Alberta kids, Ariya Jutanugarn big winners at Canadian Pacific Women's Open

Ariya Jutanugarn topped one of the deepest fields on the LPGA tour, including dozens of recent Olympians, to win the Canadian Pacific Women's Open title, with local kids also winning big thanks to CP's $2 million donation to the Alberta Children's Hospital in support of pediatric cardiac care and research.

"It was a tremendous week from start to finish and we couldn't be prouder of Ariya and our partnership with the Alberta Children's Hospital," said E. Hunter Harrison, CP's CEO. "Having the tournament at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club, in our home city and province, is bitter sweet as it is my last Open as CEO. I will be forever proud of the contributions we have made as a result of our involvement with Golf Canada and the CP Women's Open – all part of our commitment, through CP Has Heart, to give where we live and operate."

CP's donation, one of the largest on the LPGA tour, will support the hospital in researching the development of "liquid biopsy," a non-invasive procedure that doctors hope will replace invasive tissue biopsies currently used to determine if a child's transplanted heart is being attacked by his or her immune system. This new approach, in combination with the advanced DNA sequencing technologies at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, can also be used to make a genetic diagnosis for congenital heart disease before a baby is born.

"As a member of the cardiology team at the Alberta Children's Hospital, I am thrilled with the support they have received from the tournament," said Dr. Steven Greenway, Pediatric Cardiologist, Alberta Children's Hospital. "For more than 25 years, the cardiology team at the Alberta Children's Hospital has been providing leading-edge care for kids in our community. This incredible gift will be used to take our research even further from the lab to the clinic as we develop new, non-invasive tests and personalized treatments for children with heart conditions."

The final donation total was a result of a number of fundraising initiatives leading up to the conclusion of the golf tournament, including Spruce Meadows Clear Rounds for Heart, Alberta Children's Hospital Radio-thon and online donation matching.

"The CP Has Heart campaign has brought our community together in a wonderful way. For children who rely on cardiac care and research at the Alberta Children's Hospital, the 2016 CP Women's Open has left a life-changing legacy in our city for years to come," said Saifa Koonar, President and CEO, Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation. We are extremely grateful to CP, Golf Canada and Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club for making this memorable event possible!"

In Canada, one in 100 babies is born with a congenital heart disease. Every year in Alberta, that translates to 500 infants – and their families – who find themselves embarking upon a life-altering journey as a result. That includes CP Women's Open's Ambassador, Alexa Castillo, and her family. The family was referred to the Alberta Children's Hospital where doctors told them their daughter would be born with critical aortic stenosis, a life-threatening heart defect where the aorta in her left ventricle does not work properly. At only eight years old, Alexa has had multiple open heart surgeries and will need a lifetime of care from cardiac specialists.

"It has been so humbling to see the community rally around kids like our daughter who need help for their very special hearts," said Jorge Castillo, Alexa's father. "The care at the Alberta Children's Hospital is amazing and this wonderful gift is going to make it even better for children and their families who will need it in the future."

To coincide with Canada 150 celebrations, next year's Canadian Pacific Women's Open will return to the nation's capital and the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club from August 21 to 27, 2017. CP will announce its charity partner at a later date.

"This week was a fantastic showcase of golf and charitable giving – we congratulate CP, the CP Has Heart program, and everyone involved in the tournament," said Scott Simmons, CEO of Golf Canada. "We look forward to 2017 in Ottawa when we celebrate Canada's 150th with an iconic Canadian company and the best golfers in the world."

Lole - All White Tour Toronto

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Lole all white tour. I have to say this was a very well run event. I am not a yogi but I definitely enjoyed all of the flow. The two instructors who lead it were amazing. Thank you for inviting me Lole. Not only did I get an invite but Lole dressed me for the event in their line. The event was all white and Ive never actually wore a pair of all white pants. I was a bit hesitant but the pants fit great, felt great and best of all were not see through! Lucky for the 2000 people behind me in attendance wouldn't you say?

I arrived  bit early to check out the show case of Lole's new line, network and take in the entire experience. The Feel Good Guru provided healthy snacks and pressed juices. All were very yummy. Ive tried her juice cleanse before and absolutely loved it (for those of you interested in a juice cleanse).

Oikos also provided greek yogurt and were a sponsor of the event. In our gift bag full of wonderful goodies they had a knife, spoon and fork set and a picnic napkin for us. After our practice they gave us all a vegan lunch to eat on our mat while local talented musicians played for us. Fiji provided the water. It was relaxing and peaceful.

