba’s Whisper (Wipf & Stock, 2017) and The Passionate Bride (Wipf & Stock, 2019).

Davey is also an avid scuba diver, hiker, singer, guitarist and art lover. While writing Walking the Line, Davey was asked to officiate at the funeral for his wife’s niece, the late artist, teacher and musician, Joy Kim. While leafing through a collection from her final exhibition, “Have You Walked in My Shoes?”, Davey was inspired to include some of her oil pastel drawings of shoes, boots, and slippers in his book to represent the disciples who embrace Jesus’ imperatives in the everyday of their lives.

New survey finds Ontarians feel health-care recovery is the first step to economic recovery

TORONTO, Jan. 19, 2022 /CNW/ - Ontarians want the government to prioritize clearing the backlog of health-care services built up during the pandemic, even if it means a short-term impact on economic recovery, according to a new survey conducted for the Ontario Medical Association.

When asked to identify the issue that was most important to them, 40 per cent of Ontarians surveyed by Ipsos chose addressing COVID-19, followed by 10 per cent  who said access to health care/long wait times/understaffed hospitals. Seven per cent said economic growth should be the government priority.

Younger Ontarians (ages 18-39) expressed more interest in mental health issues, suggesting a significant and growing generational divide. Housing affordability and climate change have risen greatly as priorities for Ontarians over the past eight months.

An overwhelming 96 per cent of respondents said they supported the five pillars of the OMA's Prescription for Ontario, a five-point plan for improving our health-care system. Reducing the backlog of 20 million health-care services is the top priority of that plan, which the OMA hopes all political parties will adopt.

The survey of 1,000 Ontarians was conducted in December before the Omicron variant swept through the province and the government paused non-emergency surgeries and procedures.

"Ontarians are sending a clear message that we have to have a strong health-care system if we want to have a healthy economy, and Ontario doctors agree" said OMA President Dr. Adam Kassam. "This will require collaboration among the public, health-care providers and all levels of government, including a significant investment from the federal government through the Canada Health Transfer to the provinces to cover 35 per cent of all health-care costs, up from the current 22 per cent."

When asked to choose which was a higher priority to them, Ontarians most often chose the backlog in surgeries – 51 per cent of the time, followed by improving and expanding long-term care facilities for seniors, which was chosen 47 per cent of the time. Both of these were chosen more often than stimulating economic growth, which was chosen 39 per cent of the time.

The survey also found that one in 10 Ontarians have not been vaccinated against COVID or have received only one dose. Seven per cent said they did not plan to get vaccinated. They are more likely to be millennials (people born between 1981 and 1996) or Gen X women (born between 1965 and 1980).

Twenty-four per cent of survey respondents who are not vaccinated or do not plan to be vaccinated – almost one in four – said they were afraid of side effects, with the same proportion saying they did not trust information coming from government. Others said they had made a personal choice to wait, don't believe the vaccine is effective, dislike needles, have medical reasons, or were not sufficiently concerned about getting COVID-19 to get their shots.

"This survey shows that Ontarians are deeply concerned about the pandemic backlog and other cracks in our health-care system," said OMA CEO Allan O'Dette. "It shows they are aligned with a plan by Ontario's doctors, Prescription for Ontario: Doctors' 5-Point Plan for Better Health Care, that can be adopted by government to address these issues and build a strong health-care system for the future. This plan was the result of the broadest consultation in the OMA's history, including outreach to the public, stakeholders and our members."

The Ipsos survey was conducted online between Dec. 7-13, 2021. The representative sample of 1,000 Ontario residents aged 18 and older is considered accurate to within 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The OMA has additional resources about the backlog of health-care serviceshealth-care funding and the Canada Health Transfer.

About the OMA

The Ontario Medical Association represents Ontario's 43,000-plus physicians, medical students and retired physicians, advocating for and supporting doctors while strengthening the leadership role of doctors in caring for patients. Our vision is to be the trusted voice in transforming Ontario's health-care system.

Gold Medalist & Two-Time Canadian National Champion Gabrielle Daleman Joins Team MuscleTech®

Figure Skater and 2020 Miss Ontario turns her attention towards the Four Continents Championship this week

Oakville, ON, Jan. 19, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MuscleTech® (www.muscletech.com), the internationally recognized sports nutrition brand known for ingredients and products that bring active nutrition and human potential together, has announced a partnership with Olympic® gold medalist and two-time Canadian national champion figure skater Gabrielle Daleman.

The one-year agreement will see the Sochi and PyeongChang veteran champion the MuscleTech® brand’s award winning proteins, pre-workouts and amino-based products including Amino Build®, Shatter®  Elite and Iso Whey Clear on social media platforms, in media interviews, through on-ice training, on advertising and at retail throughout Canada.

“I’m so excited to announce that I am officially part of the MuscleTech® family,” Daleman said. “I absolutely love this line. As a competitor, I know how important nutrition and health is and how important it is to recover and take care of your body. I absolutely love this line because they  have products for before, during, and after my workout, it’s everything I could ask for and more”.

In addition to her success on the world stage, which also includes a bronze medal won during the 2017 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2017 Four Continents Championship, Daleman’s relentless work ethic has thrived on the pageant circuit, winning Miss Ontario in 2020.

Daleman's partnership with MuscleTech® will focus on her elite training regimen and an evolving career in a sport that favors those younger than the now 23-year-old. While most female athletes hit their athletic peak in their mid-to-late 20’s, many female skaters routinely find success throughout their teenage years, as the physical strain of jumping, spinning and training on bodies cause many to give up the sport before hitting their physical peak. Daleman came to MuscleTech® organically, as the MuscleTech® brand’s Amino Build (intra-workout BCAAs), Shatter Elite (preworkout), and Iso Whey Clear (protein) products propel Daleman through long days and early mornings for the last 18 months.

“Gabrielle represents everything the MuscleTech® brand stands for. Strength, resilience, perseverance, inspiration, and a commitment to health and fitness that is reflected in not only her physique but in her mental fortitude,”  said Ioavate’s Chief Marketing Officer Jarrod Jordan. “Daleman has also been open and honest about her struggles with mental health, anxiety, and ADHD in a sport known for its brutally competitive nature. In spite of these complications, she remains committed to improvement, in every aspect of the word.”

For more than twenty-five years, MuscleTech has fueled those who want to raise the bar, helping to optimize human performance. Whether you’re an elite athlete training to improve your strength, endurance, and power for the upcoming season, or simply someone who is trying to stay healthy, the brand’s innovative line of performance supplements meets the needs of everyone.