Lole not only gave us a gift bag full of amazing products, gift cards and picnic accessories but they also let us take home the mat that we used! What an awesome take home!

Thanks again for inviting me Lole. It was an experience that I won't ever forget.

Check out my photos below of the experience! Don't you wish that you were there!

J-lo recently celebrated her 46th birthday looking fit and fierce. She didn't leave much to the imagination but still kept it J-lo classy. What are your thoughts? Too little for 46? Or does she look fit and fierce. I personally love this look. Black and partially see through make up a lot of my favourite dresses in my own closet and I will still love them at 46 I am sure of it! Way to go J-lo!

My Nike Women's 15km Toronto Experience - @nikewomen

Nike Women's 15km Toronto

I received an email early last week from Athletics Canada asking if I wanted an entry to the Nike Womens 15km. Obviously I said yes as this is an amazing event and I also knew that entries were limited. Did you know you actually get entered into a draw to run it. Not only did I get a VIP bracelet for the ferry over to the island but the bracelet gave me access to all sorts of things like access to the VIP tent, Nike escort to the start line, cocktails and lunch afterwards. They really rolled out the red carpet for us. This was especially great to be in the tent since the morning started of pretty cold and rainy.

race_0.5838239700860376

I have never claimed to be a long distance runner. I am from a sprinting background. That means short distances and lots of rest in ideal training conditions. Im definitely not experienced running in long steady state races like a 15km. With that being said I ran a Red Bull Wings For Life event that I also ended up running 15km. The weather was much nicer. At the start line it literally started pouring. They had us in the gate by 9:15am the latest. Since I am obsessed with being punctual I as there by 9:05am. However the race didn't start until 9:30am. Ideally for me I would have preferred to stay warm much closer to the start. They had lots of brand ambassadors, master trainers and Olympians on hand that were introduced and spoke before the race. That was very motivating and inspiring. The rain actually stopped after the first few km's in. Thank goodness!

race_0.6886136700260076

My goal was to run close to the time I ran for my previous 15km. 1 hour and 30 minutes. I finished in 1:32 minutes. Despite a bad knee and something major going on with my gluteus I was a happy camper. I played Spotify the whole way which kept me very motivated. I even saw my good friend Dj Nora Tones at the 8km mark and hopped in her booth to say hi for a few seconds. My fav part of the race was running down the Toronto Island runway where the planes take off. There were also lots of cool views of Toronto on the boardwalk for the last couple of kms. I really wanted to stop for a picture but I also promised myself I would run the whole way. I will have to go back on another day to enjoy the scenery (it was my first time on the island.

One of the most motivating things about the Nike Women's 15km Toronto experience was that another thing that kept me motivated to finish was that there was a TIFFANY's NECKLACE waiting at the finish line for each and every finisher. Now if that isn't motivating for someone who dislikes long distance running (take a look at the shirt I wore) I don't know what is!!!

Another mistake I made was that I wore my number on my back (its what we do as sprinters). This was a bad idea because all of the race photography was sorted by number. So I had to email www.gamefacemedia.com who were so kind and helpful. They helped me that same day find my pictures from the event! So a huge thank you to the kind gentleman who took the time to help me.

Overall I give the event an 8/10. I wish I could have gotten to the start gate a little later than the required us there so I could have stayed warmer in the rain. Other than that I highly recommend this race. It was fun, inspiring and an over all great experience. I am better for it. #betterforit

The Benefits Of Exercising While Pregnant

Exercise has benefits for everyone. Age is not a factor, nor is ethnicity, height, or experience. Working out can also benefit expecting mothers. Most women benefit greatly from exercising throughout their pregnancy. According to an article by Zawadski the benefits of exercising when pregnant include:

  • Helping to relieve backaches
  • Improving posture by strengthening and toning muscles in the back, butt, and thighs
  • May help prevent or treat gestational diabetes
  • Increasing energy levels
  • Noticeable mood changes towards more positive
  • Reduction in constipation by accelerating movement in the intestine
  • Increasing the muscle tone, strength, and endurance
  • Improving in sleep and quality of sleep
  • Improving the ability to cope with the pain of labor
  • Helping women regain pre-pregnancy fitness and shape more quicklyAny pregnant woman wanting to exercise should always talk with their healthcare provider first.  The personal trainer or instructor should make sure that it is known to the pregnant client’s medical doctor that she will be starting an exercise routine. This is to make sure that there are no complications with the pregnancy where the mother to be could endanger the baby. Usually there is no problems but occasionally there are extreme cases where the mother to be should be on bed rest. So it is important to check with your doctor first.
    Happy Exercising!
